Overview

The app brings a 3D voxel editor and a 2D pixel art editor together, with Pencil, Bucket Fill, and Magic Wand tools. That pairing suits people who alternate between making models and pixel graphics; someone committed to only one medium may not need the breadth. A library of more than 450 voxel models offers starting points, while the 256×256×256 model ceiling sets a firm scale limit.

MagicaVoxel VOX support and OBJ export provide routes into workflows involving Unity and Blender. Scene editing and texture painting add scope to asset creation, and users can create and save video animations or view designs in augmented reality. These tools make Mega Voxels more versatile than a simple model editor, but its mobile-only platform reach may not suit a desktop-centered workflow.

Key features

Two editors: The voxel and pixel art editors make one app useful across 3D and 2D work. The trade-off is that its maximum model dimensions still limit larger assets.
Library and model scale: More than 450 voxel models can help users get started or build on existing material. Models can reach 256×256×256, a defined ceiling for projects that need more room.
Export and animation: VOX support, OBJ export, game engine export, and saved video animations help carry work beyond the editor. The maker describes OBJ exports for tools such as Unity and Blender.
Augmented reality: Viewing designs in AR gives creators a way to see their work in that context, alongside the app's scene-editing and texture-painting tools.

Pricing

Mega Voxels is freemium, with a free app download and free content licenses issued at no cost. The free plan is the sensible starting point for learning the editors or working with free content; it does not include the premium content licenses bundled with subscriptions.

Weekly Premium is 1.99 USD per month, Monthly Premium is 4.99 USD per month, and Yearly Premium is 49.99 USD per year. Each includes premium content licenses while the subscription is valid. The weekly plan may suit short-term access, while the monthly and yearly options are for longer subscription periods; compare their stated billing terms before choosing. In every tier, a premium content license covers one design only. Premium content cannot be copied, downloaded, or distributed as a standalone item, so creators who need to reuse or share source content should not assume a subscription grants those rights.

Platforms

Mega Voxels runs on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. That makes it relevant to mobile-first creators, but not to people seeking a desktop version.

Who it's for

The app suits artists, gamers, and beginners who want mobile tools for both voxel and pixel art, plus animation and export options. It is a less natural choice for creators whose projects exceed the model limit, depend on standalone distribution of premium content, or require desktop software.

Pros and cons

Pro: Two editors, scene editing, and texture painting cover different kinds of mobile art work in one app.
Pro: VOX support, OBJ export, game engine export, and saved video animations offer several ways to use or present creations beyond the editor.
Pro: The free app and no-cost free content licenses provide a way to begin without a subscription.
Con: The 256×256×256 model cap rules it out for work that needs larger models.
Con: Premium licenses apply to one design and bar standalone copying, downloading, or distribution of premium content.
Con: iOS and Android are the supported platforms, leaving desktop users without a version.

Alternatives

Voxel Editors is a useful place to compare more tools in the category. Choose Goxel if a free desktop version and a scene size described as unlimited matter more than Mega Voxels' paired mobile editors; it also supports Android and iOS, with its iOS price unstated. Voxel Builder is another free option for Android, iOS, Linux, web, and Windows.

Voxel Max may suit iOS and macOS users seeking a 256 × 256 × 256 workspace in a paid app without a free plan. Blockhammer is a free early-access editor for macOS, Windows, and Linux if desktop use is the priority. Facet offers a web and Windows route: its free demo saves and reloads JSON projects, while the full version adds one-click OBJ export.

pixemboss is a free in-browser editor that needs no install or account to start. Roxel is a free Windows and macOS download with a name-your-own-price model. The Sandbox Game Maker is free for personal, educational, and commercial projects on macOS and Windows, though publishing to virtual LAND requires LAND ownership.

Verdict

Mega Voxels is a strong match for mobile creators who want voxel and pixel editing together, with exports, animation, and AR in the same app. Start with its free plan if free content is enough; choose a subscription only if its premium content fits a one-design license. Look elsewhere if your work needs models beyond 256×256×256, standalone premium-asset distribution, or desktop support.
