Overview

Patreon helps creators publish work, build a community, and earn through memberships or digital shops. It suits podcasters, video creators, musicians, artists, and game developers who want free publishing alongside paid access. Its range of creator tools is balanced by a 10% platform fee on income, plus other possible charges.

Key features

Creators can offer monthly or annual memberships, paid tiers, one-time payments, and shop sales, while sharing some work for free and adding paid options later. That flexibility supports different ways of earning from an audience, but the 10% platform fee means creators should account for costs as income grows. Free trials, discounts, and sales can support audience growth.

Publishing includes audio, images, rich-text posts, native video, and livestreams. Each livestream is limited to 12 hours of continuous broadcasting, which accommodates ordinary sessions but not longer uninterrupted events. Community tools include chats, direct messages, comments, email newsletters, and exportable email lists. Creators can establish up to 10 chat spaces and control access by opening them to all members, paid members, or selected tiers.

Podcast tools support importing and syncing shows, managing multiple podcasts, and using Spotify, Synced Feeds, and RSS. Patreon also offers member analytics, insights, creator-first discovery, and integrations including Vimeo, Discord, ConvertKit, Discourse, Wix, and Zapier. Its payment infrastructure handles chargebacks, disputes, and fraud, and Patreon manages most applicable tax collection and remittance. Payouts and pay-ins support 16 or more currencies; payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes may still add to the cost.

Patreon says it uses TLS for sensitive information, HTTPS for traffic, two-factor authentication, and CAPTCHA checks for suspicious activity. It also offers a bug bounty programme and accepts security reports by email. The public API v1 is scheduled to stop working on October 7, 2026, with integrations directed to API v2.

Pricing

Patreon is free to start: the Free to start plan costs 0.00 USD per free, and creators pay when they begin earning. The Standard Patreon pricing plan is also 0.00 USD per free, with a 10% fee on income earned on Patreon, plus payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes. It supports monthly and annual subscriptions, membership tiers, and one-time payments. There are no stated free-tier limits.

The Standard plan has custom pricing and includes up to 100 hours per month of video hosting if you have paying fans. Creators who mainly need the free-to-start option can begin without a stated charge before earning; once they do, the 10% platform fee and additional charges matter. The published Patreon platform fee is also shown as 10.00 USD per month, described as 10% of income earned on Patreon, plus applicable fees and taxes.

Platforms

Patreon is available on web, Android, and iOS, and provides a public API. Its mobile apps extend access beyond the web, while the API v1 end-of-service date makes the transition to API v2 relevant for creators relying on integrations.

Who it's for

Patreon is a strong fit for creators who want to combine free posts with paid memberships, one-time support, or shop sales, and who value built-in community and podcast tools. It is less suited to creators whose priority is minimizing platform fees, since the 10% charge applies to income earned on Patreon before possible additional costs.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple payment models let creators mix recurring memberships, tiers, one-time payments, and shop sales rather than relying on a single offer.
Pros: Publishing, community, and podcast tools bring content and member engagement together, including up to 10 access-controlled chat spaces.
Pros: Free sharing provides a way to build an audience before introducing paid options.
Cons: The 10% platform fee, plus possible processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and taxes, can reduce creator earnings.
Cons: Livestreams cannot run continuously beyond 12 hours, and creators are limited to 10 chat spaces.

Verdict

Choose Patreon if you want one platform for publishing, member engagement, and several ways to earn, especially when free content and paid access need to work side by side. Its creator and podcast tools are the main draw; the 10% fee and additional possible charges are the clearest reason to look elsewhere.
