Overview

Seventeen subject libraries and more than 2,000 textbooks give instructors a broad base of material to adapt. Chapters can be remixed into custom books, and downloads in PDF, EPUB, and editable formats support offline reading and further editing. That flexibility makes LibreTexts a practical fit for courses built around open educational resources (OER), though it is less compelling for readers seeking a conventional storefront for buying commercial textbooks.

LibreTexts combines textbook content with authoring, assessment, and course-delivery tools. Individual educators can create, adapt, and host OER without charge, and LibreNet membership is open to K–12 and higher education institutions. The free core platform allows up to five custom textbooks per institution, a meaningful limit for campuses with broader customization needs.

Key features

Assessment and interactive material

ADAPT supports formative and summative assessment, with a shared bank of more than 240,000 openly licensed question elements. Instructors can add practice and evaluation to course materials rather than relying on reading alone. Textbook pages can also embed Jupyter Notebooks, ADAPT questions, 3D visualizations, and videos, which suits courses that benefit from interactive or computational material.

Course delivery and access

LibreTexts says its platform and homework services can be embedded in institutional learning management systems over a secure connection, with optional grade and assessment exchange. Its guide describes importing books into Canvas, Moodle, and D2L through IMS Common Cartridge 1.1, and also mentions Blackboard support. This gives institutions several routes to incorporate materials into existing courses, though the specific integration approach depends on the LMS.

Books may include PDF, EPUB, and editable downloads. Annotation tools, read-aloud support, and offline access can help learners use material beyond a live course site. LibreTexts states a goal of meeting or exceeding Revised Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA standards and audits accessibility at major development milestones.

Privacy and support

Users may sign in through an educational institution's Google Workspace or Microsoft Active Directory; those services share only the user's email with LibreTexts. LibreTexts says it does not accept advertising or sell, rent, or lease user lists. Its privacy policy describes collecting information users voluntarily provide and anonymous Google Analytics demographics. It also cautions that safeguards cannot guarantee protection from unauthorized disclosure, a limitation institutions should weigh when evaluating sensitive use.

Free support tickets, monthly webinars, weekly office hours, and Academy lessons give instructors several ways to get help and build familiarity with the platform.

Pricing

The core platform is free and includes textbook access, instructor ADAPT access, general-use textbooks, and free H5P and ADAPT authoring. Its cap of five custom textbooks per institution is the main constraint for institutions seeking more extensive customization.

ADAPT, The Forge, and Jupyter Hub each show a free option and a paid rate of $15 per student per 6 months, with unlimited courses. ADAPT adds homework assessment; The Forge provides a writing platform with a word processor, slide decks, spreadsheets, and process analytics; Jupyter Hub provides collaborative notebooks for coding courses. The paid rates are per student, so costs rise with enrollment. California institutions receive ADAPT free.

All-Access also shows a free option and costs $30 per student per 6 months for unlimited courses, combining ADAPT Homework, Jupyter Hub, and The Forge. It suits courses needing that full set of services; those needing just one service can choose a lower-cost option.

LibreNet Consortium (affiliate) costs $1,250 per year per campus and is available only to campuses or systems with full membership. Full membership costs $2,500 per year and includes unlimited custom textbooks at an institution, early access to new technologies, a branded Campus Commons page, and two Academy Online training seats. These campus plans are aimed at institutions investing in broader coordination rather than individual educators.

Platforms

LibreTexts is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Its LMS embedding and import options are relevant for institutions delivering courses through Canvas, Moodle, D2L, or Blackboard.

Who it's for

LibreTexts is a strong choice for educators who want to adapt open textbooks, build custom course materials, and connect reading with assessment. Institutions can use it to coordinate OER and LMS delivery, while individual educators can create and host materials without charge. It is a weaker fit for campuses that need more than five custom textbooks but do not want a paid membership, or for teams whose student needs extend beyond the free core and whose budgets cannot absorb per-student service charges.

Pros and cons

Pros: A large, remixable library gives instructors a substantial OER starting point instead of requiring them to create every text from scratch.
Pros: ADAPT's openly licensed question bank and interactive page elements can tie course reading to practice, assessment, and coding activities.
Pros: Free individual educator access, offline downloads, and multiple LMS options support different teaching and study workflows.
Cons: The free core limits each institution to five custom textbooks, which can restrict broader campus adoption.
Cons: Paid student services carry per-student charges, while expanded LibreNet membership adds annual campus costs.
Cons: LibreTexts acknowledges it cannot guarantee protection against unauthorized disclosure, so institutions should consider that caveat in privacy decisions.

Alternatives

For a free alternative built on MIT-licensed open-source technology, consider DIKSHA, which is available on Android, iOS, and the web. ePathshala is another free service, with Android, iOS, web, and Windows support. Choose VitalSource Bookshelf if you want an eTextbook reader across mobile and desktop platforms; the app is free to install, but eTextbook content may require purchase or an active license, and the plan allows up to two computers and two mobile devices.

Kortext may suit institutions seeking a study platform with pricing tailored to their needs and budget. Opiq offers a freemium option and a Päevikupakett at 1.00 EUR per month per student per work, with a €15 minimum order. BibliU is an alternative for institutions using a flat fee per student per text, with charges for course sections using content. For a paid teaching platform with student access sold by term or year, consider Top Hat; its plans include a 1 Term option at 35.00 USD per month and a 1 Year option at 58.00 USD per month. Cambridge Aspire is another alternative.

Verdict

Choose LibreTexts if you are an educator or institution building courses from open, adaptable textbooks and want assessment and interactive content alongside them. Its broad library, free individual educator tools, and LMS options make it a compelling foundation for OER-led teaching. Look elsewhere if your institution needs unrestricted custom-textbook capacity without a membership cost, or if the stated privacy limitation is unacceptable.
