Scout Suite
What it is
Scout Suite is a command-line tool that assesses cloud security posture by retrieving configuration details through cloud-provider APIs and flagging potential risk areas. It is designed to give security consultants and auditors a point-in-time view of the cloud account being assessed. The CLI creates a local HTML report containing findings and account configuration. Once data has been collected, the project says the tool can be used offline.
It supports AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, with alpha support for Alibaba Cloud, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Kubernetes clusters on a cloud provider, and DigitalOcean Cloud. Scout Suite runs on Linux and macOS or in a self-hosted environment, and is written in Python. Setup instructions cover Python 3.9, 3.10, and 3.11, with installation through pip or by cloning the repository and installing requirements. Cloud credentials must already be configured, for example through a provider CLI. The tool is multi-threaded and keeps configuration data in memory while running; the setup guide warns that a resource-limited VM such as an AWS t2.micro may have its process killed. It is free under the GPL-2.0 license.
For and against
For
- Free, open-source software under GPL-2.0.
- Creates a local HTML findings report.
- Supports AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
- Can be used offline after data collection.
- Installation is documented through pip or Git.
Against
- Cloud credentials must be configured beforehand.
- Resource-limited VMs may have the process killed.
- Some cloud provider support is alpha.
The verdict
Scout Suite provides a local report of cloud configuration and security gaps across several providers. Check provider support status and available memory before running an assessment.
Who it suits
Scout Suite suits security consultants and auditors who need a point-in-time view of a cloud account. It is also relevant to teams able to configure provider credentials and provide sufficient runtime resources.
