Overview

Retool brings app creation and workflow automation together, with deployment in Retool’s cloud or a customer’s own infrastructure. Its AI-native builder generates a working app from a description that users can refine, providing a starting point for custom software rather than a ready-made answer to every business need.

The product is most compelling when a team wants to build on its existing data and needs control over deployment. Cloud hosting keeps deployment straightforward; self-hosting in a customer’s own VPC, set up via Docker, gives teams an option to run Retool in their own infrastructure. That flexibility is useful, but the product’s breadth is most relevant to organizations prepared to build and operate their own tools.

Key features

AI-assisted app building: A description can produce a working app that users refine. This can help teams get to a first version, but the need to refine it makes the builder a starting point, not a substitute for shaping the app around real workflows.
Mobile apps: Retool supports native iOS and Android apps as well as progressive web apps. Mobile apps can use device features including photo capture, barcode scanning, signature capture, and NFC reading, which suits operational work that depends on collecting information in the field.
Workflow automation: Workflows can run on schedules or webhook triggers, with custom error handling and automatic retries. These controls make Retool relevant for recurring or event-driven processes where handling failures matters.
Data connections: Connections include REST API, Google Sheets, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Firebase, GraphQL, Snowflake, Salesforce, and Slack. Retool says queries run against customers’ own data sources and that it does not store their data, a useful fit for teams building tools around existing systems.
Access and deployment controls: Role-based access controls, audit logging, SSO, independent workspaces, and self-hosting address teams with security and deployment requirements. Audit logging and rich permission controls are included in Business, so teams needing those capabilities should account for the higher plan tier.

Pricing

Retool has a Free plan and paid plans starting at $10/mo (annual). The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes up to five users. That cap makes it suitable for a small team evaluating or building with Retool, but larger teams must move to Team, which adds users beyond the Free limit.

Team: 10.00 USD per month, billed at $10/mo per builder and $5/mo per internal user. It includes 5,000 workflow runs per month, a staging resource environment, app release versions, additional agent hours available, and 1,000 AI credits per month. This is the practical step up for teams that have outgrown the five-user Free cap and need a defined workflow allowance, though the 1,000-credit pool is a monthly ceiling rather than a carryover balance.

Business: 50.00 USD per month, billed at $50/mo per builder and $15/mo per internal user. It includes audit logging, rich permission controls, portals and embedded apps, unlimited resource environments, unlimited modules, and 3,000 AI credits per month. The higher per-user rates make it a more appropriate fit for teams that need its additional access controls, embedded experiences, or expanded environments, rather than a default upgrade for every small team.

Enterprise: custom pricing. Technical support from Retool’s Support Engineering team is listed as an Enterprise feature, making this tier relevant to organizations that need that support. Retool offers a free trial, but its length is not established here.

AI credits are pooled at the account level, renew monthly, and do not roll over; paid plans can add credit packs. AI agents are billed hourly and do not draw from the credit pool, so agent use has a separate billing basis.

Platforms

Retool supports web, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted use. It includes web apps, mobile apps, and database and backend capabilities, with both cloud and self-hosted deployment options. Custom domains are supported. This range suits teams that want to build beyond a web-only internal tool, while self-hosting is the option for those that need Retool in their own VPC.

Who it's for

Retool identifies developers, business engineers, analysts, and operations teams as builders. It is a strong fit for teams that need custom applications connected to business data, particularly when mobile workflows or scheduled and webhook-driven automation are part of the job. Teams seeking a tool that avoids custom app work, or a free plan for more than five users, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Apps can connect to a range of databases, APIs, and business services, helping teams build around data they already use.
Pro: Native mobile apps can use camera, barcode, signature, and NFC features, extending custom tools to field and operational workflows.
Pro: Cloud and self-hosted deployment give organizations a choice about where Retool runs.
Con: The Free plan stops at five users, so a growing team must budget for paid seats.
Con: Team AI credits expire at each monthly renewal rather than rolling over, which can make uneven usage less efficient.
Con: Audit logging and rich permission controls start at Business, so teams that need those capabilities face higher per-user rates than Team.

Alternatives

Noloco is worth considering for teams that prioritize a free plan with unlimited team seats; its Free plan also includes 50 active clients, 2,000 records, and 30 AI credits per month. Retool is the stronger fit when the decision turns on its listed workflow features, deployment choices, or integrations.

Zoho Creator offers a free option limited to one user and one app, with 1,000 records and 250 MB of storage. It may suit someone comfortable with those tighter free-tier limits; Retool allows up to five Free users and includes app and workflow capabilities.

Google AppSheet is an alternative for teams comparing per-user plans: its Starter costs 5.00 USD per month per user and includes five AppSheet databases and 2,500 rows per database. Retool is the better match when self-hosting or its listed workflow controls matter; AppSheet has no free trial.

Claris FileMaker is another paid app-building option with a free trial, for readers comparing platforms beyond Retool.

Quickbase offers a 30-day free trial that includes all Business Plan features, making it an option for readers who want a time-limited evaluation of that product.

DronaHQ is a paid alternative whose Starter plan costs 140.00 USD per month and includes unlimited users, apps, and connectors; it may suit teams prioritizing those allowances over Retool’s free entry point.

Kintone starts at 24.00 USD per month with a five-user minimum, or $120/month, and includes 900 apps, 300 spaces, and 5 GB storage per user. It is an option for teams comparing a paid platform with those stated capacity limits.

Softools is a paid alternative available on web, iOS, and Android.

Verdict

Choose Retool if your team needs custom apps tied to its own data, mobile workflows, automation, and a choice of cloud or self-hosted deployment. Its main advantage is bringing those capabilities together; its main trade-offs are the five-user Free cap, monthly AI credits that do not roll over, and higher Business pricing for audit logging and rich permission controls. Teams that need those controls or a broader deployment choice have a clear reason to consider it; those that need a larger free team or do not need custom-built tools should look elsewhere.
