DPlaneOS
What it is
DPlaneOS is a ZFS-first storage operating system for homelab and small-office NAS deployments. It manages pools, datasets, snapshots, replication, encryption, quotas, S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, and POSIX ACLs. Sharing options include SMB with Time Machine support, NFS, iSCSI, and NVMe-oF. It can manage Docker and Compose stacks, ZFS-clone sandboxes, atomic updates with rollback, and an in-browser terminal. Identity options include local users, LDAP or Active Directory, OIDC single sign-on, TOTP two-factor authentication, and API tokens. Cloud synchronization supports S3, Backblaze B2, Google Drive, Azure, Dropbox, and rclone-supported targets. The system pairs a Go daemon and PostgreSQL state with a React interface and NixOS appliance. Installation supports x86_64 and aarch64, including Raspberry Pi 5, and offline ISOs are available. The free Community Edition is licensed under AGPLv3. Minimum hardware is a 64-bit CPU and 8 GB RAM, with 16 GB recommended. The project is maintained by one person and has no vendor support; several HA configurations and NVMe-oF over TCP are experimental.
For and against
For
- Manages ZFS pools, datasets, snapshots, and replication.
- Supports SMB, NFS, iSCSI, and NVMe-oF sharing.
- Cloud sync includes S3 and several named providers.
- Installation supports x86_64 and aarch64.
- Community Edition is free under AGPLv3.
Against
- Requires a 64-bit CPU and at least 8 GB RAM.
- No vendor support is provided.
- Several HA configurations are experimental.
- NVMe-oF over TCP is experimental.
The verdict
DPlaneOS brings storage, sharing, containers, identity, and cloud synchronization into a ZFS-focused NAS system. Its experimental features and lack of vendor support make project maturity a key consideration.
Who it suits
DPlaneOS suits homelab and small-office users building a NAS around ZFS who are comfortable managing storage and system software. Its hardware minimums, experimental features, and lack of vendor support are worth weighing.
