Rockstor
What it is
Rockstor is an open-source network attached storage and private cloud storage system built on Linux and BTRFS. A web interface manages storage and can be reached from a smart device on a local network or over the web. It supports storage pools, user management, scheduled or on-demand copy-on-write snapshots, and online capacity scaling. Files can be shared through NFS, Samba, SFTP, and AFP with Linux, Mac, Windows, and mobile devices. BTRFS features include checksums, compression, and bitrot protection, while asynchronous replication supports disaster recovery. Backup options include Rsync, Apple Time Machine, and Windows Backup. A customizable resource dashboard and SNMP provide monitoring. Docker-based Rock-ons add applications for VPN, cloud storage, syncing, and media streaming. Installer profiles cover openSUSE Leap 16.0, Tumbleweed, Slowroll, Raspberry Pi 4, and ARM64 EFI targets; some are experimental during the 5.5 testing phase. The Raspberry Pi 5 profile is experimental, and setup cannot proceed on its jeOS base image through zypper because that image uses ext4 instead of BTRFS. Community support is directed through the Rockstor forum.
For and against
For
- BTRFS checksums, compression, and bitrot protection
- NFS, Samba, SFTP, and AFP sharing
- Scheduled and on-demand snapshots
- Docker-based Rock-ons app catalog
- Rsync, Time Machine, and Windows Backup
Against
- Some installer targets are experimental
- Pi 5 jeOS setup cannot proceed through zypper
- Support is community based
- Requires Linux and BTRFS infrastructure
The verdict
Rockstor provides broad storage, sharing, backup, and container capabilities through a browser-managed Linux platform. Installer maturity varies by target, especially for experimental profiles and Raspberry Pi 5.
Who it suits
Rockstor suits users building self-hosted storage and private cloud systems on Linux and BTRFS. It is relevant to people needing file sharing, snapshots, backups, replication, container apps, and browser management.
