Overview

SketchUp’s strongest case is its breadth: a free browser plan, paid web and iPad access, and higher tiers for desktop modeling, documentation, rendering, and industry-specific work. The 3D Warehouse library and Extension Warehouse can extend projects beyond the base feature set. That flexibility comes with meaningful plan boundaries, so buyers should identify the workflow they need before choosing a tier.

SketchUp is part of Trimble, which says more than one million industry professionals use it. The company was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Westminster, Colorado.

Key features

Modeling and visualization: SketchUp supports parametric modeling and animation tools, with render-engine options. Studio adds photorealistic visuals, rendered animations, and 360-degree panoramas, but those advanced visualization workflows are limited to Windows.
Models and extensions: 3D Warehouse offers millions of pre-built models and materials; Extension Warehouse has more than 600 extensions for automation and expanded functionality. That ecosystem can save setup time and widen the toolset, though it does not remove the need to choose the right plan.
Sharing and administration: Trimble Connect supports secure sharing, real-time viewing and commenting, and collaboration. Team admins can manage users and licenses; larger teams can use volume pricing, SSO/Federation, and standardized renewals.
Education and learning: SketchUp for Schools is free for eligible Google Workspace for Education or Microsoft Education accounts and runs on Chromebooks or other internet-connected computers. It includes lesson plans, 3D printing, community support, and Google Drive or OneDrive storage. SketchUp Campus also offers free self-paced training, alongside YouTube and a community forum.

Pricing

SketchUp offers a free plan and paid tiers. Annual subscriptions and monthly plans are available, and subscriptions generally auto-renew for an equal term. Annual purchases can be refunded within 14 days; monthly purchases within 7 days of initial purchase.

Free — 0.00 USD per free: Browser-based SketchUp for Web, Trimble Connect cloud storage, and 3D Warehouse access. It is a sensible way to learn or handle personal projects, but it is not for commercial use.
Go Annual — 10.75 USD per month (billed annually): SketchUp for Web and iPad, unlimited cloud storage, and Photoreal Materials. This is the lower-cost fit for web- and iPad-based design; it gives up the desktop modeler and LayOut documentation included with Pro.
Pro Annual — 33.25 USD per month (billed annually): A desktop 3D modeler, LayOut 2D documentation, PreDesign, and Extension Warehouse access. It is the more complete general professional tier for desktop design and documentation.
Studio Annual — 71.58 USD per month (billed annually): Windows-only advanced workflows, Revit importer, point-cloud modeling, photorealistic visuals, rendered animations, and 360-degree panoramas. Choose it when those visualization and BIM workflows justify the higher price and Windows requirement.
Pro Scan Annual — 41.58 USD per month (billed annually): Windows-only Scan Essentials and point-cloud import for scan-to-3D work. This is more focused than Studio and does not include the listed rendering capabilities.
Pro Civil Contractor Annual — 41.58 USD per month (billed annually): 3D-to-field workflows, Trimble Site Contractor integration, and field-data import for stakeout and excavation work.
Pro Advanced Workflows Annual — 49.92 USD per month (billed annually): Windows-only interoperable workflows with Scan Essentials and a Revit importer. It suits users who need those integrations rather than Studio’s visualization package.

The maker also offers custom pricing for large teams, with volume purchasing and user-management options. A trial is offered, but its duration and terms are unclear; the pricing note gives a 7-day trial, so confirm the terms before relying on it.

Platforms

SketchUp is available on iOS, web, and Windows. Go adds iPad access, while the Studio, Pro Scan, and Pro Advanced Workflows plans impose Windows-only limits on their advanced workflows. The free education plan runs on Chromebooks or any internet-connected computer.

English support is available Monday to Friday, 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. MT; German and French support runs Monday to Friday, 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. MT. Trimble says it is committed to privacy and earning user trust.

Who it's for

SketchUp is a strong fit for designers who want to start with browser modeling and add desktop documentation, extensions, visualization, or field workflows as their needs become more specific. It is less suitable for commercial users seeking a free plan, or for teams that need Studio’s advanced workflows without Windows.

Pros and cons

Pro: The path from free browser use to desktop and specialist plans lets users choose a workflow instead of buying the top tier by default.
Pro: Millions of library models and more than 600 extensions can broaden projects and automate parts of a workflow.
Pro: School access includes lesson plans, 3D printing, and cloud storage for eligible education accounts.
Con: Free is explicitly non-commercial, so it is not a no-cost option for professional work.
Con: Studio’s visualization and BIM workflows, along with several scan and interoperability plans, are Windows-only.
Con: The higher tiers separate related needs across distinct plans, making it important to compare workflow requirements before committing.

Alternatives

If you want a browser-based alternative whose free documents are public and non-commercial, consider Onshape. For a free 3D creation suite that is open source and runs on desktop operating systems, Blender is another option. Meshy, Spline, Creo, uMake, Blockbench, and Houdini are also alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose SketchUp if you want a flexible route from web or iPad modeling into professional desktop documentation or specialized design workflows, with a large model library and extension ecosystem. Look elsewhere if you need commercial use at no cost or cannot accept Windows restrictions on advanced visualization and scan-to-3D tools.
