Best NAS Software in 2026
Updated
In short: TrueNAS is ranked #1 of 21 as of 5 October 2026, ahead of ZimaOS and KitchenAsty. The best-ranked option with a free plan is ZimaOS.
Choosing NAS software starts with how you want to organize and manage storage, then extends to the services and workloads you plan to run alongside it. Compared on storage pools, snapshots, user management and app catalog, these options also show whether cloud sync, containers or virtual machines are supported. Free-plan availability and paid-from pricing give you additional points for weighing access and cost. TrueNAS, ZimaOS and OpenNAS are names to consider as you compare the capabilities listed here. Think about which storage and management features matter to your setup, and whether you need the broader application or virtualization support.
