Overview

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Secret Management gives applications and cloud environments a managed store for credentials such as passwords, API keys and tokens. It is best suited to teams working in OCI that need application secrets controlled centrally rather than embedded in code or configuration. Its rotation, IAM controls and regional replication make it a focused option, though its capacity caps matter for larger or fast-changing stores.

Key features

Access and protection

Secrets can be created and retrieved through APIs, SDKs, the CLI or OCI Console, serving both automated workloads and administrators. Supported content ranges from database passwords and third-party API keys to SSH private keys and OAuth2 or JWT signing credentials. OCI Vault keys encrypt secrets, and OCI manages encryption, decryption, access control and audit logging. Granular OCI IAM policies let teams constrain access, an important control when multiple applications or operators share a tenancy.

Rotation and lifecycle

Automatic rotation runs on intervals from one to 12 months and integrates with Autonomous AI Database and OCI Functions. That can reduce manual credential upkeep for those integrations, but the stated integrations are specific. Automatic renewal, deployment automation and revocation workflows are also included, supporting credential lifecycle management beyond storage.

Regional copies and capacity

A secret can be replicated to up to three destination regions. Replicas are read-only and inherit changes from the source, which supports regional access without creating independently managed copies. A tenancy can hold 5,000 secrets, with up to 30 active versions and 30 versions pending deletion per secret. Those limits give teams a clear planning ceiling; organizations with larger inventories or frequent version turnover should assess whether the caps fit their operating pattern. Generated passphrases top out at 32 characters, and generated RSA SSH key pairs use 2048-, 3072- or 4096-bit keys.

Pricing

The OCI Secret Management plan has custom pricing. It includes a free plan with 5,000 secrets per tenancy, up to 30 active versions per secret and 30 versions pending deletion per secret. That makes it a practical starting point for teams whose needs fit those quotas, but the free offering is not unlimited; capacity planning matters as the number of managed credentials and versions grows. No seat-based allowance is part of the plan terms given here.

Platforms

The service is available through web and API access in a cloud deployment, with hybrid deployment also supported. APIs, SDKs and the CLI suit integration into application workflows, while OCI Console provides an administrative interface.

Who it's for

OCI Secret Management is the clearest fit for application and cloud teams already using OCI, especially those replacing secrets in source code or configuration files with centrally controlled credentials. Its regional replication and IAM policies are useful where workloads need controlled access across regions or teams. It is less compelling for organizations whose secret volume exceeds the tenancy and version caps, or whose rotation needs fall outside the stated integrations.

Pros and cons

Pros

Several access routes: APIs, SDKs, CLI and Console support both workload integration and administrator access.
Integrated safeguards: OCI Vault encryption, IAM policies and audit logging combine protection with access oversight.
Rotation and replication: Scheduled rotation and up to three read-only regional replicas reduce manual handling and support regional use.

Cons

Defined capacity ceilings: The 5,000-secret tenancy cap and 30-version limits can constrain large or rapidly changing inventories.
Specific rotation integrations: Automatic rotation is stated for Autonomous AI Database and OCI Functions, limiting the fit for teams relying on other integration targets.
Limited generated credential bounds: Passphrases are capped at 32 characters, and RSA key generation is limited to three stated key sizes.

Alternatives

For a broader data-loss-prevention remit, choose Trellix Data Loss Prevention: its enterprise products protect endpoints, email, web, networks and data storage, with on-premises or SaaS management. For another paid database activity monitoring option, consider CryptoBind Database Activity Monitoring (DAM), which supports API, self-hosted and web platforms. Datiphy is a paid, self-hosted alternative with a free trial. InsiderSecurity Database Activity Monitor is another paid self-hosted option. Varonis Data Discovery and Classification is a paid, quote-priced choice for Linux, self-hosted and web platforms. DB CyberTech Security is a paid web-based alternative. Aurva Database Activity Monitoring offers custom quotes based on cloud accounts, data sources and modules. DB Audit has a paid Hybrid plan with cloud management and on-premise data processing, and offers a free trial.

Verdict

Choose OCI Secret Management if your applications already rely on OCI and you want secrets managed centrally with IAM controls, scheduled rotation and regional replication. Its focused cloud workflow is the main reason to choose it; the tenancy and per-secret version limits are the main reason to look elsewhere if your credential inventory is large or changes rapidly.
