Overview

Point85 calculates overall equipment effectiveness from availability, performance rate and quality rate, using a nine-category time-loss model. It also supports general-purpose equipment data acquisition. The system separates configuration, collection, monitoring and event entry into different applications, which gives plant teams distinct functions to work with but calls for someone to configure and maintain the setup.

Designer defines equipment, data sources, event-resolution scripts, work schedules, availability reasons, materials and units of measure. Collector runs as a Windows service or Unix daemon, storing equipment events in a relational database for OEE, mean time between failures and mean time to repair calculations. Monitor brings together equipment metrics, collector status and notifications, event timelines, trends, time-loss charts and Pareto charts.

The OEE applications are open-source projects hosted on GitHub; the OEE-Designer repository identifies its license as MIT. The maker also maintains related open-source projects for operator and mobile applications, units of measure and work schedules.

Key features

OEE and loss analysis: Availability, performance and quality tracking are paired with downtime tracking and loss analysis. An optional work schedule can inform calculations, making the model relevant to plants that want losses viewed against planned operating time.
Broad data collection: Inputs include OPC DA and UA, HTTP/S, RabbitMQ, JMS, MQTT, Kafka, WebSocket, email, database interface tables, file shares, Modbus, cron jobs and GE Proficy Historian. This range can accommodate varied data paths, though it also makes configuration a central part of deployment.
Monitoring and messaging: Monitor displays trends, event timelines, time-loss and Pareto charts alongside collector status and notifications. Configured systems can send event data to RabbitMQ, JMS, MQTT or Kafka brokers for monitor subscriptions.
Operator event entry: Operator apps support either chronological event entry or a summary covering a period, offering different ways to record events.
Relational database choices: Supported databases include Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL and HSQLDB. Teams can choose among these, but need to account for a database in their deployment.

Pricing

Point85 is free and open source, with no paid plan or free-plan cap described. That makes it a cost-conscious option for plants able to supply the technical work of configuration and operation; the software’s price does not remove the need to manage its components and database.

Platforms

Point85 supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted deployments. The suite includes desktop and web operator applications, plus operator apps for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux and Chrome or Edge. The web operator application is distributed as a WAR file for a web server that supports WAR deployment, such as Tomcat. That deployment approach is suited to teams comfortable administering a web server rather than expecting a packaged hosted service.

Who it's for

Point85 is strongest for manufacturers that want control over OEE configuration and can connect equipment through one or more of its supported inputs. The event-resolution scripts, configurable schedules and multiple operator apps give plant teams room to shape event capture and analysis around their operation. It is a weaker fit for organizations that want a turnkey system with minimal technical ownership.

Pros and cons

Pro: A wide range of collection sources, from industrial protocols to messaging, databases and files, can fit heterogeneous plant environments.
Pro: OEE, downtime, quality and loss analysis are supported, with trends and Pareto charts to examine performance.
Pro: Free, open-source software avoids a subscription price and offers several supported relational database options.
Con: Configuration spans Designer, Collector, Monitor and operator applications, so teams should expect to coordinate multiple components.
Con: Collector operation and WAR-based web deployment require Windows or Unix service administration and web-server capability, respectively.
