Overview

Synology Photos turns a Synology NAS into a home for browsing, organizing, and sharing a personal photo and video library. It is best for people who already own a compatible NAS and want mobile backup and control over who sees shared media.

Its strongest case is a no-subscription workflow that keeps originals on your own storage; its central trade-off is that neither the NAS requirement nor some format and recognition constraints can be ignored.

Key features

Mobile backup and organization

The mobile app can automatically back up photos and videos to the NAS, giving households a continuing way to add phone media to a shared library. Custom and conditional albums, automatic grouping, and face and object recognition help organize collections. Recognition works only on certain NAS models, so the feature set depends partly on the hardware you own. Face search is supported.

Sharing and collaboration

Share individual photos, videos, or albums through links protected by a password or an expiration date. Shared Space allows selected users to work together, with folder-level settings for access and editing. These controls make the product a sensible fit for family libraries or small groups, but collaboration remains tied to NAS-managed folders rather than a standalone hosted account.

Formats and uploads

Synology Photos supports original-quality storage and RAW files. HEIC and HEVC previews, as well as compressed video playback, require Synology Image Assistant, an important caveat if those formats dominate your library. Drag-and-drop uploads are limited to 5,000 files per upload, which may make a large initial import less convenient. A moderate-severity security advisory has fixed releases for DSM 7.2 and DSM 7.1; keep DSM on a fixed release.

Pricing

Synology Photos is free, with no paid premium tier or free trial. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the app's photo and video workflows, but requires a Synology NAS; the separate Synology Photos plan is also 0.00 USD per free, free, and NAS-dependent. The service supports original-quality storage, face search, shared albums, family sharing, desktop app access, and video backup.

The price is attractive for existing NAS owners who want to avoid a separate app subscription. It is not a complete zero-cost storage solution for someone without a Synology NAS, since the required storage hardware is outside the free app plan.

Platforms

Synology Photos supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, Windows, and an extension. The mobile app requires iOS 16 or above or Android 11 or above. Synology Photos TV App supports Apple TV and Android TV, while Chrome and Safari are recommended for web use. The broad client selection helps households reach a library from different devices, though supported mobile versions and browser recommendations narrow the best-fit setup.

Who it's for

Choose Synology Photos if you already have a Synology NAS and want mobile photo and video backup, private storage, shared albums, and folder-level collaboration without a recurring app fee. It is less suitable if you need a cloud account that works independently of dedicated hardware, rely on HEIC or HEVC previews without an additional assistant, or require recognition features on a NAS model that does not support them.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free use with original-quality storage and video backup makes it compelling for existing NAS owners who want to keep a personal library on their own storage.
Pro: Link passwords or expiration dates and folder-level sharing rights give owners useful control over shared media.
Pro: Custom and conditional albums, automatic grouping, and face search offer several routes to organizing a growing collection.
Con: A Synology NAS is mandatory, so the app is not a standalone photo-storage option.
Con: Recognition is limited to certain NAS models, and HEIC/HEVC previews or compressed-video playback require Synology Image Assistant.
Con: Drag-and-drop uploads stop at 5,000 files per upload, a constraint for large batch imports.

Alternatives

For a photo-focused library, see Photo Storage Services or Photo Management Software. Readers comparing storage infrastructure can also browse Storage Replication Software, Storage Migration Software, Google Workspace Backup Software, and NAS Backup Software.

Amazon S3 is a paid, usage-based alternative with a free plan and clients across mobile, desktop, web, and API platforms; consider it if you need a broader storage service rather than a NAS-bound photo library. Resilio Active Everywhere is paid, offers a free trial, and prices by devices or endpoints rather than data volume or transfer usage; it is a different option for readers comparing endpoint-oriented tools. OpenEBS is free, open source Kubernetes storage for readers choosing a storage layer rather than a photo manager. SeaweedFS offers a free community-support plan for any cluster size, with public documentation and no guaranteed response time, for readers considering a cluster-oriented alternative. LINBIT DRBD has a free open-source community version and a LINBIT Starter plan at 1000.00 USD per year, for readers comparing storage replication options. Obstor is free, Apache 2.0 licensed, and self-hosted. XtreemFS is free, open-source BSD-licensed software. Longhorn is free open-source distributed block storage for Kubernetes. These are infrastructure-oriented choices, not direct photo-library substitutes.

Verdict

Synology Photos is a strong choice for Synology NAS owners who want free mobile backup, organization, and controlled sharing in one library. Its main advantage is the combination of private NAS storage and useful media tools without a paid app tier. Look elsewhere if you need standalone cloud storage, or if your NAS and media formats do not meet its recognition and preview requirements.
