Overview

Perplexity is an AI search and research service for people who want concise answers grounded in web sources, with the option to search their own files and connected apps. It suits curious readers and research-heavy professionals best; its chief appeal is the citations, while its free use is better suited to simpler questions than sustained work.

Key features

Answers you can follow up

Perplexity searches the open web in real time and places citations alongside every answer, giving readers a route back to the claims rather than asking them to trust an unsupported summary. It can draw on more than 20 leading models, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Nemotron. That breadth is useful when model choice matters, though the service's approach is to orchestrate models within Perplexity rather than provide API access as part of its paid subscriptions.

Research and connected information

Deep Research runs dozens of searches across hundreds of sources and produces a report, a more substantial workflow than a quick answer. Unified search reaches the open web, files, and connected apps, which can make Perplexity useful for work spanning public and personal information. The comparison states that more than 400 app connectors can be connected. Connector security includes SOC 2, encryption, continuous monitoring, point-in-time backups, and 30-day retention.

Pro adds Computer, premium data sources, web search, files, apps, model council, and model selection. Max raises Deep Research, resource-generation, and file-upload limits and allows more monthly video creation. Computer credits are a meaningful part of the tiers: Pro includes 4,000 additional monthly credits; Max includes 35,000 additional credits and 10,000 credits per month. Personal Computer runs inside the macOS app and requires macOS 15 or later.

Security and administration

Perplexity states that it has SOC 2 Type 2 certification, GDPR-aligned and HIPAA-aligned safeguards, and PCI compliance. Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max do not use customer data to train AI models and offer SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and data-retention controls. Admins can manage members, billing, and seat counts; seats in one organization are consolidated on one invoice. These controls make the enterprise tiers more relevant to organizations than individual plans, though API use requires separate credits.

Pricing

Perplexity is freemium. The Free plan is 0.00 USD per free and provides limited daily use for individuals; free usage is also limited weekly and suited to simple questions. It is a sensible starting point, not a strong fit for people who need dependable high-volume research.

Pro: 20.00 USD per month (billed $20 /mes). It is aimed at serious work, with expanded access, higher limits, Pro features, and 4,000 additional Computer credits. Choose it for regular individual research; it does not include the highest limits of Max.
Max: 200.00 USD per month (billed $200 /mes). It provides maximum Computer use and the highest usage limits, including 35,000 additional Computer credits and 10,000 Computer credits per month. It is designed for professionals, content creators and writers, business strategists, academic researchers, and power users; the steep price is hard to justify for occasional questions.
Education Pro: custom pricing. Verified students and educators get Pro features, Learn Mode, file and image uploads, and premium models.
Enterprise Pro: 40.00 USD per month (billed $40 per seat per month). It includes 400 Pro Searches per week and 100 file uploads per week.
Enterprise Max: 325.00 USD per month (billed $325 per seat per month). It includes 4,000 Pro Searches per week, 800 Browser Agent queries per month, 1,000 file uploads per week, 10,000 personal files, and 5,000 files per project. It also supports 15 monthly video generations.

Enterprise plans bill per seat on monthly or yearly subscriptions, with seats consolidated into one organizational invoice. Self-serve trials are not offered for Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max. Major credit cards, invoice, and wire transfer are available in checkout. API usage is separate and requires credits; Max's advanced model access applies within Perplexity web, not programmatic API access. Max subscribers receive priority support with dedicated infrastructure and faster response times. Accidental purchases can be handled by contacting support under the refund policy.

Platforms

Perplexity is available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and the web, and API access is also listed. Its Comet app is available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. The separate macOS Computer feature requires macOS 15 or later.

Who it's for

Perplexity is strongest for people who want cited web answers and a way to combine public search with files or connected apps. Deep Research and the higher usage allowances make Max more appropriate for sustained professional or academic research, content work, and strategy. People who ask only occasional straightforward questions can start free; users who need programmatic access should account for separate API credits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Inline citations give readers a direct way to trace answer claims to their origins.
Pros: Web, file, and connected-app search in one place suits questions that span public and personal information.
Pros: Deep Research can turn many searches into a report, while model choice offers a broader search approach.
Cons: Free use is limited and aimed at simple questions, so regular research pushes users toward a paid tier.
Cons: Max costs 200.00 USD per month, a substantial step up from Pro for users who do not need its higher limits.
Cons: API use is not included with Pro or Max and requires separate credits, limiting the appeal for developers seeking bundled programmatic access.

Alternatives

For readers choosing an email-focused tool instead, AI Email Assistants and AI Search Engines are useful category starting points; AI Research Assistants and AI chatbots and assistants cover adjacent needs.

Mailbutler Smart Assistant is a freemium alternative with a free plan and support across mobile, desktop, web, and browser extension platforms. Spark +AI is another freemium option; its free tier includes Smart Inbox, unlimited email accounts, smart notifications, and calendar. Spike may suit small teams seeking email and teamspace features, with a free Starter plan for three members and one teamspace.

Superhuman Go offers a free tier with inline suggestions, chat with tabs and apps, editable shareable docs, and synced conversations. Mailtwine is an alternative for readers interested in email software with free beta access and all features included during beta. Shortwave is an email-focused option with a Business plan at 30.00 USD per month per seat. Inbox Zero is open source and can be self-hosted. Maylee is a paid email option with a Premium plan at 17.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Perplexity is a strong choice for readers who want cited, real-time web answers and a path from quick searches to file, app, and deeper research workflows. Start with Free for simple questions, or choose Pro for regular work; Max makes sense only when its substantially higher limits and Computer allowance will be used. Look elsewhere if you need API access included in the subscription or primarily want an email assistant.
