Overview

edX brings together educational content from its own team, universities, 2U, and other institutions and partners. Its catalog spans courses, professional certificates, executive education, microcredentials, and degrees. Courses combine video and text with discussions, problems, and assessments. Many are self-paced, and an individual course generally takes two to six weeks, though some have deadlines.

Auditing is useful for exploring a subject, but it is not a substitute for completing a course: access to material is limited, graded assignments and certificates are excluded, and access ends when the course does. The verified track is the more complete option, adding graded assignments, a verified certificate, and continued access to lectures, readings, and lessons.

Key features

Different levels of study: Learners can move from an individual course to a professional certificate, microcredential, executive education, or degree. That range serves both focused skill-building and longer study goals.
Verified certificates: Certificates come from the university or organization offering the course and include a verification link for employers. This makes the paid track more useful when a learner needs evidence of completion, not just access to lessons.
Mobile learning: The free Android and iOS app supports enrollment, videos, handouts, discussions, announcements, and most assignments; video can be downloaded for offline viewing. Timed or proctored exams cannot be taken in the app, so learners facing those requirements need another way to complete them.
Institutional and business tools: edX supports LMS and custom-platform integrations, including SSO and grade pass-back, and provides institutional analytics, student portals, and administrative tools. Enterprise subscriptions offer employees unlimited access to courses and certificate programs; enterprise services can include advanced analytics, dedicated support, and tailored integrations.
Learning support and accessibility: Higher-education subscriptions include SSO, social learning, collaboration, and grade pass-back. edX aims for WCAG 2.1 AA conformance for its website and course authoring tools, and requires timed captions on course videos.

Pricing

edX uses a freemium model, with free auditing and several paid paths. Prices and terms vary substantially by plan, so the right choice depends on whether the goal is one course, structured credentials, or access for a group.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best suited to
Audit track	0.00 USD per free	Limited course access; no graded assignments or certificate. Materials are not retained after the course ends.	Exploring a course without seeking a credential.
Verified track	Starting at around $50	Unlimited access to course content, graded assignments, and a verified certificate. Learners retain access to lectures, readings, and lessons after the course ends.	Individual learners who want assessed work and proof of completion.
Starter	349.00 USD per year	Unlimited catalog access and tools for a classroom or department.	A classroom or department needing shared learning access.
Campus Plan	Custom pricing	Institution-wide learning access with extended services and features.	Institutions seeking broader access and services.
Essentials	150.00 USD per year	$150 per user, per year; 1 academy and 16 self-paced courses.	A team needing a defined, smaller course selection.
Teams	396.00 USD per year	$396 per user, per year; 8 academies, 2,300+ self-paced courses, and 300+ professional certificates; 14 day free trial.	Teams wanting a broader course and certificate catalog.
Professional Certificate Programs	Starting at $500	Multi-course professional certificate program.	Learners seeking a structured, multi-course credential.
Executive Education Programs	Starting at $2,500	Executive education program.	People seeking executive education rather than a single course.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	For 50+ learners; 8 academies, 2,300+ self-paced courses, and 300+ professional certificates.	Organizations serving at least 50 learners.

The free track gives up assessment, a certificate, and lasting course access. A verified course starts at around $50, while a professional certificate program starts at around $500 and executive education can start at $2,500, making those options a much larger commitment than auditing. For teams, Essentials limits access to one academy and 16 courses; Teams expands that to eight academies and a much larger catalog, with a 14 day free trial. Starter is priced annually for a classroom or department, while campus and enterprise plans use custom pricing.

Platforms

edX is available on Android, iOS, and the web, with offline access through mobile video downloads. Mobile covers much of the course experience, but timed or proctored exams require a different route because they are not supported in the app.

Who it's for

edX is a strong fit for learners who want to sample university-backed courses for free, then pay for graded work and a verified certificate when a course proves worthwhile. It also suits professionals seeking self-paced study or a structured certificate, and institutions or employers that need learning tools, integrations, or access for groups. It is less suitable for someone who expects free auditing to include full course access, permanent materials, or credentialing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Auditing provides a no-cost way to explore courses before deciding whether a certificate is worth paying for.
Pro: Verified learners keep access to course lessons after the course ends, while receiving graded assignments and an employer-verifiable certificate.
Pro: The range from individual courses to degrees and the institutional integration options support different learning and organizational needs.
Con: The audit track excludes graded work and certificates, limits content, and ends access when the course ends, so it falls short for learners who need a completed, documented course.
Con: Verified courses, certificates, and executive education rise from around $50 to around $2,500 or more, which can make deeper study a substantial expense.
Con: Timed and proctored exams are not supported in the mobile app, limiting what learners can finish on a phone or tablet.
