Overview

Middleware is an observability platform for engineering teams that want infrastructure, application, and user-experience monitoring in one place. Its breadth is the draw; teams with modest data needs should weigh that against the free tier’s 14-day retention and usage-based charges as they grow.

Its hybrid deployment model, Public API, and more than 450 built-in integrations support a broad range of monitoring environments. The catalog spans cloud, containers, databases, operating systems, networking, notifications, streaming, and telemetry, making Middleware a plausible consolidation choice for teams with varied systems.

Key features

Monitoring and investigation

Middleware covers infrastructure, logs, APM, metrics, databases, distributed and transaction tracing, real user monitoring (RUM), synthetic monitoring, browser testing, and LLM observability. Dependency mapping and log correlation add context across these signals. That range suits teams that want to investigate application and infrastructure issues across a shared platform; organizations seeking only one narrow monitoring function may find the breadth unnecessary.

Middleware’s AI SRE Agent is positioned around detecting issues and helping resolve them. Its OpsAI capabilities include root cause analysis, automatic issue detection, faster issue solving, and automatic PR generation. These functions could help teams move from identifying a problem toward remediation, but the free allocation of 2 million OpsAI tokens makes consumption worth tracking.

Security and support

Middleware says it encrypts customer data in transit with TLS 1.2+ and at rest with AES-256. It also describes regular penetration testing and vulnerability assessments, alongside firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, and traffic filtering. The Free Forever plan has community-based support, while BYOC includes 24x7 support and a dedicated account team—an important distinction for organizations that need a defined support relationship.

Pricing

Middleware has a free tier, usage-based paid pricing, and a BYOC plan with custom pricing. Its 14-day trial gives prospective customers a limited period to evaluate paid usage before settling into a plan.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free Forever	0.00 USD per free	Up to 100GB of data, 1k RUM sessions, 20k synthetic checks, 10 browser test runs, 2 million OpsAI tokens, unlimited users, community-based support, and 14-day retention.
Pay As You Go	0.30 USD per month	Pay only for what you use, with $1 per 1K RUM sessions, $1 per 5K synthetic checks, and $10 per 1K browser test runs. It includes default 30-day retention, SSO and security features, and a dedicated Slack or MS Teams channel.
BYOC	Custom pricing	Bring your own cloud, volume and multi-year contract discounts, custom data retention, a dedicated account team, and 24x7 support.

The Free Forever tier is a useful starting point for teams that can stay within its data and test quotas, but 14-day retention may be limiting for investigations that need a longer history. Pay As You Go extends default retention to 30 days and adds SSO, security features, and a dedicated team channel; variable usage charges mean session, check, and browser-test volumes affect the bill. Accounts can be cancelled anytime, and data remains available for download for 30 days after cancellation. BYOC is aimed at organizations that need their own cloud environment, tailored retention, or stronger support, with custom pricing rather than a published rate.

Platforms

Middleware supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, and web, and also lists API support. Its hybrid deployment model accommodates teams looking for a combination of deployment approaches.

Who it's for

Middleware is best suited to engineering and operations teams that need monitoring across infrastructure, applications, and real-user activity, particularly when many integrations matter. Smaller teams can begin on the free tier, but should watch quotas and decide whether 14 days of retention is enough. Teams that need extended retention, usage-based capacity, or dedicated support have paid and BYOC paths; buyers with a narrow use case or strict predictable-cost requirements may prefer a more focused or fixed-scope option.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad coverage from infrastructure and logs to RUM, browser testing, and LLM observability can reduce the need to assemble separate monitoring tools.
Pro: More than 450 built-in integrations and a Public API give teams multiple ways to connect Middleware with their environment.
Pro: The free tier permits unlimited users and includes meaningful data, session, and synthetic-check allowances for evaluation or smaller deployments.
Con: Free retention is only 14 days, which can constrain investigations requiring a longer history.
Con: Pay As You Go charges separately by RUM sessions, synthetic checks, and browser-test runs, so costs depend on usage rather than a single fixed allowance.
Con: Free-tier support is community-based; organizations needing 24x7 support and a dedicated account team must consider BYOC.

Alternatives

SigNoz is worth considering for teams that prefer self-hosting and can manage their own infrastructure, storage, scaling, upgrades, and backups on its free community plan.
ManageEngine Applications Manager may suit teams with a smaller monitoring scope: its free plan covers up to 5 apps or servers.
Honeycomb is an option for teams whose needs align with its free allowances of up to 20M events per month, 100M metrics data points per month, and 2 triggers.
Dynatrace Application Monitoring is a paid alternative for teams willing to pay $58.00 USD per month for its Full-Stack Monitoring plan, priced per 8 GiB host.
Apache SkyWalking is a free, self-hosted observability alternative.
groundcover may fit teams seeking a free plan with 12-hour data retention and BYOC.
Uptrace is another option for teams whose usage fits its 50 GB free monthly allowance, after which it charges $0.075 per GB.
New Relic Session Replay is relevant for teams focused on session replay, with its free plan including 100 GB of data ingest per month and one free full platform user.

Verdict

Middleware is a strong fit for teams that want broad observability coverage, a large integration catalog, and a free entry point with unlimited users. Its main trade-offs are short free-tier retention and usage-based charges that require attention as traffic and testing grow. Choose it when one platform spanning infrastructure, applications, and user monitoring matters more than a fixed, predictable price; look elsewhere for a narrow tool or longer free retention.
