Overview

openSIS brings student and staff records, health information, admissions, scheduling, attendance, grading, billing, discipline, lesson plans, and analytics together. That breadth can make it a practical central system for school operations; schools with more complex needs should weigh the paid tiers’ staffing minimums and account terms before committing.

Integrations include Moodle, Canvas LMS, Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Stripe, PayPal, QuickBooks, Office 365, Azure Active Directory, and Google Workspace. Administrators can export data in delimited files. Open Solutions for Education, Inc. says it is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified for information security management. The privacy policy describes role-based access controls, administrator multi-factor authentication, encryption, and periodic third-party penetration testing, and says OS4Ed does not sell personal information or student data to third parties.

Key features

Academic and administrative operations

Attendance, grading, scheduling, admissions, and discipline sit alongside records, billing, lesson plans, and analytics. Schools seeking one system across those functions may value that scope; those needing only a narrower task may find the breadth unnecessary.

Mobile access and support

The SaaS Mobile Connect app for iOS and Android provides attendance, grades, assignments, schedules, billing, and school communication. Support spans self-service, bot assistance, email, telephone, and social media, with training available. Advanced adds API access with full documentation, which is the relevant step for schools that need a documented integration path beyond the listed integrations.

Pricing

openSIS is freemium, with a 15-day trial and paid plans billed annually per staff member. The headline starts at $4/mo (annual), but the actual fit depends on account caps and staffing minimums.

Plan	Price and terms	What it means
Community Edition	0.00 USD per free	Free and open source, downloadable, and self-managed. It suits schools prepared to install and operate their own system.
Core Startup	$4 / staff / month, billed annually	One school, 5 staff, 50 student accounts, and 100 parent accounts. It is the least expensive SaaS choice, but the fixed caps rule it out for schools that need more accounts.
Essential	$8 / staff / month, billed annually	Starts with 5 staff and allows unlimited student and parent accounts and unlimited schools. It is the more suitable step up when Startup’s account limits are too restrictive.
Advanced	$12 / staff / month, billed annually	Requires at least 10 staff accounts and includes unlimited student and parent accounts plus API access with full documentation. The minimum makes it a poor fit for smaller teams that do not need the API.
District / State / Enterprise	Custom pricing	Advanced Tier with a minimum 200-staff subscription, aimed at large organizations rather than individual schools.

Community Edition avoids subscription fees but leaves installation and management to the school. Core Startup’s low per-staff price comes with account ceilings that cannot be expanded within that tier. Essential removes student and parent caps, while Advanced raises the staffing threshold and price. A 15-day trial gives schools a limited window to assess the paid offering.

Platforms

openSIS supports Android, iOS, API, self-hosted, and web access. Its self-hosted option gives technically capable schools a way to manage the installation themselves; the mobile app extends SaaS access to common school information and communication.

Who it's for

The maker describes openSIS for K-12, higher education, vocational and career technical schools, and virtual education. It is most compelling for institutions seeking a wide operational footprint and able to match their needs to the plan limits. A very small school may fit Core Startup, while schools exceeding its student or parent caps should consider Essential; large districts face Advanced’s minimum 10 staff accounts or the enterprise tier’s 200-staff minimum.

Pros and cons

Broad coverage: Records, attendance, grading, admissions, billing, discipline, lesson plans, and analytics share one system, making it relevant to schools consolidating multiple operational needs.
Flexible deployment: A free downloadable edition offers self-management, while SaaS plans provide a paid route for schools that do not want that model.
Useful integration range: Connections include major learning platforms, productivity suites, identity services, and payment tools.
Startup caps are tight: Five staff, 50 students, and 100 parents cannot be exceeded in Core Startup, limiting its usefulness as a school grows.
Higher tiers impose staffing thresholds: Advanced starts at 10 staff and enterprise at 200, which may force smaller organizations to choose between excess capacity and tighter limits.

Alternatives

Gradelink is a paid alternative for schools looking across Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows; its Payments plan is $0/mo, with transaction fees that may be covered by the school or passed to families.

RosarioSIS is another freemium option with a free self-hosted edition, but it requires PHP and a SQL database and leaves updates to the school.

Fedena offers a freemium option and a Standard plan at 999.00 USD per year, making it worth comparing for schools evaluating a paid yearly package.

Infinite Campus is a paid option with Android, iOS, API, and web platforms.

Wisenet is a paid alternative with an eLearning Connector Standard plan at 160.00 AUD per month on an annual subscription, with a minimum initial 2-year term.

Aeries SIS uses district pricing and requires a sales quote.

Ed-admin uses annual, school-specific pricing and includes all 50 modules and four app portals.

PowerSchool Behavior Support is a paid option with pricing available through a demo inquiry.

Verdict

openSIS is a strong candidate for schools that want records, academic workflows, and administrative functions in one system, especially when self-management or flexible SaaS tiers suit their operating model. Its main caution is plan fit: Core Startup’s unexpandable caps and the higher tiers’ staff minimums can make the apparent entry price a poor guide to what a growing or larger school will need.
