Overview

RetroStack is a shared board for live retrospectives, brainstorming, and group decisions. It is best suited to agile and distributed teams that want guests to contribute without creating accounts. Its mix of anonymous participation, flexible voting, and AI-generated follow-up makes it a capable free option, though possible usage caps could be a constraint for teams running frequent or busy sessions.

Key features

Six prepared board formats give facilitators a way to get a session moving, while custom boards allow teams to adapt the structure to their own process. Everyone can edit the same board live on phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops, a practical advantage when a team is spread across devices and locations.

Facilitators can allow 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 votes per section, or remove the limit. That range supports anything from focused prioritization to broad input, but potential per-session vote limits may frustrate teams relying on repeated voting or large groups. Anonymous participants have the same feature set as other users, and a board can be started without an account. This lowers the barrier for occasional contributors and suits sessions where people may prefer not to attach their names to feedback.

AI analysis can identify team sentiment and recurring themes, produce action items, and recap a meeting. Those capabilities can help convert discussion into next steps, but the analysis processes user content through OpenAI. RetroStack says it does not use that content to train AI models. Teams that prefer not to send discussion content for AI processing can still use the board without requesting analysis.

Boards can be shared through private links and exported to PDF or JSON, giving teams a readable record or a machine-readable format. Action tracking is supported, which complements the generated follow-up items. Authentication options include email and password, Google, Apple, or anonymous use. RetroStack says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with access controls, authentication requirements, and security-incident monitoring. Email technical support has a stated response time within 24 hours.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and covers web, iOS, Android, and Mac without requiring sign-up. It includes the core appeal of RetroStack: live collaboration, templates, anonymous feedback, action tracking, and exports, with AI analysis among its capabilities. There is no paid tier to weigh against it in the stated plan. The trade-off is that RetroStack may limit board creation, notes per section, votes per session, and daily AI analysis requests. Teams with high meeting volume should account for those possible caps before making it their standard workspace.

Platforms

RetroStack supports web, iOS, Android, and macOS. That spread makes it suitable for teams joining from phones as well as desktop computers, with everyone contributing to the same live board.

Who it's for

RetroStack is a strong fit for agile, remote, and distributed teams that run retrospectives, planning, brainstorming, or decision-making sessions and want anonymous guest participation. It is less compelling for teams that need predictable high-volume quotas or do not want meeting content processed by an external AI service.

Pros and cons

Pros: No account is needed to start a board, and anonymous participants retain the full feature set, reducing friction for guests.
Pros: Voting controls can be tuned from a small number of votes to unlimited, helping facilitators shape prioritization.
Pros: PDF and JSON exports, private sharing links, and action tracking support both distribution and follow-up.
Cons: Possible limits on boards, notes, votes, and daily AI requests make sustained or heavy use less predictable.
Cons: AI analysis sends content through OpenAI, which may not suit teams that keep meeting discussions within their own systems.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, see Retrospective Software.

Echometer is worth considering for teams that need Linux or Windows support and a defined free allowance of one team, 25 workspace members, unlimited retro guests, and one retro per month after its trial period, with an archive of two retros per team.

FocusRetro suits web-only users who want a free plan with three personal boards per month, core retro templates, voting and reactions, phase timers, and action items.

Neatro is another web option for teams that can work within a 10-member free tier and want unlimited retrospectives and radars, more than 70 templates, basic facilitation tools, and 30-day data history.

Reetro may suit teams that prefer a defined free allowance of three teams, nine members per team, and 10 active boards, but its free plan has no AI features.

Retrospected is an option for teams seeking self-hosted availability, unlimited retrospectives, customization, Giphy integration, anonymous accounts, and a 40-post free allowance.

ScatterSpoke is a web and API alternative with a free plan limited to one seat, alongside unlimited static surveys and responses and one-time allowances for Agent Surveys and Ask credits.

FreeRetrospectives is a web-based free alternative offering rooms, live chat, templates, action tracking, exports, AI recaps, health checks, and bridge workflows without per-user pricing.

QRetro is a web-based free option with no team limit, board quota, or per-seat fee, and includes planning poker.

Verdict

Choose RetroStack if your team wants a free, cross-device board that lets people contribute anonymously and turns discussion into shareable records and AI-assisted follow-up. Its strongest case is the combination of no-sign-up participation, configurable voting, and useful outputs in one workspace. Look elsewhere if your usage needs firm, generous quotas or if sending meeting content through OpenAI is unacceptable.
