Overview

Hornbill IT Asset Management is a cloud service for organizations managing hardware, software, cloud, and on-premise assets across their lifecycle. It suits teams that want asset oversight tied to service workflows, employee self-service, and related IT operations. Its broad scope is appealing, but custom pricing makes it a harder fit for buyers who need a predictable, published price.

Key features

Discovery and service context

Automated discovery covers cloud and on-premise hardware and software, with discovery imports, ownership tracking, service mapping, and dependency mapping. Those connections can help teams see assets in relation to the services they support, rather than maintain an isolated inventory. Organizations looking only for a simple asset register may find this wider service-management scope unnecessary.

License, contract, and cost oversight

The license view compares owned licenses with licenses in use, giving teams a practical way to monitor utilization and prepare for vendor audits. Contract tracking and reporting for capital, operating, and support costs bring procurement and financial oversight into the same system. These controls are useful for managing a broad estate, though they do not by themselves guarantee lower costs or audit compliance.

Workflow and employee services

Drag-and-drop or codeless workflows can automate IT asset processes, including application provisioning and patch deployment. A shared data model is designed to let ITAM, IT operations, IT service management, and security teams share information. Hundreds of codeless integrations and Microsoft Intune as an example may help fit the product into an existing toolset, although the breadth of integration options will matter most to organizations using several connected systems.

Employee-facing capabilities include a service catalog, request catalog, employee portal, knowledge base, HR knowledge base, omnichannel case intake, SLA tracking, and HRIS synchronization. That makes Hornbill relevant to teams coordinating service delivery beyond IT, but also means buyers seeking asset management alone should weigh the added scope against their needs.

Hosting and protection

Deployment is cloud-based. Hornbill says its data centers are SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 Type II certified, and that browser traffic is encrypted via HTTPS/SSL, with other data in transit using secure protocols. Its ITOM discovery service runs through a downloadable Site Integration Service for Windows Server, a consideration for teams planning discovery across on-premise environments.

Pricing

Hornbill IT Asset Management uses custom pricing tailored to requirements, with scalable packages. There is a free plan, but its included capabilities and limits are not established here, so buyers should confirm whether it covers their intended deployment before relying on it. No seat or asset quotas, trial length, or renewal terms are established.

The subscription includes the Essential Success Plan: 24×7 online assistance for critical service availability issues, community forums, knowledge resources, APIs, and up to three named contacts. Organizations that need a different support arrangement can consider paid Premier and Custom Concierge success plans. Custom pricing means teams should obtain a tailored quote before comparing total cost with fixed-price alternatives.

Platforms

Hornbill supports Android, iOS, web, Windows, and API access. The cloud deployment keeps the service online-hosted, while the Windows Server Site Integration Service supports its ITOM discovery function.

Who it's for

Hornbill is a strong candidate for organizations that need asset, license, contract, and cost controls alongside service mapping, workflow automation, and employee service capabilities. Its shared data model and integration emphasis are particularly relevant where ITAM sits alongside IT operations, service management, and security. It is less compelling for buyers who need only a lean inventory tool or who require a clearly priced plan before engaging with sales.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automated discovery spans cloud and on-premise assets, and service and dependency mapping adds operational context to records.
Pros: License utilization, contract tracking, and capital, operating, and support cost reporting support joined-up oversight.
Pros: Codeless workflows and employee-service features can connect asset processes with broader service delivery.
Cons: Custom pricing makes budget comparison difficult until an organization gets a tailored quote.
Cons: The breadth of service and HR capabilities may be excessive for teams seeking asset tracking alone.
Cons: The included Essential plan limits named contacts to three and focuses 24×7 assistance on critical service availability issues.

Choose Ivanti Neurons for Enterprise Service Management if its listed package mix—ITSM, HR, facilities, GRC, PPM, security operations, and self-service—better matches a broad enterprise service remit. Freshservice has a published Starter plan at 19.00 USD per month, billed billed annually, with knowledge management, task management, a support portal, and omnichannel support; it also offers a free trial and no free plan.

Matrix42 FastViewer is another alternative. HaloITSM has a Halo Enterprise Package at 1000000.00 USD per year, billed annually, with unlimited licences and funded implementation for large organisations, plus a free trial and no free plan. OpenText Service Management offers SaaS Express and Premium plans with custom pricing and a 99.9% SLA uptime. TOPdesk has an Essential plan at 51.00 GBP per month per agent, with unlimited assets, tickets, and end users, 100GB free storage, and a 2GB file upload limit; it also offers a free trial and no free plan.

Verdict

Choose Hornbill if you need asset management connected to service mapping, workflow automation, license and cost oversight, and employee services in one cloud system. Its main advantage is that breadth across ITAM and adjacent service functions; its main drawback is custom pricing, which makes it a poor first choice for buyers who need a firm budget or only a straightforward inventory.
