Overview

TrueLayer Data API is bank-data infrastructure for companies building financial services, not a consumer money-management app. It is a strong candidate when a product needs several kinds of bank and card data through one integration; the trade-off is that production use requires a business relationship and commercial agreement.

Its data can underpin account verification, aggregation, affordability checks, rewards, insights and money management. Teams seeking a ready-made app or unrestricted production experimentation should look elsewhere.

Key features

Bank and card data

The API covers identity, accounts, credit cards, transactions, balances, standing orders and direct debits, with JSON responses and real-time refresh. Account records can include a holder’s name, account number and IBAN. Card records can include the network, last four digits and name on the card, as well as card-level balances and transactions. That breadth is useful for products that need to combine account verification with transaction-based services, though it remains data infrastructure rather than a finished customer-facing experience.

Connection and authentication

Connection options include redirect, embedded, app-to-app and API-only/custom UI. TrueLayer offers a customizable user journey; regulated customers may instead build a custom authentication flow. Non-regulated customers and agents of TrueLayer customers must use the customizable flow, limiting control for teams that need to own the entire authentication experience.

Developer, security and support

Client libraries are listed for Node.js, Python, Java and .NET, alongside a Web SDK, mobile SDKs and hosted payment-page options. TrueLayer states that it holds ISO 27001 certification, has SOC 2 Type 2 coverage for 1 February 2023 to 31 January 2024, and has Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation. It also states that it is regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority and that TrueLayer (Ireland) Ltd is authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland. API connections require HTTPS; data is encrypted in transit and at rest using protocols such as TLS 1.2.

A one-hour cache applies to identical Data API requests, and persistently unreasonable request volumes may be throttled or blocked. Support runs Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM GMT, through Help Centre chat and tickets. These constraints matter for systems that expect repeated identical requests to return freshly fetched data or need support outside those hours.

Pricing

Sandbox: 0.00 USD per free (billed Free). It provides testing with mock data and no production access, making it suitable for integration work before a commercial commitment, but not for validating a live-data service.

Production: custom pricing, based on volume and use case. It is for registered businesses or commercial entities and requires a signed commercial agreement plus KYB/KYC. There is no published production price, so teams must factor sales and onboarding into their evaluation.

Platforms

TrueLayer lists Android, iOS, web and API support. The API is the core integration point, with mobile SDKs and a Web SDK available for customer-facing flows.

Who it's for

Choose TrueLayer Data API if you are building a financial product that needs bank identity, account, card or transaction data and can meet the commercial and verification requirements for production. It is a poor fit for individual consumers, teams seeking a finished budgeting app, or projects that require production data before agreeing commercial terms.

Pros and cons

Broad data coverage: account, card, transaction and balance data, plus standing orders and direct debits, can support several financial use cases through one API.
Multiple integration paths: redirect, embedded, app-to-app and API-only/custom UI approaches give teams choices, while libraries cover four programming languages.
Production has a high entry bar: commercial agreement and KYB/KYC exclude casual or individual use, and pricing depends on volume and use case.
Authentication flexibility is conditional: custom authentication is available to regulated customers, while non-regulated customers and agents must use TrueLayer’s customizable flow.
Freshness and support have boundaries: identical requests are cached for one hour, and support is limited to weekday hours.

Verdict

TrueLayer Data API is best for registered businesses building financial services that need a wide range of bank and card data, with the main advantage of broad coverage and flexible connection methods. Its commercial agreement, KYB/KYC requirements and custom production pricing are the main reasons to look elsewhere, especially if you need a consumer app or low-friction production testing.
