Overview

Participants get unique referral links to share and may unlock rewards when referred friends become customers. Teams can build with ReferralHero widgets or connect their own form, and can tailor widget copy and colours. The company says its AI-powered program setup takes 48 hours, a useful promise for teams that want a defined launch path rather than a blank-canvas build.

ReferralHero launched in 2016 and was acquired by Lamar in 2021. It runs on Amazon Web Services, with real-time database replication, backups every six hours, and reported uptime above 99.99%. LD Innovations LLC is the stated owner and data controller. ReferralHero says it has completed its GDPR compliance roadmap and provides EU and UK Data Processing Agreements.

Key features

Triggered email and SMS automations, user segmentation, a leaderboard, manual referral review, and automated coupon or access-code delivery cover much of the campaign workflow. Supported rewards include cash, gift cards, and coupon codes, with a 90-day attribution window. That range is useful for teams experimenting with different incentives; manual review also gives operators a way to scrutinize referrals rather than relying entirely on automation.

Analytics track attribution sources and channels, sharing channels, device, and location, alongside individual subscriber analytics and CSV exports. ReferralHero says it connects to more than 500 external services, including Stripe, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Shopify, and Zapier. That breadth may help teams fit campaigns into existing sales and marketing stacks. For custom implementations, JavaScript and REST APIs and webhooks support integration and real-time data delivery.

Fraud controls include a real-time anti-fraud algorithm and ReCaptcha, with optional participant phone verification by SMS. The tools are valuable for campaigns where incentive abuse is a concern, but ReCaptcha and SMS verification are not included with PRO, so buyers who need those controls must weigh the higher-tier plan. ReferralHero also states that customers have 24/7 technical support to help set up campaigns.

Pricing

The Free Forever Plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows up to 25 subscribers. It includes all PRO features, requires no credit card, and carries ReferralHero branding. That makes it suitable for a small proof of concept, but 25 subscribers is too low for a meaningful ongoing program with broader reach.

PRO costs 199.00 USD per month for up to 10,000 members. It removes the free plan’s tiny audience ceiling, but excludes ReCaptcha and SMS verification. PREMIUM is also 199.00 USD per month and allows up to 50,000 subscribers, includes priority support, and offers a 10-day risk-free period. Its annual prepay offer saves $597 by providing three months free. Because PRO and PREMIUM share the stated monthly price, the larger subscriber cap and priority support make PREMIUM the clearer fit for teams choosing between these two published options; the anti-fraud exclusions still matter.

Enterprise uses custom pricing for bespoke packages. Teams with needs beyond the stated caps should consider that route. ReferralHero is freemium overall, with paid plans starting at 199.00 USD per month and a 7-day trial stated for the service.

Platforms

ReferralHero is available on Android, iOS, and web, and offers an API for software integrations. The API and webhooks make it relevant to teams connecting campaigns to their own systems, not only those using the listed integrations.

Who it's for

ReferralHero fits marketing and growth teams running referral or affiliate campaigns that also want waitlist or contest formats, configurable incentives, audience analytics, and connections to established business tools. The free plan suits a tightly capped initial test. Teams expecting substantial participation should budget for a paid plan, and those requiring ReCaptcha or SMS verification should account for PREMIUM or another suitable option rather than assuming PRO covers them.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad campaign formats, engagement automations, multiple reward types, detailed attribution dimensions, CSV exports, and more than 500 integrations give campaign teams considerable operational range.
Pros: APIs, webhooks, and optional SMS verification provide integration and fraud-control paths beyond basic referral links.
Cons: The free tier stops at 25 subscribers, limiting its usefulness as a live program grows.
Cons: PRO costs 199.00 USD per month and excludes ReCaptcha and SMS verification, so the lower paid tier does not include all stated fraud controls.
Cons: The stated pricing creates little distinction between PRO and PREMIUM at the monthly price: PREMIUM has a higher cap and priority support, while PRO excludes two fraud checks.

Alternatives

GrowSurf is worth comparing for teams that prefer a free affiliate-program tier with up to 1,000,000 participants and a 3% success fee rather than ReferralHero’s 25-subscriber free cap and fixed paid entry point.

Cello may suit teams focused on referral revenue, with its Grow plan at 200.00 USD per month covering up to $50K referral ARR, unlimited referrals, all integrations, and all features.

Extole offers a free plan for current customers generating less than $10M in revenue, so those merchants may prefer to assess its eligibility-based option.

The Referral Network (RefNet) is another paid referral option to compare.

InviteReferrals may be a better fit for teams seeking a lower published starting price: BASIC is 99.00 USD per month and includes 1,000 new referrers per month, unlimited conversions and invites, three campaigns, and one account member.

Talkable is an alternative paid platform with a Standard plan that includes dedicated success support and a practical optimization rhythm.

AppVirality is another paid option to compare.

Referrals.com may suit teams wanting a free plan capped at 20 participants per campaign or a 9.00 USD per month premium-by-brand plan.

Verdict

Choose ReferralHero if your team needs a configurable referral campaign platform with broad integrations, subscriber analytics, and several reward and engagement mechanisms. Its principal drawback is the sharp jump from a 25-subscriber free plan to $199.00 USD per month, with ReCaptcha and SMS verification absent from PRO. Small teams and price-sensitive programs should compare alternatives before committing.
