Overview

VerbTeX brings LaTeX editing and compilation to phones and tablets, with desktop and web access for cloud projects. It is best suited to people who need to work across devices or away from a desktop; the tight free-plan caps make it less compelling for a large or growing project library.

Its strongest distinction is the choice between account-free, offline local work and synchronized cloud projects. Pro is the step up for users who need code completion or more room for projects and documents.

Key features

VerbTeX generates PDFs with PdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX and supports both BibTeX and Biber. That combination gives LaTeX users flexibility in compiling documents and managing bibliographies. Local Mode stores .tex files on the device, supports offline editing and compilation, and does not require an account. Cloud Mode synchronizes projects with Verbosus and adds a web interface, making it the better fit for people moving between devices.

Integrations include Dropbox, Box, Git, iCloud, Zotero and Mendeley, connecting document work with storage, version control and reference management. An AI assistant uses ChatGPT and Claude. Command code completion, however, is reserved for Pro, so users who need that editor aid must pay.

The app has no ads. Cloud Mode supports two-factor authentication in combination with Copiosus, while Pro provides TLS-encrypted transmission of content. Apple's listing says the developer reports that the app collects no data.

Pricing

VerbTeX Free costs 0.00 USD per free. It allows 2 local projects, 2 documents per local project and 2 file uploads per local project, alongside 2 cloud projects with 2 documents per cloud project. Those limits can accommodate a small set of active work, but they are restrictive for users managing multiple papers or substantial collections of documents.

Upgrade: Subscription costs 3.99 USD per month and adds code completion and unlimited projects and documents. It suits regular users who need those capabilities but prefer a recurring payment; the stated benefits do not include unlimited file uploads.

Upgrade: Forever costs 8.99 USD per once and includes code completion and unlimited projects and documents. It offers the same stated additions without a monthly charge, so it is the clearer fit for someone who expects to keep using Pro. Both paid plans remove the project and document caps, but the free plan remains the choice for occasional, small-scale work.

Platforms

VerbTeX supports Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac and a web interface. Local Mode and offline compilation make it usable without relying on cloud synchronization, while the web interface is tied to Cloud Mode.

Who it's for

VerbTeX fits LaTeX users who want mobile editing, offline compilation, multiple engine and bibliography options, and a choice of local or synchronized work. The free tier is reasonable for a few modest projects. Users with many documents, a need for code completion, or a workflow centered on unrestricted uploads should weigh its limits before committing.

Pros and cons

Pros: Offline editing and compilation without an account in Local Mode suit work away from a reliable connection.
Pros: Three PDF engines, two bibliography systems and integrations with storage, version-control and reference tools cover varied LaTeX workflows.
Pros: A free tier and a one-time Pro option let users avoid a required monthly subscription.
Cons: Free users are limited to 2 local and 2 cloud projects, with tight document and upload caps that can constrain ongoing work.
Cons: Code completion requires Pro, and the stated unlimited allowance covers projects and documents, not file uploads.

Verdict

Choose VerbTeX if mobile LaTeX work, offline local editing and the option to synchronize with a web interface matter more than generous free-tier limits. Its engine and bibliography support make it a capable fit for varied document workflows, while Pro offers code completion and removes project and document caps. Look elsewhere if you need an expansive free workspace or unlimited uploads.
