Overview

Ramp AP is an accounts-payable workflow for companies that want invoices, approvals, and vendor payments handled in one place. It suits small and growing businesses as well as finance teams managing multiple entities. Its free tier makes it approachable, but payment charges and the Plus platform fee can change the economics as volume or team size grows.

Key features

Invoice handling and controls

OCR captures invoice details and line items with a stated 99% accuracy, and purchase-order matching adds a check against what was ordered. Configurable approval routing, roles, and permissions let administrators separate who can view, approve, and pay bills. That structure is useful when informal email approvals no longer give a finance team enough control.

AI agents can code invoices, flag suspicious vendor activity, recommend approvals, and identify invoices eligible for card payment. These tools target repetitive review work, though the more specific AI automation features—such as auto-coded line items and approval recommendations—are included with Plus. Ramp says Bill Pay processes invoices and payments 2.4x faster than legacy software; that is a maker claim, not a guarantee for every company’s process.

Payments and accounting

Bill Pay supports ACH, same-day ACH, cards, checks, domestic wires, and international wires. Vendors do not need Ramp accounts to receive payment, and the AP product can run without Ramp corporate cards or expense management. That standalone option keeps it relevant to teams seeking AP controls without adopting Ramp’s broader finance tools.

Ramp names QuickBooks Online, Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Acumatica, and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central among its accounting connections, and offers more than 200 integrations across other business systems. Custom CSV exports and an open API provide alternatives when a particular connection is unavailable. Ramp also supports W-9 collection, tax-box mapping, and direct IRS and eligible-state 1099 filing.

Access and support

iOS and Android apps are available, alongside web, API, and extension access. Users can handle expenses and ask policy questions through SMS or Slack. Ramp says it has no native Mac or Windows desktop app, so desktop users should expect to work through the web experience. Free includes 24/7 chat support; Plus and Enterprise include 24/7 phone support.

Pricing

Free: $0.00 per free, billed monthly. The no-monthly-software-fee tier includes core AP features, OCR invoice extraction, configurable approval workflows, and payments by ACH, card, check, and wire. It is a sensible starting point for smaller teams, but payment transactions still carry fees, and the plan does not include the Plus automation bundle.

Plus: $15.00 per month, billed $15/mo/user plus a platform fee based on team size; annual billing saves 20%. A free 30-day trial is available, and users can switch plans anytime. Plus adds auto-coded line items, AI approval recommendations, automated batch payments, and payment release approvals. It fits teams that expect those automations to reduce busywork, but the per-user charge and additional platform fee make headcount an important part of the cost.

Enterprise: Custom pricing with annual billing. It adds Workday and Oracle Fusion integrations, local-currency card issuing in more than 30 countries, a dedicated account manager, priority 24/7 global support, and custom implementation. This is the tier for organizations needing customization and those specific enterprise capabilities rather than simply more invoice processing.

Payment charges apply separately: standard ACH costs $0.59, checks $1.99, same-day ACH $10, domestic wires $15, and SWIFT USD wires $20. Overnight check delivery costs $20 per transaction, and check attachments cost $1 per page. Teams with frequent expedited or wire payments should include those charges in their plan comparison.

Platforms

Ramp supports Android, iOS, web, API, and extension access. Its mobile apps cover iOS and Android, while desktop use is through the web rather than a native Mac or Windows app.

Who it's for

Ramp AP is a good fit for small and fast-growing companies that want a free entry point, and for mid-sized or multi-entity finance teams that need configurable approval controls, accounting connections, and more automated processing. Teams can adopt Bill Pay independently of Ramp cards and expense management. It is less compelling for businesses whose payment mix makes transaction fees costly, or whose desktop requirements depend on a native application.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free tier includes core AP, OCR, approval workflows, and multiple payment methods without a monthly software fee, making it practical to start small.
Pros: Configurable permissions, PO matching, and separation of duties support more controlled bill handling as teams grow.
Pros: Standalone use, broad integrations, and vendor payments without requiring vendor Ramp accounts give finance teams flexibility.
Cons: Transaction fees can add up, especially for same-day ACH, wires, overnight checks, or attachment-heavy check payments.
Cons: Plus combines a per-user price with a team-size-based platform fee, so its total cost rises beyond the headline rate.
Cons: There is no native Mac or Windows desktop app, and Free lacks Plus’s named AI and batch-payment additions.

Verdict

Choose Ramp AP if you want a no-monthly-fee way to centralize invoices, approval controls, and vendor payments, with a path to AI-assisted processing as needs grow. Its strongest case is the combination of standalone AP and configurable controls; look elsewhere if transaction costs, Plus’s added platform fee, or the lack of a native desktop app outweigh those advantages.
