Overview

Jira is a work-management platform for teams coordinating projects, tasks and delivery across different functions. It is best suited to teams that need configurable workflows and several ways to track progress, though smaller groups should consider whether its plan quotas and broader feature set justify the added scope.

Teams can prioritize work, break it into assigned tasks and follow progress in backlogs, boards, lists, timelines, calendars and summaries. Forms, dependencies, goals and reports support coordination beyond task assignment. Jira Cloud is Atlassian-managed SaaS; Data Center is self-managed for organizations with strict regulatory or security requirements, but its end is scheduled for March 28, 2029, with new license sales ending March 30, 2026.

Key features

Planning and progress views

Jira offers several ways to organize and inspect work, from backlogs for prioritization to timelines and calendars for schedule visibility. Customizable templates, workflows, forms, dependency management, goals and built-in reports make it adaptable to varied project processes. That breadth suits teams coordinating work across functions; groups that only need a lightweight task list may find the configuration and feature range unnecessary.

Automation, AI and integrations

Automation rules can handle routine updates, while Rovo AI can create custom automations, keep status current, identify risks and surface trends from work items. Rovo Search, Chat and Agents are included with Standard, Premium and Enterprise, not Free. The Free plan's 150 automation steps per subscription per month is a modest allowance; Standard raises that to 400 per user per month, Premium to 750 and Enterprise to 1,000.

More than 3,000 Marketplace apps and integrations include GitHub, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Figma and Miro. Jira's Teamwork Graph connects Jira with Confluence, Bitbucket and connected third-party tools. This ecosystem can suit organizations already using Atlassian products or needing many connections, though the value of that breadth depends on the team's actual tools.

Administration and security

Customizable fields, workflows, permissions and project- or global-level configuration offer room to tailor Jira, with APIs for connecting other systems. Standard adds user roles and permissions for controlling who can create, view and comment, and permits anonymous access to Jira spaces for people outside an organization. Security capabilities include TLS 1.2+ in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest; Premium adds IP allowlisting, while SAML SSO and SCIM are available through Atlassian Guard. Enterprise includes advanced encryption, Shadow IT controls, identity providers, SCIM and enforced SSO. These controls make the higher tiers more relevant to organizations with demanding administration needs.

Pricing

Jira uses a freemium model. Prices below are monthly unless otherwise stated; Standard and Premium include a 7-day free trial that requires no payment information and can be canceled at any time.

Free — 0.00 USD per free: Free forever for up to 10 users, with 2 GB of storage and 150 automation steps per subscription per month. Community Support is included. It is a practical starting point for small teams, but the user, storage and automation limits are restrictive as work scales, and Rovo is excluded.
Standard — 7.91 USD per month, billed monthly: Includes a 7-day trial, 250 GB of storage, 400 automation steps per user per month and up to 100,000 users per site. It adds user roles and permissions, anonymous external access to Jira spaces, and Rovo Search, Chat and Agents. This is the more balanced paid tier for teams needing administration and collaboration tools without Premium's unlimited storage and higher automation allowance.
Premium — 14.54 USD per month, billed monthly: Includes a 7-day trial, unlimited storage, 750 automation steps per user per month, Rovo features and a 99.9% uptime SLA. It also includes 24/7 Premium Support. It is a better fit when storage, automation capacity, uptime commitments or support are central requirements; smaller teams may not need the upgrade.
Enterprise — custom pricing, billed annually: Available only on annual subscriptions and requires contacting sales. It supports up to 150 sites and 1,000 automation steps per user per month, with a 99.95% uptime SLA, 24/7 support and advanced security controls. The multi-site and security provisions make it the tier for larger, more tightly governed organizations.
Data Center — custom pricing, annual subscription: Self-managed deployment includes active/active clustering, SAML 2.0 and OpenID Connect, disaster recovery, and project and issue archiving. It targets organizations requiring self-management, but its scheduled end makes it a poor fit for new long-term deployments.

Monthly plans accept credit cards or PayPal; annual plans also accept bank transfer or check. Monthly plans qualify for a refund within the first paid month, while annual plans qualify within 30 days of payment. Jira Software Data Center has a separate fully functional 30-day free trial for self-managed deployment.

Platforms

Jira is available on Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, web, API and self-hosted deployment. Its mobile app supports updates, comments, boards, backlogs, approvals, forms and project status. Cloud is Atlassian-managed SaaS; Data Center is self-managed. New Server licenses are no longer sold, and Server support ended February 15, 2024.

Who it's for

Jira is positioned for software, product, marketing, operations and other teams, with plans intended to serve organizations from 1 to 35,000 users. It makes the most sense when teams need structured planning, configurable workflows, multiple progress views or extensive integrations. A team with modest coordination needs should compare the Free caps and paid-tier costs against simpler tools before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Backlog, board, list, timeline, calendar and summary views give teams different ways to plan and monitor work.
Pro: More than 3,000 Marketplace apps and integrations, plus APIs and the Teamwork Graph, support connections across a broad toolset.
Pro: Higher tiers add meaningful scale and governance provisions, including more automation, higher storage limits, uptime SLAs and advanced security controls.
Con: Free is capped at 10 users, 2 GB of storage and 150 automation steps per subscription per month, and does not include Rovo.
Con: Standard and Premium prices are billed monthly, while Enterprise and Data Center require custom pricing; the cost of larger deployments may need sales engagement.
Con: Data Center's license sales end March 30, 2026, and the product ends March 28, 2029, limiting its appeal for organizations planning a lasting self-managed deployment.

ClickUp is worth considering for teams that want unlimited tasks and members on its Free Forever plan, which includes 60 MB of storage and one form. Asana suits one or two people managing personal projects on its free Personal plan, with a two-user cap and 100 MB maximum per file.

Zoho Projects is a compact free option for teams of up to five users and three projects, with 5 GB of storage. YouTrack offers a free cloud plan for up to 10 users and 30 GB of storage, making it a point of comparison for teams prioritizing a larger free storage allowance.

monday.com is a fit for very small teams willing to work within a free plan capped at two seats, three boards, 200 items and 500 MB of storage. Trello offers a free plan with up to 10 collaborators and 10 boards per Workspace, while Linear provides an unlimited-member free plan limited to two teams and 250 issues. Wrike is another free alternative, with unlimited users, 2 GB of storage per account and 200 active tasks.

Verdict

Choose Jira if your team needs flexible work planning, multiple progress views and broad integration options, with a path from a 10-user free plan to enterprise controls. Look elsewhere if your needs are limited to lightweight task tracking, or if you require a long-term self-managed product: Data Center is scheduled to end in 2029.
