Overview

Rclone is a free, open-source utility for working with files across cloud storage from a command line, scripts, or an API. It is best for technically capable users who need to automate transfers, synchronise folders, or mount remote storage. Its breadth makes it a strong toolkit for those jobs, but its command-led interface is a poor fit for anyone seeking a finished desktop file manager.

Key features

Support for more than 70 cloud storage products—including Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and Backblaze B2—lets rclone move data across services through one tool. It can copy changed files, sync in one direction, or use bisync for two-way synchronisation. For backups and migrations, MD5 and SHA1 checks, timestamp preservation, and restartable operations help protect continuity. When providers permit server-side transfers, files can move between them without consuming local disk space or routing the transfer through the local machine.

Rclone can mount local, cloud, and virtual filesystems as disks, and serve files through SFTP, HTTP, WebDAV, FTP, and DLNA. Virtual backends can encrypt, compress, chunk, hash, or combine storage remotes. Shell pipelines, scripts, an API, and dry-run support make it useful in automated workflows. The cost of that flexibility is a tool primarily operated through commands; its web GUI is experimental, not a polished substitute for a conventional file manager.

The crypt remote encrypts file contents locally before upload and decrypts them after download, with filenames and directory names encrypted by default. It uses NaCl SecretBox based on XSalsa20 and Poly1305. This is useful when stored content should remain encrypted on the remote, but crypt does not conceal file length or modification time. Its password is only lightly obscured in the configuration file, so users who cannot keep that file secure should enable configuration encryption.

Pricing

Rclone is free: its open-source plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no free-trial period to weigh against a paid tier. It is maintained by volunteers and Nick Craig-Wood, rather than sold in a tiered subscription. The project lists business sponsorship as a route to support contracts, advertising deals, and consultancy; those arrangements are not a standard consumer plan.

Platforms

Downloads cover Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Plan 9, and Solaris, with Android builds also available. Android is not yet a first-class build, and the project does not offer mobile apps. For release v1.75.1, minimum requirements are Linux kernel 3.2, macOS 12 Monterey, and Windows 10 or Server 2016. Rclone supports scheduled synchronisation and drive mounting; its API and web access broaden how it can fit into an existing setup, though the web GUI remains experimental.

Who it's for

Rclone is a good choice for people comfortable with command-line tools who need repeatable file operations across cloud providers, or want to script backups, migrations, mounts, or serving. Its server-side transfer support is particularly useful when moving data between compatible services without tying up local bandwidth or storage. Users who depend on a straightforward graphical interface, or need an Android mobile app, should choose another tool.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 70 storage integrations bring many providers into one transfer and sync workflow.
Pros: Hash checks, preserved timestamps, restartable operations, and server-side transfers support dependable, bandwidth-conscious jobs.
Pros: Mounting, file serving, scripting, and an API make it useful beyond straightforward copying.
Pros: The free open-source project includes one-way sync and two-way bisync without a subscription.
Cons: The command-line focus and experimental web GUI leave users without a polished graphical file manager.
Cons: Crypt leaves file length and modification time visible, while its password needs configuration encryption if the config file is not secure.
Cons: Android builds are not first-class, and there is no mobile app.

Alternatives

For a free alternative with a more visually oriented transfer workflow, consider Air Explorer: its Free BASIC plan limits users to one account per cloud, read-only cloud-to-cloud transfers, and two simultaneous downloads and uploads. CloudDrive2 is another free option, with its Basic plan capped at two cloud drives, one local mount, and two devices online at once; it suits users whose needs fit those limits. For Android-focused folder synchronisation, FolderSync has a free tier, while Owlfiles offers a free Basic plan limited to three connections and a Pro plan at 1.99 USD per month for unlimited connections.

filex is a free option for users looking for a web, self-hosted, or desktop file tool. For an iOS or Android WebDAV client, WebDAV Navigator is an alternative; Cyberduck is a macOS and Windows alternative. GoodSync is another option for users comparing sync software. Readers comparing WebDAV clients can browse WebDAV Client Software, while those comparing transfer tools can see File transfer services.

Verdict

Choose rclone if you want a free, broad, scriptable command-line toolkit for managing cloud files, especially for repeatable transfers, sync, and mounts across providers. Its combination of integrations and automation is the main reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a polished graphical app, a first-class Android experience, or encryption that hides file metadata as well as content.
