Usually, yes: if you make a cover of a copyrighted song, you need authorization for the uses you plan to make of it. Recording your own vocals or changing the singer with AI does not by itself clear the song’s composition, and using the original recording can involve a separate set of rights. A cover tool’s terms do not automatically grant either permission.
Which Rights Can A Cover Involve?
A song’s composition—the music and lyrics—and a particular recording of that song are separate works. If you sing or generate a new performance over your own accompaniment, you are not using the original recording, but the composition may still be protected. If you upload or sample a commercial recording, you may also be using that recording.
The permissions you need depend on what you do: making a private draft, posting a video, streaming or distributing an audio track, and using it in an advertisement are different uses. Do not assume that permission for one use covers the others. The applicable rules also depend on the country and the facts of the use; this is general information, not legal advice.
Does An AI Cover Tool Give You Permission?
No. A tool can process audio or generate a cover, but that does not establish that you have permission to use the song or any uploaded recording. Check the service’s terms for its rules on uploads, voice models, and commercial use, then separately confirm that your intended use of the song is cleared.

For example, FineShare Singify describes itself as a cover generator and says commercial use is restricted under its service terms. HitPaw AI Song Cover says commercial use may require separate authorization or licensing. Those statements describe the services; they do not confirm that a specific song is cleared. Review the current terms before uploading or publishing.
What If The Cover Copies A Real Singer’s Voice?
Get consent before cloning or impersonating an identifiable person’s voice, and check the tool’s terms for the voice model and your planned use. Having permission to use a song does not establish permission to imitate its singer, and consent to use a voice does not clear the song.

Spotify said in September 2025 that vocal impersonation is allowed on its service only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. In August 2026, it announced an “AI Persona” badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated. These are Spotify policies and transparency measures; they do not grant music rights or replace checking the rules of another platform. A Practical Galaxy Workflow Before You Share
- Decide what you are making. Note whether it is a private draft, a public video, a released audio cover, or commercial content, and whether you will use the original recording or a newly made backing track.
- Check the song and recording. Identify the composition and, if relevant, the source recording. Confirm that the rights or license cover the exact format, platform, territory, and use you intend. If you cannot establish that, do not treat the cover as cleared.
- Check every voice and upload. Get consent for an identifiable person’s voice, verify you may upload the source audio, and read the tool’s terms for voice use and commercial restrictions. Keep a copy of permissions and the terms that applied when you created the file.
- Make and keep a clean source copy. On your Galaxy, keep the original recording or exported cover separate from edited versions, along with notes identifying the song, source audio, voice consent, and intended use. A clean file and records help with organization; they are not a license.
- Review the destination’s current rules. Check the upload service’s cover-song, AI voice, and commercial-use policies before publishing. A tool’s permission and a platform’s acceptance do not establish that all underlying rights are cleared.
When You Cannot Confirm Permission
Use a song you wrote, a composition whose applicable rights you have verified, or music offered under a license that clearly allows your planned use. Read the license conditions, including attribution or commercial-use limits, and confirm they cover any recording or voice material you add. If a right or term remains unclear, ask the relevant rights holder or a qualified professional before release.
