Overview

StemDesk is a desktop audio suite for separating tracks into stems, shaping a mix with plugins, and exporting editable sessions on its Studio plan. It suits producers who want offline, local workflows alongside AI analysis; its strongest case is the breadth of its mix toolkit, while platform beta status and inconsistent pricing deserve a check before purchase.

The maker says mixing runs on the user's machine and audio is never uploaded. Mixing, separation, and plugins work offline; the EULA says no audio, projects, personal data, or telemetry are transmitted at runtime. Downloads and update checks are user-initiated, and internet is needed for downloads and an optional one-time AI model fetch. Paid licenses activate offline by key, with no account required.

Key features

Stem separation and mixing

Stem separation provides a starting point for processing individual parts rather than treating a recording as one file. Studio adds one-click Auto-Mix: it measures stems and applies per-stem processing, gain staging, panning, sidechain ducking, vocal rides, and mastering. That makes Studio the relevant tier for users seeking an automated route from separated audio to a finished mix; Free offers separation, analysis, and mix targets but not the listed Auto-Mix workflow.

Automatic EQ and dynamics are among the capabilities, with stereo spatial processing. StemDesk includes 17 plugins, though the free Compressor, Gate, and Limiter give budget-conscious users a smaller but practical set to start with.

AI and session tools

The local AI panel covers mix critique, spectral masking analysis, a session-aware coach, and vocal transcription. Optional music generation requires a separate ACE-Step installation, so it is an extra setup rather than an integrated, ready-to-run part of the suite.

Studio can build live Pro Tools sessions and export to REAPER, Ableton Live, and DAWproject. The maker also lists tested or validated compatibility with Pro Tools, REAPER, Cubase, Ableton Live, Studio One, Bitwig Studio, FL Studio, GarageBand, and Logic Pro. Session export is narrower than that compatibility list, so users should distinguish working with a DAW from exporting a session to it.

Pricing

Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes Compressor, Gate, and Limiter plugins, stem separation, analysis and mix targets, the local AI suite, and WAV, MP3, FLAC, and AAC export. It is the sensible way to use the core workflow without paying, but lacks the additional plugins and Studio automation and session-building features.

Pro costs 99.15 USD per once, billed One-time. It adds all 17 plugins, Channel Strip with Analyze Track, an AI button in every plugin, and free updates through v1.x. Pro fits users who want the full plugin set and integrated plugin controls but do not need Studio's Auto-Mix or session exports.

Studio costs 179.25 USD per once, billed One-time. It includes everything in Pro, one-click Auto-Mix, live Pro Tools session building, REAPER, Ableton, and DAWproject export, and batch album processing. It is the stronger fit for users managing complete mixes or albums, but is harder to justify if separation and manual plugin work are enough.

The general pricing note says paid plans start at $149, which conflicts with the specific Pro and Studio prices. Confirm the current offer before buying. There is no free trial; customers may request a full refund within 14 days of purchase. The maker provides email support.

Platforms

StemDesk targets Linux, macOS, and Windows. The download page specifies Windows 10/11, macOS 13+ on Apple Silicon (beta), and Linux x86_64 (beta). Windows has no beta qualifier, while Mac and Linux users should weigh beta status before relying on the software for established production workflows.

Plugin formats vary by system: VST3 and AAX on Windows, VST3 and Audio Units on macOS, and VST3 on Linux. The suite is therefore more flexible for Mac and Windows plugin users than a VST-only label suggests, while Linux users get VST3 support.

Who it's for

StemDesk is best for producers who want stem separation, local AI analysis, and offline mixing in one desktop workflow. Free suits exploration and basic separation; Pro suits plugin-focused mixing; Studio is for users who value automatic mixing, album batch processing, or editable session delivery. It is a less secure choice for anyone who needs stable non-beta Mac or Linux support or a fully specified paid offer before committing.

Pros and cons

Pro: Mixing, separation, and plugins work offline, and the maker says runtime activity does not transmit audio, projects, personal data, or telemetry.
Pro: Studio combines automated stem processing with session exports and batch album processing, useful for moving beyond a single finished audio file.
Pro: The free plan includes stem separation, local AI tools, several export formats, and three plugins, giving users substantive capabilities without a paid license.
Con: macOS on Apple Silicon and Linux downloads are beta, which makes them a less assured fit for production-critical setups.
Con: The $149 starting-price note conflicts with the $99.15 and $179.25 one-time plan prices, so buyers should verify the offer.
Con: Optional music generation depends on a separate ACE-Step installation, adding setup beyond the core application.

TonalBrain offers a one-time Starter purchase with 50 credits that never expire, one credit per analysis run, and runs of up to 24 tracks; choose it for credit-based analysis rather than StemDesk's mixing suite.

NeuroMix AI is a free web-based alternative.

EZmix 3 is a paid alternative with a free trial for Windows and macOS.

MIXaiR is a paid alternative for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Cryo Mix is a paid web alternative.

Verdict

Choose StemDesk if you want stem separation, offline local processing, and a path from analysis to automated mixing and editable sessions, especially on Windows. Its free tier makes the core workflow accessible, and Studio adds meaningful production tools. Look elsewhere if you need a clearly consistent price before checkout or cannot accept beta platform downloads.
