Overview

RomM is a self-hosted manager for people who play games on emulators and want a library that can do more than catalog files. Its strongest case is for users who value browsing and playing from one place, with saves and states that follow them across devices; it is a less direct choice for anyone seeking a hosted service that requires no self-hosted setup.

There is no paid tier or tracking, and the AGPL-3.0 license gives technically minded users control of the software and their collection. That tradeoff matters: RomM is free, but its self-hosted model is part of the product, not an optional extra.

Key features

Collection management

RomM scans a collection and can enrich entries with information from IGDB, ScreenScraper, LaunchBox, and MobyGames. It can also fetch custom artwork from SteamGridDB, track RetroAchievements, and let users edit metadata. These tools can make a varied ROM library easier to browse, though users who only need a simple file organizer may not need this much collection infrastructure.

The project says RomM supports more than 400 platforms, including multi-disk games, DLC, mods, hacks, and manuals. A built-in patcher applies ROM hacks and translations on the fly. That breadth suits collections spanning multiple systems and formats better than a narrow, single-purpose catalog.

Playing and syncing

Browser play uses EmulatorJS and Ruffle and needs no setup. Saves and states sync across devices, with conflict resolution when versions differ. Offline mode and controller support add flexibility for playing, while cross-device syncing is especially useful for people who switch between devices. These features do not change the fact that the library itself is self-hosted.

Access and integrations

Granular per-user permissions and OIDC single sign-on give RomM options for controlling access. Integrations include ES-DE and Pegasus exports, LaunchBox import, community apps, and a REST API. Official clients include a Windows Playnite plugin, the Android handheld launcher Argosy, and the Linux handheld client Grout. The native iOS app is a community project; the project team says it does not regularly review community-project source code, so iOS users should weigh that caveat before relying on it.

Pricing

RomM: 0.00 USD per free. The plan is free forever, AGPL-3.0 licensed, and has no paid features. There is no free trial because there is no paid plan to trial. RomM's stated model means no paid tier gates its features, but users take on the self-hosted approach rather than paying for a ready-made hosted service.

Platforms

RomM supports Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, web, API, and self-hosted use. The mix of browser access and platform clients gives users several ways into a library, though the iOS option is community-maintained rather than an official client.

Who it's for

RomM is best suited to emulator players with collections large or varied enough to benefit from metadata, artwork, achievements, patching, and broad platform coverage. It is also a strong fit for users who want browser play, cross-device save syncing, and control over their own data without a paid tier. Someone who wants a hosted, turnkey library service or only needs basic ROM sorting should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad support for more than 400 platforms, multi-disk games, DLC, mods, hacks, and manuals makes it useful for diverse collections.
Pros: Browser play, cross-device save and state syncing with conflict resolution, offline mode, and controller support connect library management to actual play.
Pros: Free forever, AGPL-3.0 licensed, and without paid features or tracking, while keeping collection data under user control.
Cons: Self-hosting makes it a poorer fit for users who want a managed hosted service.
Cons: The community iOS app's source is not regularly reviewed by the project team, making it a less assured route for iPhone users.

Verdict

Its breadth and user-controlled data are the main reasons to choose it; readers who want managed hosting, or who need a more confidently reviewed iOS client, should look elsewhere.
