Overview

Spotify Prompted Playlists turns a written request into a playlist shaped around your listening patterns and current music and podcast information. It suits Premium listeners who want to steer discovery without picking each track. Its flexible prompts and revision tools are useful, but English-only access, mobile availability and beta limits make it a narrower choice than a general playlist feature.

Key features

Prompts with room to steer

You can describe a mood, memory, activity, era, genre, aesthetic, cultural moment, lyrics, instruments, artist or TV show, among other themes. Spotify uses those prompts alongside listening patterns and real-time information to curate a personalized playlist. That is a good fit for listeners with a particular scene or intention in mind; it is less useful if you want a predictable, manually assembled selection.

Revision and refresh controls

You can refine tracks, edit the prompt, regenerate the playlist, and show or hide notes about why songs or episodes fit. Daily or weekly refreshes help keep a playlist from becoming static. Both scheduled updates and general use are subject to beta limits, however, so this is not an unlimited source of continuously updated playlists.

Podcasts and audiobooks

Podcast playlists can include show and episode recommendations informed by listening history and current trends. Audiobook playlists are in beta for eligible Premium users in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. That broadens the feature beyond music, but audiobook access is limited by eligibility and its beta status.

Sharing and privacy

Free users can listen to a shared playlist, but they will not receive a personalized version or be able to reuse its prompt to make one of their own. Spotify says it uses pseudonymization, encryption, and access and retention policies to protect personal data. Its support page also explains how to create, improve and share playlists.

Pricing

Prompted Playlists is a Premium feature, and the plans that include it differ in account count and audiobook listening. Spotify Free costs 0.00 USD per free and provides ad-supported access to Spotify content, but does not include playlist personalization. A Free listener can play a shared Prompted Playlist, not generate a personal one.

Premium Individual: 12.99 USD per month for 1 Premium account and 15 hours/month audiobook listening. A fit for one listener who wants Prompted Playlists and the included audiobook allowance.
Premium Student: 6.99 USD per month for 1 verified Premium account, available to eligible students. It is the lowest-priced listed Premium option, though eligibility is restricted and the plan facts do not include an audiobook allowance.
Premium Duo: 18.99 USD per month for 2 Premium accounts, for couples at the same address; the plan manager gets 15 hours/month audiobook listening. It suits two eligible co-residents rather than a household needing more accounts.
Premium Family: 21.99 USD per month for up to 6 Premium accounts, for family members at the same address; the plan manager gets 15 hours/month audiobook listening. It offers the most accounts among the listed plans, with the same-address condition.

The feature is in beta and subject to usage limits on every Premium plan; daily or weekly scheduling does not remove those limits.

Platforms

Prompted Playlists is a Premium mobile feature on Android and iOS, and it currently works only in English. Those constraints rule it out for listeners who need desktop access or prompts in another language.

Who it's for

Choose Prompted Playlists if you already use Spotify Premium and want to guide music or podcast discovery with natural-language requests, then adjust the result rather than build a playlist track by track. It is less suitable for Free listeners, people who need broad language or platform support, or anyone who needs dependable, unrestricted scheduled updates while the feature remains in beta.

Pros and cons

Pro: Prompts can express varied themes, from moods and activities to artists, lyrics and TV shows, giving listeners multiple ways to shape discovery.
Pro: Prompt editing, track refinement, regeneration and explanatory notes provide ways to correct or understand a playlist's selections.
Pro: Podcast recommendations and audiobook playlists extend the idea beyond music, although audiobook playlists remain in beta for eligible users.
Con: Playlist creation requires Premium; Free listeners can only play a shared version without personalization or prompt reuse.
Con: English-only mobile availability and beta usage limits restrict who can use it and how often, including for scheduled updates.

Alternatives

For a dedicated playlist generator, AI Playlist Generator has a free tier, Android and iOS apps, and one-time song-count purchases: 0.99 USD for 100 songs or 1.99 USD for 200 songs. It may suit someone who wants a separate generator with a stated per-playlist purchase option rather than Spotify's Premium feature.

Amazon Music is worth considering if you want a free option with ad-free music and podcasts and offline listening for All-Access Playlists included with Prime membership; it also offers a free trial and apps for Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows.

Cue the Music Man is a free alternative with 40-track playlists on iOS and macOS. Harmony is an iOS option with a free App Store plan that requires an Apple Music membership. MOODPlaylist is a free Android and web option whose site describes it as 100% free. MoodTrue offers Android, iOS and web access, with Free at 0.00 USD per month, Premium at 3.99 USD per month and Pro at 6.99 USD per month. Sonarmood is an iOS freemium alternative; its 3.99 USD one-time Pro purchase raises generation and export limits. Jam Pad is an Android freemium option.

Browse AI Music Playlist Generators for more generator options, or Music Streaming Software for streaming alternatives.

Verdict

Spotify Prompted Playlists is a sensible choice for Premium listeners who want to shape music and podcast discovery with detailed prompts and revise what Spotify creates. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of personalized generation and practical editing controls; its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the English-only mobile beta, with usage limits that also apply to scheduled refreshes.
