Overview

A Data Product combines a dataset with business definitions, ownership, access policies, and lineage. Teams publish products to a shared catalog, where BI tools, APIs, AI agents, and apps can consume them through JDBC or REST. Connections span more than 50 sources, including Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, Hive, Amazon S3, Snowflake, and PostgreSQL—a useful breadth for organizations trying to govern data across varied systems.

The product’s emphasis is controlled sharing and change, not simply defining metrics. That focus is valuable when different teams need governed access to shared data, but may be unnecessary for organizations that only want a standalone semantic layer.

Key features

Governance and controlled change

Policies include RBAC, column masking, and row-level security. Data Products are versioned and tested, with breaking changes reviewed before rollout. Teams can define products in YAML, commit them to git, test before merge, and roll back when needed. This gives data changes a review path familiar to software teams; it also means the approach is best suited to organizations prepared to manage products through structured governance.

CI/CD lineage checks automatically validate upstream freshness before publishing a new version. That provides a safeguard against releasing products based on stale upstream data. The semantic layer translates raw data into business-ready metrics, dimensions, and relationships for BI tools and AI agents.

Deployment, security, and AI

Private cloud, hybrid, and on-premises deployment, including air-gap readiness, make the platform relevant to organizations with strict infrastructure constraints. Enterprise security includes row- and column-level RBAC and ABAC, Apache Ranger, HashiCorp Vault, Okta, LDAP, dynamic masking, column-level encryption, and unified audit logging. These controls are a substantial fit for regulated environments, though smaller teams without complex access or deployment requirements may not need this breadth.

AIDA supports plain-language analyst queries and includes an Agentic Control Plane, full-text search over Iceberg tables, and built-in AI tasks. AIDA token usage is billed separately on Enterprise and Mission-Critical, so those tiers’ base credit prices do not capture the full cost of AI use.

Pricing

The pricing model is freemium, with a free plan, a 30-day trial, and paid plans priced per credit. The published starting figure is $0.50 per credit; actual cost depends on usage, so teams should estimate workloads before choosing a tier.

Plan	Price and terms	What it includes
Free	0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever	Up to 3 clusters; standard cluster execution mode for ad hoc queries
Pro	0.50 USD per contact, billed /credit	Flexible cluster execution modes, Streaming Ingest, and advanced cluster management
Enterprise	0.75 USD per contact, billed /credit	Advanced autoscaling, ABAC and SCIM, AWS PrivateLink, and Private Preview access; AIDA token usage billed separately
Mission-Critical	1.00 USD per contact, billed /credit	Elite support and ticketing, advanced governance integrations, lakehouse security and compliance tools, and highest uptime guarantees; AIDA token usage billed separately

Free is a way to start with ad hoc queries, but its three-cluster cap and standard execution mode leave out the flexible execution, ingestion, and management options in Pro. Pro is the entry point for those capabilities. Enterprise adds autoscaling, identity and access features, and PrivateLink; Mission-Critical is aimed at teams prioritizing support, compliance tooling, and uptime guarantees. Starburst advertises 24×7 enterprise support. Paid prices are quoted per contact and billed per credit; confirm how those units map to expected usage before committing.

Platforms

The platform supports API, self-hosted, and web access, with hybrid deployment also identified. Private cloud, hybrid, and on-premises options, plus air-gap readiness, give organizations more control over where the data platform runs than a web-only service.

Who it's for

Starburst Enterprise is built for regulated industries including financial services, healthcare, insurance, and government. It is a strong fit for data teams that need governed products, controlled changes, and broad deployment choices across a large data estate. Teams that want a small, low-overhead metrics tool rather than a governed data platform should compare more focused alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pros

Data Products combine definitions, ownership, policies, and lineage, supporting governed discovery and reuse.
Versioning, review of breaking changes, YAML-based workflows, and freshness checks help control changes before publication.
More than 50 source connections and private, hybrid, on-premises, and air-gap-ready deployment address varied enterprise environments.
Broad access controls, masking, encryption, and audit logging suit organizations with demanding security needs.

Cons

Paid tiers use per-credit pricing, so the headline rate alone does not establish a team’s total spend.
AIDA token use is separately billed on Enterprise and Mission-Critical, adding a distinct usage cost for AI workloads.
The free tier is limited to three clusters and standard execution for ad hoc queries, so it is not a substitute for the paid tiers’ advanced management and execution options.

Alternatives

Semantic Layer Software is a useful category comparison for teams focused primarily on standardizing metrics and business definitions.
Query Engine Software is worth comparing for teams prioritizing query execution over governed Data Products.
Looker is a paid alternative with a free trial and a Standard plan including one production instance, 10 Standard Users, two Developer Users, and 1,000 query-based API calls per month; consider it if those stated user and API allowances fit your needs.
Cube offers a forever-free plan with up to five workbooks, 1,000 daily requests, one-day query history retention, and community support; it may suit teams that can work within those limits.
dbt Semantic Layer has a free Developer plan with one developer seat, 3,000 successful models per month, and one project, but no Semantic Layer; consider it for a limited developer setup rather than semantic-layer access on that tier.
Definite has a free plan capped at two users, two connectors, 1 GB of storage, five credits a month, and daily sync; it may work for teams whose needs fit those constraints.
MetricFlow is free under Apache 2.0 and requires a working dbt project and dbt adapter; choose it if that requirement and deployment model match your setup.
Sema offers a free Sandbox with one connector, one user, 100 chat queries a month, five saved reports, and no scheduled delivery, alerts, or signals; it may fit a narrowly scoped evaluation.
Strata offers a free plan with one developer, 25 users, and two data sources per project, plus unlimited projects and branches; it may suit teams that can stay within the per-project source cap.
Verdonz has a free plan with a guided workspace and sample data, but no own business data; consider it if a sample-data workspace is sufficient.

Verdict

Choose Starburst Enterprise Context Layer if your organization needs reusable governed data products, controlled releases, and deployment flexibility for regulated or complex environments. Its central advantage is bringing governance, versioning, lineage, and business semantics together; look elsewhere if you need only a lightweight semantic layer or cannot forecast per-credit and separate AIDA usage costs.
