Overview

Founded in 2004 and based in Amsterdam, Mollie says it serves more than 250,000 businesses across Europe. Its products span checkout, payment links, recurring payments, invoicing, business accounts, capital, outbound payments, and acceptance and risk services. Ecommerce businesses, franchises, marketplaces, and SaaS companies are among its target customers.

Mollie is for organizations acting in a business capacity, not for personal, family, or household use. Businesses can work through its web app, mobile apps, or API, with online and in-person payment acceptance under the same broader offering.

Key features

Online and in-person acceptance

Mollie supports card and local payment methods, recurring payments, and marketplace payments. Its coverage spans 28 currencies and 31 payout countries, which can help businesses managing payments across borders. For in-person sales, businesses can use terminals or the Mollie Tap app; Tap to Pay works on iPhone and Android, and the app can turn a phone, tablet, or kiosk into a contactless terminal. That flexibility can avoid dedicated hardware in some settings, though a business needing fixed or mobile terminals must account for purchase and active-terminal costs.

Payouts and developer tools

Payouts can be scheduled every business day, weekly on a selected business day, or monthly on the first business day. Mollie supports payout currencies including EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, CZK, DKK, HUF, NOK, PLN, SEK, CHF, and USD, with up to 11 additional payout currencies. Developers get a customizable API, ready-made plugins, and client and server libraries for JavaScript, PHP, .NET, and Python. Integrations include Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Odoo, HubSpot, Chargebee, Jotform, QuickBooks, and Zapier, a useful range for businesses connecting payments to commerce and operations systems.

Mollie states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 and PCI-DSS Level 1 compliant, with ISAE 3402 Type 2 audited operational controls. Mollie B.V. is licensed as an electronic money institution by the Dutch Central Bank, while Mollie UK Ltd is licensed by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. Support includes a help centre, customer support, and a partnerships team for platform integrations.

Pricing

Mollie uses paid pricing, with a €0/mo entry point and a free plan. The zero-monthly-fee option is Pay as you go: 0.00 EUR per month (billed €0 per month), with no contract or commitment. It charges 1.20% for domestic consumer debit and credit cards, 1.80% for other consumer cards, 2.10% for American Express, and 2.90% for commercial cards; it allows one hardware terminal maximum. This suits businesses that want to avoid a recurring platform charge, but card volume still carries a fee and terminal capacity is limited.

Pro costs 20.00 EUR per month (billed €20 per month). Rates are 0.10 € + 0.85% for domestic consumer debit and credit cards, 0.10 € + 1.50% for other consumer cards, 0.10 € + 1.80% for American Express, and 0.10 € + 2.50% for commercial cards. One terminal license is included, with additional terminals at €20/mo each. The lower listed percentage rates may suit businesses with enough card volume to justify the monthly fee; the per-transaction €0.10 charge remains relevant, especially for smaller payments.

Business accounts costs 9.00 EUR per month (billed €9/mo), with 12 months free. It includes five accounts, unlimited incoming transfers, 100 free outgoing transfers per month, €0.20 per additional transfer, and five Mollie debit cards. This is the fit for businesses wanting account and transfer features, not merely a cheaper way to process payments; the outgoing-transfer allowance and card count are the key caps.

Online payments has custom pricing, billed per transaction: Mastercard/Visa EEA consumer cards cost 1.80% + €0.25, EEA commercial cards 2.90% + €0.25, non-EEA cards 3.25% + €0.25, SEPA Direct Debit €0.35, and SEPA Bank Transfer €0.25. These fixed charges can weigh more heavily on low-value transactions.

Hardware is separately priced. Tap terminal costs 95.00 EUR per once (billed €95) and accepts cards and wallets over 4G/Wi-Fi, with front-facing NFC and digital receipts by QR or email. Fixed terminal costs 350.00 EUR per once (billed €350), uses Ethernet, is vandal-proof, and is designed for kiosks and unattended payment setups; it starts at €20 per month per active terminal. Mobile terminal also costs 350.00 EUR per once (billed €350), and is lightweight and portable with an embedded receipt printer and fast, secure transactions; it likewise starts at €20 per month per active terminal. The upfront and ongoing costs matter most for businesses deploying several devices.

Platforms

Mollie is available on Android, iOS, web, and API. Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android gives mobile sellers a way to accept contactless payments without relying solely on a dedicated terminal.

Who it's for

Mollie is a strong fit for European and UK businesses that want one provider for online checkout, in-person payments, recurring billing, payouts, or marketplace payments. Its APIs, libraries, and integrations also make it relevant to businesses building payment flows into existing software. It is not intended for personal payments, and merchants with very low transaction values or multiple physical terminals should weigh fixed fees and hardware costs carefully.

Pros and cons

Pros: Online and in-person acceptance, recurring and marketplace payments, and payout scheduling sit within one product range, useful for businesses with mixed payment needs.
Pros: Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android can turn existing devices into contactless terminals, reducing dependence on dedicated hardware for some sellers.
Pros: A customizable API, language libraries, plugins, and integrations support both custom builds and established commerce platforms.
Cons: Card processing remains fee-based even on the €0 monthly plan, and its one-terminal maximum limits that plan for larger in-person operations.
Cons: Pro adds a monthly charge and a €0.10 per-transaction fee, so its lower percentage rates do not automatically suit lower-volume or low-ticket sellers.
Cons: Dedicated terminal options add upfront hardware charges, and fixed and mobile models also carry an active-terminal monthly charge.

Verdict

Choose Mollie if your business needs a flexible mix of online and in-person payment acceptance, scheduled payouts, and developer options under one provider. Its range and mobile acceptance are the main draw; businesses with low average transaction values or substantial terminal needs should compare the fee and hardware costs before committing.
