Overview

Elastic Search AI combines Elasticsearch search and retrieval with AI-assisted answers for complex, fragmented datasets. It is best suited to professional teams that need to search across varied data while choosing how and where to deploy. Its free self-managed stack makes it possible to start without a subscription, while Serverless adds usage-based charges and regional constraints.

Key features

Elasticsearch supports lexical BM25 search alongside semantic vector search, giving teams two approaches to finding relevant material. Its retrieval-augmented generation workflow retrieves relevant data and passes it to a large language model to answer a user’s question. That pairing is useful when answers need grounding in an organization’s own information; it is a less direct fit for someone seeking a standalone answer bot without a search and data layer.

A flexible API handles structured, unstructured, and vector data. Out-of-the-box integrations cover logs, metrics, traces, files, web content, and security events, with native integrations for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. This range suits teams bringing operational and business content into a common search system, but calls for a broader platform decision than a narrowly focused search tool.

Elasticsearch can run on Elastic Cloud, on premises, or with its Kubernetes operator. The free self-managed stack includes username-and-password authentication, role-based access control, and TLS encryption, a useful security baseline for teams starting without a paid plan. Elastic also lists FedRAMP High, FedRAMP Moderate, PCI DSS, and CSA STAR among its compliance standards. Support, consulting, and training are available; limited support is included with a Standard Serverless subscription.

Pricing

Elastic’s pricing model is freemium, with a free plan and a 14-day trial. The published pricing note says paid plans start at $99/mo, while the free plan is listed at 0.00 USD per free for the full Elastic Stack, self-managed. That free option is the clearest fit for teams able to operate their own deployment; it avoids a subscription but requires self-management.

Elasticsearch Serverless uses custom pricing based on resources, billed as used. Displayed starting rates are $0.14 per VCU per hour for ingest, $0.09 per VCU per hour for search, $0.07 per VCU per hour for machine learning, and $0.047 per GB retained per month for storage. Because compute and storage are charged separately, costs depend on usage rather than a single flat subscription. Serverless is worth considering when managed cloud deployment suits the workload, but check regional availability and feature coverage before choosing it.

Platforms

Elastic Search AI is available through an API, on Linux, as a self-hosted product, and on the web. Deployment choices include Elastic Cloud, on-premises installations, and the Kubernetes operator, offering control for teams with different infrastructure needs. Serverless itself is available only in select cloud provider regions, and some features are still to come.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for professional teams building AI-assisted retrieval across complex datasets, particularly those that need both lexical and vector search, broad data integrations, or deployment flexibility. Teams wanting a free starting point can use the self-managed stack. It is less suitable for buyers who need predictable flat-rate Serverless costs or require features or regional coverage that Serverless does not yet provide.

Pros and cons

Pros: BM25 and semantic vector search support different retrieval approaches in one platform.
Pros: The API and integrations cover varied data types and sources, including logs, files, web content, and major cloud providers.
Pros: The full self-managed stack is free and includes authentication, role-based access control, and TLS encryption.
Cons: Serverless bills compute and storage separately, so resource use directly shapes the cost.
Cons: Serverless region selection is limited, and some features remain forthcoming.

Alternatives

Korra is another freemium option, with a free plan capped at 100MB and a broad set of listed platforms. Dropbox Dash is a paid alternative with no free plan, a trial, and team plans priced per month or year. Fess is a free option available across self-hosted and desktop platforms. PipesHub offers a free, self-hosted Community Edition with Docker deployment, core indexing and search, BYO LLMs and embeddings, and a no-code agent builder. OpenSearch is a free, open-source option with no licensing fees. SWIRL AI Search offers a freemium model and a paid evaluation pilot. Onyx has a free option and an annual-billed Business plan priced at $20 per user per month. Sinequa is a paid alternative for web and self-hosted use.

Verdict

Choose Elastic Search AI if your team needs AI-assisted retrieval across diverse data and values the choice between a free self-managed stack and cloud deployment. Its combination of lexical and vector search, integrations, and deployment options is the central draw. Look elsewhere if you need simple flat-rate Serverless pricing or dependable access to every feature in every region.
