Overview

Salonist is cloud-based management software for appointment-led beauty, wellness and grooming businesses, from hair salons and spas to tattoo studios and pet groomers. It is best for owners who want booking, checkout, stock and staff operations in one system; the free plan is a way to start, but its 50-appointment monthly limit may quickly become restrictive.

The service runs on web, iOS and Android without installation. Clients can book at any hour through a business website, Instagram or the Salonist app, with recurring and package bookings supported. Automatic reminders, cancellation controls, staff calendars, appointment payments and external calendar sync round out the scheduling workflow.

Key features

Bookings and operations

Online self-booking can take appointment requests out of the owner’s hands, while customer history gives staff context for repeat visits. Owners can set different staff access levels, which is useful when employees should not all see the same profiles or information. Salonist also combines memberships, marketing, inventory and staff management with scheduling, making it a broader operational choice than a booking calendar alone.

Checkout and integrations

The integrated POS handles card, contactless and Stripe terminal payments, with bulk checkout, payment reports and stock updates. That link between sales and inventory can suit businesses that sell retail products alongside services. Salonist lists more than 40 integrations, including Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay, Clover, QuickBooks, Qoyod, Tabby, Tamara and Authorize.Net, giving businesses several payment and accounting connections to consider.

Marketplace and branded app

The marketplace can expose a business to new clients, but it carries a 15% one-time fee on the first visit by a new client discovered there. Returning-client and direct bookings do not incur that commission. A custom-branded client app, published under the salon’s name in both major app stores, is reserved for Expert, so businesses that consider a branded app essential need to budget for the top tier.

Support and safeguards

Salonist uses HTTPS to secure customer sessions and says its service availability is 99.95%, with round-the-clock support and maintenance coverage for critical failures or queries. Support includes in-app chat and email, plus on-demand phone support on Essential and higher; support is offered in English, Arabic, French and other languages. Free onboarding and data import cover clients, services, staff, products and appointment history, including migrations from Zenoti, Fresha, Vagaro, Mindbody or spreadsheets.

Pricing

Salonist uses a freemium model with a free plan and a 7-day trial. The free Market Place Listing plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes online booking, calendar and scheduling, staff shift management and 50 appointments per month. That cap makes it a sensible fit for a small operation testing the workflow, not a dependable long-term tier for a business with higher booking volume. Marketplace bookings that bring in new clients also carry the 15% first-visit commission.

Essential costs 59.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It adds unlimited staff, POS, sales and appointment reports, customer history, coupons, inventory and reminders. It is the practical step up for a salon that has outgrown the free quota and needs checkout and stock tools, though it does not include the surveys, rewards, gift cards and campaigns in the next tier.

Advance costs 109.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes everything in Essential plus surveys, rewards, gift cards, campaigns, inventory management and third-party SMS API integrations. This tier makes more sense for operators looking to add retention and outreach tools; it still lacks Expert’s multi-branch reporting and branded app.

Expert costs 179.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes everything in Advance, along with multi-branch reporting, a dedicated account manager, branded app, waitlists, custom integrations and API access. It is aimed at larger or more complex operations that can justify those tools; a single-location business that does not need a branded app or custom integrations may find the lower tiers more proportionate.

Platforms

Salonist is available on web, iOS and Android. Its cloud-based setup requires no installation, which suits owners and staff who need to access the system across desktop and mobile devices.

Who it's for

Salonist is a strong fit for salons and appointment-based personal-care businesses that want scheduling tied to POS, inventory and staff management. Its stated customer range includes hair salons, massage centers, makeup artists, spas, barbershops, bridal salons, tattoo artists, pet groomers, nail salons, aesthetic skin clinics and booth renters. Businesses needing only a simple appointment calendar, or those unwilling to pay a marketplace commission for new-client discovery, should weigh narrower alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pros: Booking, POS, inventory and staff tools share one system, which can reduce the need to coordinate separate operational tools.
Pros: The free plan includes online booking and scheduling, offering a no-cost entry point for businesses within the 50-appointment monthly cap.
Pros: Free migration and onboarding cover key business records and appointment history, easing a move from several named salon systems or spreadsheets.
Cons: The free plan’s 50 monthly appointments can be too limiting once booking volume grows.
Cons: Marketplace discovery takes 15% of the first visit from a new marketplace client, a meaningful trade-off for businesses relying on that channel.
Cons: The branded app and multi-branch reporting require the 179.00 USD per month Expert plan, so they are costly upgrades for businesses that need only one of those capabilities.

Alternatives

For a focused comparison, see Salon Appointment Scheduling Software, Salon Staff Scheduling Software, Esthetician Software, Salon POS Software, Salon Inventory Management Software and Salon CRM Software.

TimeTailor is worth considering when unlimited manual bookings and unlimited staff matter more than an all-in-one salon operations package; its free service plan includes reporting and email reminders, while online booking is a separate 3.90 USD per conta plan.

Treatwell Pro is another freemium option with a free Advanced plan and unlimited staff, but marketplace clients are subject to a new-client commission that varies by location.

Bookido is a freemium alternative with a free plan and trial for buyers who want to compare another salon software option.

Planity Pro may suit businesses seeking an agenda and register package, with product inventory, online gift cards and services, and accounting data export in its Agenda + Caisse plan.

GlossGenius is a paid option for businesses that prioritize a custom booking website, client notifications and email and text marketing; its Standard plan costs 28.00 USD per month, billed monthly.

Altegio is a paid alternative with a one-month subscription shown at 7490.00 HUF per month for team members, excluding VAT.

Boulevard is a paid alternative whose Essentials plan specifies limits of up to five professionals, 100 free texts, 500 free email blasts and 25 GB of storage.

Fresha is a freemium alternative with an Independent plan for one team member and a Team plan for unlimited team members.

Verdict

Salonist is a good choice for a salon or personal-care business that wants booking, POS, inventory and staff operations connected, with a free starting tier and clear paid upgrades. Its strongest case is breadth: one system can cover much of the daily workflow, and migration help lowers the cost of moving. Look elsewhere if the 50-appointment free ceiling is too low, marketplace commission is a poor fit, or the higher-priced Expert features are essential but not worth 179.00 USD per month.
