Overview

Construct 3 is a 2D game engine for building games with visual logic, with JavaScript and TypeScript available when a project calls for code. It suits creators who want to move between a no-code event workflow and programming in one tool. Its browser-first access and broad export targets are appealing, but the free edition’s publishing and feature caps make it a trial rather than a full production option.

It runs in a browser or as an installed app, and its free trial can be opened without an email address, account, download, or installation. After the first load, it can work offline; subscribers must reconnect at least once every seven days to revalidate. That makes trying the workflow unusually low-friction, while the recurring check-in is a real consideration for extended offline work.

Scirra reports more than 1,950,000 annual unique users, more than 250,000 monthly users, and more than 60,000 monthly exports. Those figures suggest a widely used tool, but the more consequential decision is whether its visual event system and paid export options fit your project.

Key features

Visual logic with an escape hatch to code

The event system builds game logic from conditions and actions without requiring a conventional programming language. This is a practical strength for creators who prefer a visual workflow; JavaScript and TypeScript, usable in event actions or separate project files, give more code-oriented users a way to extend that approach rather than abandon it.

Exports and integrations

Projects can be exported as HTML5 for the web, through Cordova for Android and iOS, and through desktop wrappers for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Paid versions add publishing for desktop and mobile, as well as Facebook Instant Games and Playable Ads. The distinction matters: the Free Edition is limited to web and Construct Arcade publishing, so a mobile or desktop release requires a paid version.

Built-in plugins cover Construct Game Services, Google Play, Facebook, Multiplayer, WebSocket, Mobile IAP, mobile advertising, and JSON. Paid versions also add advertising, in-app purchases, and monetisation features. These options make Construct more relevant to projects intended for distribution and monetisation than the free edition alone would suggest, though the free tier excludes multiplayer and other features.

Pricing

Construct 3 uses a freemium model. The Free Edition costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 50 events with a verified email, or 25 as a guest, plus two layers and two special effects. It has no multiplayer or custom loading screens and permits only web or Construct Arcade publishing. Those caps are enough to explore the event workflow, but they constrain both complexity and release options.

The Personal License has custom pricing, unlocks all Construct 3 features, is aimed at individuals and hobbyists, and can be cancelled at any time. It is the natural paid fit for a solo creator who needs the full toolset without an education or business plan.

The Educational Plan costs 9.99 USD per month, uses graduated pricing, and requires at least three seats. It is for schools or other educational use where multiple seats and student access matter; students can use access codes without accounts. Scirra says the plan covers COPPA, CCPA, Nevada privacy law, New York Education Law 2-D, EU GDPR, UK GDPR, the amended Data Protection Act 2018, and the Children's Code. The three-seat minimum is a meaningful drawback for a single educator.

The Startup Plan has custom pricing for companies with annual revenue under $50,000 USD, assets under $100,000 USD, and no more than three employees. The Business Plan also has custom pricing, is required for registered businesses, and offers flexible seat management, with a quote available on request. These plans distinguish small qualifying startups from registered businesses; the latter should not assume an individual licence will cover business use.

Documentation and a community forum are available, and plan questions can be sent to support@construct.net.

Platforms

Construct supports Windows 10 or newer, macOS 10.13 or newer, specified 64-bit Linux distributions, Chrome OS, Android 8 or newer, and iOS 15.4 or newer. Creation in a browser reduces setup friction, while export targets extend from web to mobile and desktop. Mobile exports use Cordova, and desktop releases use wrappers, so the publishing route differs from a native target workflow.

Who it's for

Construct is best suited to 2D game creators who want visual logic first, the option to add JavaScript or TypeScript, and a path to web, mobile, or desktop publishing. It is also a plausible fit for educators who need student access codes and the listed privacy coverage. It is less suitable for anyone who needs multiplayer, complex event capacity, or mobile and desktop publishing while remaining on a free plan.

Pros and cons

Pros: Visual event logic avoids making conventional programming mandatory, while JavaScript and TypeScript remain available for code-heavy needs.
Pros: Browser access and a no-registration trial let prospective users try the workflow without installation or an account.
Pros: Paid publishing reaches web, mobile, desktop, Facebook Instant Games, and Playable Ads, with monetisation integrations available.
Cons: The Free Edition caps events, layers, and effects and excludes multiplayer, custom loading screens, and mobile or desktop publishing.
Cons: Subscribers must reconnect every seven days to revalidate, which limits uninterrupted offline use.
Cons: The Educational Plan requires three seats, which may be excessive for a single teacher or small class.

Alternatives

If the priority is assets rather than a game engine, GameArt2D offers a freemium catalog with a free-assets plan. GameMaker is another freemium game-development option; its free plan is non-commercial and excludes console exports, so it is a different fit for projects that can accept those limits. Buildbox is a paid alternative with Beginner and Pro tiers distinguished by world, scene, and AI-token limits.

Cocos Store, CraftPix, and Quaternius are asset-focused alternatives rather than direct engine comparisons. itch app is a free, open-source desktop app for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Unity Version Control is a freemium version-control option with cloud seats and storage on its free tier, rather than a game engine.

For broader comparisons, see Game Engine Software, Game Development Software, or Game Visual Scripting Software. Asset browsing is covered by Game Asset Marketplaces, while Game Leaderboard Software is relevant to projects focused on scores and rankings.

Verdict

Construct 3 is a strong choice for 2D creators who want visual event logic without giving up JavaScript or TypeScript, and who value browser access plus exports spanning web, mobile, and desktop. The main reason to look elsewhere is its free tier: publishing is web-only and key capabilities are capped or withheld. Start with the browser trial; choose a paid plan when the project needs broader publishing, and match the licence to whether you are an individual, educator, startup, or registered business.
