Overview

Lecturers can upload rubrics in DOCX, PDF, or plain text, then add student submissions individually or as a class. UniRubric drafts grades against the rubric and includes quoted evidence for review. Every grade remains a draft until a lecturer reviews, edits, and approves it, so this is a tool for assisted marking rather than automated grading and release.

Analytic and holistic rubrics, AI assistance, and bulk scoring cover different assessment approaches. Faculty leads also get a dashboard for comparing rubric calibration across markers, with tools to draft a meeting agenda and schedule a calibration meeting. That broadens the product beyond individual grading, though institutions must account for teacher-account fees as well as student-based charges.

Key features

Evidence-backed drafts: Quoted evidence gives lecturers material to check against rubric criteria. Mandatory review preserves staff control but means approval remains part of the marking workload.
Submission options: Rubrics can be uploaded in three common document formats, and submissions can be added one at a time or as a class. Bulk scoring is useful for class workflows, while the final review requirement limits how much of the process can be delegated.
LMS connections: Institutional plans support Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard through LTI 1.3; Brightspace is also included on the contracting page. Assignment & Grade Services are in active rollout, so institutions should not assume that capability is already fully deployed.
Privacy and security controls: Data is region-pinned to Sydney under standard operating conditions, with no cross-region replication. UniRubric states that data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.3 and at rest with AES-256, and that sensitive student identifiers receive per-tenant column encryption. Submissions, rubrics, grades, edits, and feedback are not used to train or fine-tune models.
Retention and access: Deleted assignments are hard-deleted from production within 24 hours and removed from backups within 35 days; grading-run audit logs remain for seven years. Staff access customer data only through institution-opened support tickets, with access logged and limited to data the institution directs them to.

The security page describes alignment with the AU Privacy Act, GDPR, FERPA, and TEQSA. SOC 2 Type I is a Q4 2026 roadmap target, not a completed certification.

Pricing

UniRubric is freemium, with paid plans from $15/mo. The free Lecturer Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides one lifetime marking job, full rubric-anchored output, approval before release, and PDF export, with no credit card required. It is a useful single-job trial, but not a recurring free allowance.

Lecturer Premium · monthly costs 15.00 USD per month for 15 runs per calendar month, six-month rollover, priority queue, and the option to cancel any time. Extra runs cost $1 each through top-up packs. Lecturer Premium · annual is 180.00 USD per year, paid up front, for 15 runs per month with six-month rollover; renewal can be canceled any time. Both suit lecturers marking regularly, with the monthly plan offering a lower commitment and the annual plan requiring upfront payment.

Top-up packs cost 1.00 USD per once for extra runs, sold in small packs. They suit occasional overflow beyond the free job or Premium allowance, and require sign-off before a charge. For institutions, all three marking plans are priced per student per term, with the annual marking line item scaling by student count and terms per year. Institutional Light costs 9.00 USD per year and includes 10 runs per student per term; Standard costs 15.00 USD per year for 25 runs; Heavy costs 25.00 USD per year for 60 runs. Each also charges $18/month/account for teacher account services, and local tax is added to the formal quote. Light minimizes the run allowance, while Heavy gives more headroom; all institutional tiers require budgeting for both student volume and teacher accounts.

Platforms

UniRubric supports web and API access. Its LMS integrations are part of the institutional product, making it a better fit for universities planning an LMS-connected deployment than for users seeking a mobile app.

Who it's for

Lecturers who want evidence-backed rubric drafts and are willing to review every grade are the clearest fit. Universities may value the LMS connections and faculty calibration tools, particularly when coordinating markers. It is less suitable for anyone expecting unsupervised grading, or for individual lecturers who need a generous recurring free quota.

Pros and cons

Pro: Every grade requires lecturer review and approval, keeping final grading decisions with teaching staff.
Pro: Quoted evidence alongside rubric-anchored drafts gives reviewers something concrete to evaluate.
Pro: The faculty dashboard supports marker calibration and meeting preparation, extending its usefulness to faculty leads.
Con: The free plan covers only one lifetime marking job, so ongoing individual use requires payment or top-ups.
Con: Institutional costs combine per-student, per-term marking charges with $18/month/account teacher services, plus local tax.
Con: Sydney data residency may not suit institutions that require data to remain in another region.

Alternatives

Browse Rubric Software for more options. Choose Gradescope instead if Android or iOS access matters, or if its free Basic plan’s dynamic rubrics, question-by-question grading, assignment statistics, regrade requests, and data export fit your workflow.

Rubric Scorer is an option for mobile users who need up to three rubrics for one class at no cost. Crowdmark may suit courses seeking a course-based subscription, with pricing quoted by Crowdmark and based on user count.

GradeBoard is worth comparing for web-based marking: its free plan allows 10 learner submissions per month, standard AI, limited rubric uploads, DOCX annotated downloads, basic analytics, 30-day retention, and email support. OpenRubric offers a free first event in exchange for sponsor recognition and permission for an anonymized case study.

Pawtograder offers a free community instance for instructors evaluating it, with ongoing use at scale requiring contact. Quick Rubric is a free web account where rubrics are public and reuse in other projects is limited to non-commercial use. RubiStar is another free web option for educational use, with rubrics subject to deletion if used personally or commercially.

Verdict

UniRubric is a strong fit for lecturers and institutions that want AI-assisted, rubric-based marking without surrendering control of final grades. Its evidence-backed drafts, mandatory approval, and faculty calibration tools make a coherent case for supervised assessment workflows. Look elsewhere if you need a recurring free individual plan, mobile apps, or a deployment whose data residency is outside Sydney.
