Overview

Outerbase AI is a database workspace for people who need to ask questions of structured data and turn answers into visual views. It is most compelling for engineers, researchers, and analysts who want query assistance and dashboards in the same platform. Its schema-aware assistant is the standout; the free allowance is small, and self-hosting is reserved for Enterprise.

Key features

Queries grounded in your database

EZQL can turn natural-language requests into queries, charts, and dashboards, using the current database structure as context. That schema awareness makes it a practical fit for users who need answers tied to a particular database rather than a generic SQL draft. The AI editor also repairs broken queries and optimizes query results, useful for refining existing work as well as starting from scratch.

Outerbase can create visualizations from datasets and generate charts in AI conversations, keeping analysis and presentation close together. Trend detection and explanation is coming soon, so it should not factor into a decision to buy today.

Connections and data controls

Connections cover Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and Amazon Redshift. Integrations include DigitalOcean, Neon, Turso, and Cloudflare. That range suits teams working across different database systems, though Free and Hobby users are restricted to transactional databases.

Outerbase says customer data stays in the customer's database while an encrypted schema copy supports AI features. Its controls include two-factor authentication, database-role access, AES/RSA encryption, SSH tunneling, and private AI models that are not trained on customer data. Outerbase also states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA compliant; Enterprise is the plan that includes those compliance features, alongside audit trails and activity logs.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows up to 5 users, 1 base, 10 EZQL queries per month, 3 saved queries, and 1 dashboard. It is limited to transactional databases. Those caps make it a sensible way to try the workflow, but not a roomy option for recurring team analysis.

Hobby costs 9.00 USD per month, per user, billed annually. It raises the ceiling to 10 users, unlimited bases, 100 EZQL queries per month, 25 saved queries, and 5 dashboards, while still restricting database access to transactional systems. It suits small groups whose use fits within those query and dashboard limits.

Pro costs 30.00 USD per month, per user, billed annually. It includes unlimited users, bases, saved queries, and dashboards, up to 1000 EZQL queries, and access to all databases. That removes the database-type restriction and is the clearest fit for broader, regular use, though the query allowance remains capped.

Enterprise has custom pricing. It adds HIPAA and SOC 2 compliance, priority support with a dedicated team, custom AI models, prompt fine-tuning, private cloud deployments, and audit trails and activity logs. It is also the only plan with self-hosting, making it the relevant tier for organizations that require that deployment choice.

Platforms

Outerbase is available on the web and through API, with desktop apps for Macs with M1 or newer chips and modern Windows devices. Self-hosting is limited to Enterprise customers, so teams seeking to manage deployment themselves need to budget for a custom-priced plan.

Who it's for

Outerbase fits database users who want natural-language query help alongside chart and dashboard creation, especially when schema context and a broad set of database connections matter. It is less suited to teams needing self-hosting on a low-cost tier, or users whose regular query volume exceeds the plan caps.

Pros and cons

Pros

Schema-aware EZQL: It can use the current database structure to generate queries, charts, and dashboards, rather than working without database context.
Query-to-visual workflow: Query drafting, repair, optimization, and chart generation sit together, which can reduce the separation between finding an answer and presenting it.
Broad connection support: The listed database connections span transactional and analytical systems, with all databases included on Pro.

Cons

Strict entry-tier quotas: Free allows 10 EZQL queries per month and one dashboard; Hobby raises that to 100 queries and five dashboards but remains transactional-only.
Pro still has a query ceiling: Its 1000 EZQL queries limit may constrain heavier usage despite unlimited users and dashboards.
Self-hosting requires Enterprise: There is no lower-cost self-hosted option, and Enterprise uses custom pricing.
Trend analysis is not ready: Detection and explanation of trends is coming soon rather than part of the current feature set.

Alternatives

For a broader set of tools in this category, browse AI SQL Generators or AI Database Assistants.

SQL Mocker is a web-based freemium option; its Explore plan provides 50 total AI queries for one user, while Starter offers 100 queries per month for 10.00 USD per month. Choose it when a browser-only tool and a smaller query allowance are sufficient.

Wren AI is worth considering if an open-source context engine for individual developers, used through CLI and MCP without a UI, better matches the workflow.

NatureQuery offers a free plan with 50 queries per month and one database connection, plus Excel and CSV export and 30-day query history. It is a fit for users who value those export and history features on a free tier.

QueryPlane has a free self-hosted or web plan for up to three apps, one database connection, and 50 AI prompts per month. It is a more direct option when self-hosting is important without starting at Enterprise pricing.

Text2SQL.ai is a paid alternative with API access and apps for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows; its Pro Plan includes unlimited messages per month and 100 API requests.

Vanna AI has API and self-hosted options as well as web access; its Explorer plan costs 50.00 USD per month and includes 20 questions per day and an API.

Chion is a paid web option with a seven-day trial; its Starter plan costs 29.00 USD per seat per month and includes 50 credits per month.

SQLAI.ai is a paid alternative with a Hobby plan at 4.00 USD per month that includes 50 queries per month.

Verdict

Choose Outerbase AI if you want schema-aware natural-language query assistance in a workspace that can also create charts and dashboards across a wide range of databases. Its free plan is useful for a constrained trial, but its monthly query caps and transactional-only lower tiers make Pro the more practical choice for sustained or varied database work. Look elsewhere if self-hosting is essential and Enterprise is out of reach, or if your usage needs exceed the published query allowances.
