Overview

Zed is a minimal code editor for developers who want editing, Git, debugging, remote development, and AI tools in one workspace. It suits people who value built-in collaboration and choice of AI provider, but the free plan’s prediction cap and Pro’s usage charges call for attention.

Multi-cursor and column editing, macro recording, language server support, and a built-in debugger give Zed a broad working set without changing its minimal-editor focus. Native Git operations cover staging, commits, pulls, pushes, and diffs, while remote development extends its usefulness beyond a single local project setup.

Key features

The extension ecosystem offers hundreds of options for languages, themes, and more. AI support spans providers including Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, GitHub Copilot, Google AI, and OpenAI. Users can also bring API keys or external agents, a useful degree of choice for developers who do not want their workflow tied to one provider.

Teammates can chat, code together, and share screens and projects. That makes Zed relevant to pair programming and collaborative work as well as solo editing. The team behind it describes 15 years of experience on tools including Atom, Electron, and Tree-sitter.

Pricing

Personal: $0.00 USD per free, free forever. It includes 2,000 accepted edit predictions, with unlimited use through API keys or external agents. This is the sensible starting point for free editing and personally configured AI, but the prediction quota limits reliance on Zed’s included predictions.
Pro: $10.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes unlimited edit predictions and $5 of tokens. Usage beyond that $5 is billed at API list price plus 10%, so the subscription price is not a ceiling for readers who make substantial token-based use.
Pro Free Trial: $0.00 USD per free for 14 days or until the $5 balance is used, whichever comes first. It includes unlimited accepted edit predictions and requires no credit card. The balance-based cutoff means heavier use can end the trial before 14 days.
Business: $30.00 USD per month. It adds organization controls, governance, billing visibility, and role-based access controls. There is no minimum seat count, and organizations of any size can use the plan; order forms are available at 25+ seats. Admins can restrict hosted models, disable edit predictions, and lock data-sharing settings. SSO, SAML, and SCIM are planned but not currently available, a material gap for organizations that require those identity controls today.

Platforms

Zed runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Its combination of remote development and language server support makes it a flexible desktop editor for varied development setups.

Who it's for

Zed is a strong fit for developers who want editing, Git, debugging, extensions, and collaboration together, especially those who want to choose among AI providers or use their own API keys and external agents. The free Personal plan works for readers whose included prediction use stays within 2,000 accepted predictions. Pro is better suited to people who want unlimited predictions and are prepared for token charges beyond the included $5. Business fits teams seeking governance and admin controls, but is less suitable when SSO, SAML, or SCIM is a current requirement.

Pros and cons

Pro: Native Git, a debugger, remote development, language server support, and editing tools give developers a substantial set of capabilities in one editor.
Pro: Hundreds of extensions, multiple hosted AI providers, API-key and external-agent support offer flexibility in shaping a development workflow.
Pro: Chat, shared coding, screen sharing, and project sharing support collaboration without limiting Zed to solo work.
Con: Personal’s 2,000 accepted edit predictions may be restrictive for frequent users of included predictions.
Con: Pro’s $5 token allowance can be exceeded, with further use billed at API list price plus 10%.
Con: Business lacks SSO, SAML, and SCIM for now, which can make it unsuitable for organizations that depend on those identity features.

Alternatives

Choose Code editors to compare a broader range of general-purpose editors, or Pair Programming Software if collaboration is your main priority. Text Editors is another category to consider if your needs center on text editing rather than Zed’s wider development toolset.

Fresh is a free option for readers who want an open-source editor with no paid tiers or usage limits stated. Kate is a free alternative available on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Lapce is a free open-source code editor on those same desktop platforms.

Qt Creator is worth considering for readers interested in its open-source option, bearing in mind that Qt framework use is subject to LGPL/GPL obligations. RustRover offers a free non-commercial plan for learning, self-education, qualifying open-source contributions, content creation, and hobby development. CodeLite is a free GPLv2 IDE, while GNOME Builder is a free desktop option for Linux on x86_64 and aarch64. Huly Code is another free-to-use alternative.

Readers focused on a particular language can also browse Rust IDEs, PHP IDEs, and Go IDEs.

Verdict

Choose Zed if you want a minimal editor that brings Git, debugging, extensions, flexible AI access, and team collaboration into one workspace. Its free plan is a credible way to start, and Pro removes the edit-prediction cap, but token overages can raise costs. Teams should weigh its useful controls against the absence of SSO, SAML, and SCIM; if those are essential, look elsewhere.
