Overview

OBS Studio is free, open-source desktop software for recording video and broadcasting live. It suits creators who want control over a multi-source production, especially those prepared to configure scenes and audio rather than work in a browser-based studio.

Its strongest case is the combination of unlimited scenes, preview and monitoring tools, and extensive customization at no cost.

Key features

Scenes and production

Scenes can combine windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. The unlimited scene count and custom transitions, including user-provided stinger videos, make it possible to prepare distinct layouts and switch between them during a session. Studio Mode lets you preview a scene before it goes live, while Multiview monitors up to eight scenes. Those controls are useful for a planned production, though they ask more setup than a simple one-source recording workflow.

Hotkeys cover many actions, including recording and streaming controls. OBS supports scheduling streams and replaying or looping streams, but does not support multistreaming. Its primary stream mode is encoder, and maximum resolution is 4K.

Audio and extensibility

The mixer provides per-source filters, including noise gate, noise suppression, and gain, with support for VST plugins. An API, native plugins, and Lua or Python scripts let technically inclined users extend or tailor the setup. That flexibility is a meaningful advantage for customized productions, but users who want a fixed, turnkey workflow may not need it.

OBS supports popular streaming platforms, including Twitch and YouTube. Streams connect directly from the computer to the streaming service rather than passing through OBS servers. Its GPLv2 license permits commercial use subject to the license terms.

Pricing

OBS Studio costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan has no watermarks or usage limitations and can be used commercially; there is no free trial because the software is free. It is a strong fit for individual creators and production teams that want capable recording and streaming tools without a subscription or usage cap. There are no cheaper tiers that trade away features, and no paid plan is needed to access the core software.

Platforms

OBS is a desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux, not a browser-based studio. It supports Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 13.0 or newer. Linux distribution is through Flathub and an Ubuntu 24.04-or-newer PPA. Check the requirements for your system before installing.

Who it's for

OBS is best for streamers, video creators, and other users who need to combine several video and audio sources, prepare multiple scenes, and control transitions or recording with hotkeys. Its plugins and scripts make it particularly suitable for people who want to customize their production. It is less suited to users who need a browser-based studio or multistreaming from one workflow.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited scenes, preview tools, and eight-scene Multiview support detailed live-production workflows.
Pro: Per-source audio filters and VST support offer control over individual audio inputs.
Pro: The free plan has no watermarks or usage limits and permits commercial use under the GPLv2 terms.
Con: It is desktop software, so it does not suit users looking for a browser-based studio.
Con: Multistreaming is not supported, which rules it out for users who need to broadcast to multiple destinations at once.

Alternatives

For game recording, game recording software is the relevant category to compare. Readers focused on camera feeds can browse virtual camera software; those prioritizing capture rather than live production can compare screen recording software. For recorded interview-style programming, see video podcast software, or compare live streaming software for other broadcast workflows. Live TV streaming services are a separate category for viewers seeking TV access rather than production tools.

Medal is a freemium alternative for Android, iOS, and Windows users; its $9.99 USD per month Premium plan adds removable watermarks, auto-generated subtitles, full original-quality uploads, and unlimited cloud storage. SteelSeries Moments is a free Windows alternative. Outplayed is a freemium Windows option, with Core including three months of Outplayed.tv hosting and Premium adding unlimited hosting, ad removal, layout customization, and enhanced fullscreen mode.

NVIDIA ShadowPlay is a free Windows alternative for users who meet its Windows 10 or 11, GeForce 551.52-or-later driver, and supported-GPU requirements. Bandicam is another freemium alternative, with annual and perpetual one-PC personal plans. Streamlabs Highlighter is free for macOS and Windows and includes automated gameplay highlight detection, clip editing, and export within Streamlabs Desktop. Razer Game Clips is a free Windows option with cloud storage at no extra cost; it requires Razer Cortex and a Razer ID. Segra is a free, open-source Linux and Windows alternative for game recording.

Verdict

Choose OBS Studio if you want a free, uncapped tool for multi-scene recording and live streaming, with audio controls and room to extend the workflow through plugins or scripts. Its production controls are the main reason to choose it; the lack of multistreaming and a browser-based studio are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere.
