Overview

MAXQDA supports literature reviews, content analysis, and analysis of interviews, questionnaires, and focus groups. Alongside qualitative and mixed methods work, MAXDictio provides quantitative text analysis, while Analytics Pro adds statistical analysis. That range is useful for projects that need several research methods in one desktop environment; buyers focused on a narrower task may not need the added scope or its associated license.

Its document-based analysis includes sentiment and topic analysis, but not entity extraction or intent detection. MAXQDA is an on-premise product distributed by VERBI GmbH, which has focused on qualitative data analysis since 1989.

Key features

Text and statistical analysis

MAXDictio extends the core qualitative and mixed methods toolkit with quantitative text analysis. For researchers who also need statistical work, Analytics Pro can import and connect Excel or SPSS data sets. It includes descriptive statistics, crosstabs, ANOVA, independent-samples t-tests, cluster analysis, Pearson and Spearman correlations, and scale calculations. This makes Analytics Pro the more suitable option when a project needs both interpretation and statistical analysis; the standard MAXQDA license does not include that statistical package.

Transcription and collaboration

MAXQDA Transcription automatically transcribes audio and video in more than 50 languages and can be used without a MAXQDA license. Analyzing those transcripts in MAXQDA does require a valid MAXQDA or Analytics Pro license, so transcription alone does not provide a licensed analysis workflow.

TeamCloud adds a protected cloud workspace with 25GB of storage and a license allocation of one team lead plus up to four team members. That is a defined collaboration setup for small teams, not an unlimited seat pool. AI Assist comes in Free and Premium options, but both have limited capacity; unusually high or automated usage may be capacity-controlled, so it is not a dependable choice for unbounded prompt workloads.

Pricing

MAXQDA is paid software with a 14-day free trial for Windows and Mac. The trial gives prospective users a short evaluation period, but there is no free MAXQDA plan. The MAXQDA and Analytics Pro licenses offer annual subscriptions, 3-year licenses, or 5-year licenses, for 1 to 20 licenses; larger purchases require a personalized quote. Their prices are custom pricing, so the longer license terms cannot be compared on upfront cost here.

Analytics Pro is the better fit for researchers who need the listed statistical tools and Excel or SPSS data connections. Choosing standard MAXQDA instead gives up those statistical capabilities. MAXQDA Transcription can be used without either license, but analyzing its transcripts requires one of them.

AI Assist Free costs 0.00 USD per free and is intended for occasional use with single prompts and limited capacity. AI Assist Premium is offered for 6 months or 12 months, with frequent prompts and limited capacity for extensive use; both have custom pricing. TeamCloud is also custom pricing on an annual subscription. Its 25GB storage and five-person allocation per license are the practical constraints to weigh when planning a team workflow.

Platforms

The desktop product runs on Windows and Mac, with an identical interface and functions on both systems. The maker also provides online support, tutorials, guides, webinars, workshops, courses, and a live product demo, giving new users several ways to learn the software and get help.

Who it's for

MAXQDA is a strong fit for researchers whose document-based work spans qualitative or mixed methods analysis, and for those who want quantitative text analysis alongside it. Analytics Pro is the more relevant choice when statistical analysis or connected Excel and SPSS data sets are part of the project. TeamCloud suits teams that can work within one lead and up to four members per license. Readers seeking a free, permanent desktop analysis option or broad AI prompt capacity should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: Qualitative, mixed methods, and quantitative text analysis sit within one desktop product, which suits projects that move between those approaches.
Pro: Analytics Pro connects Excel and SPSS data sets and includes a substantial set of statistical methods for research that needs more than text interpretation.
Pro: Transcription works in more than 50 languages and does not itself require a MAXQDA license.
Con: Transcript analysis does require a valid MAXQDA or Analytics Pro license, so transcription and analysis are not covered by the transcription tool alone.
Con: There is no free MAXQDA plan, and license prices are custom pricing, making the cost harder to assess before purchase.
Con: AI Assist capacity is limited, including for Premium use, which makes it a poor fit for workloads that need unrestricted or automated prompting.
Con: TeamCloud is scoped to 25GB and one lead plus four members per license, which may constrain larger teams.

Alternatives

For a low-cost student option with live collaboration, Quirkos offers a student cloud plan at 5.00 USD per month, billed paid annually, with unlimited cloud storage and project sharing. Choose spaCy instead if a free tool with a free plan and Linux, macOS, self-hosted, or Windows deployment better suits your needs. Dovetail has a free plan at 0.00 USD per user/month with one channel, one project, basic chat, and AI summaries; it may suit readers who want a free starting point within those limits.

KH Coder offers a free Windows Starting Edition with limited analysis data and features, plus an older beta version, and a 99.00 USD per once Mac Edition for Apple silicon. CATMA is a free option with no listed project or collaboration count limit, though it is not designed for massive quantitative or statistical text analysis. QualCoder is free, open-source qualitative analysis software; its optional AI features may require separate provider accounts or paid usage.

Taguette is free to use on a computer, on a server, or through its hosted server. TextAnalyzer is a free web-based alternative with NLP tools for researchers. Readers comparing adjacent categories can also browse Text Analytics Software, Academic Research Databases, and Video Annotation Software.

Verdict

Choose MAXQDA if your research needs a broad document-based toolkit for qualitative and mixed methods analysis, with a path to quantitative text analysis, statistics, transcription, and small-team collaboration. Its main advantage is that breadth; its main drawback is that statistics, transcript analysis, collaboration, and AI capacity each come with license or usage conditions. If a free plan or unmetered AI use matters more than an integrated desktop research workflow, look elsewhere.
