Overview

Lark brings day-to-day communication and shared work together: teams can chat, schedule events, create documents, and store files in the same platform. During meetings, participants can edit shared Docs in the call window, a useful way to keep discussion and the work under review together. Starter limits video calls to one-on-one, so teams that rely on group meetings need a higher tier.

The platform also extends into workflow and software development. AnyCross offers drag-and-drop automation, integrations, and ready-to-use solutions. The App Directory covers third-party tools for areas such as recruitment, expense control, CRM, and ERP. Lark Open Platform supports custom bots, web apps, blocks, and more than 2,500 APIs. These tools give teams ways to connect and extend their work, but may be more scope than a team seeking only basic chat needs.

Key features

Communication and collaboration

Chat, calendar, document creation, and cloud storage share one platform. Editing Docs during calls can make collaborative review more immediate, though the Starter plan's one-on-one meeting limit rules it out for teams that need group calls.

Automation and extension

AnyCross combines visual workflow automation with integrations and ready-to-use solutions. Its monthly automation allowance ranges from 1,000 on Starter and Basic to 50,000 on Pro and 500,000 on Enterprise. The App Directory and Open Platform add integration and development options; they are most useful to teams with processes or applications to connect.

Translation, security, and support

Starter includes unlimited real-time translation, a notable capability for teams communicating across languages. Lark says it uses industry-standard encryption, continuously monitors systems, and gives employees no default access to user data. It also says its data compliance systems cover EU GDPR, US CCPA/CPRA, Japan APPI, and Singapore PDPA. Customer terms provide weekday help-desk email support from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Singapore Time, with an intended initial response within one business day.

Pricing

Lark has a free plan and four tiers, each with custom pricing. Starter is aimed at small teams with simple communication needs: it supports 20 users, 100 GB of storage, 18 months of message history, and 1,000 automations per month. Its one-on-one meeting cap and smaller user and storage allowances make it a limited starting point for growing teams.

Basic raises capacity to 500 users and 5 TB of storage, provides unlimited message history, and retains a 1,000-automation monthly allowance. It suits teams that need room for more people and a permanent message archive but do not need Pro's higher automation quota or meeting capacity.

Pro supports 500 users, 15 TB of storage, meetings with up to 500 participants, and 50,000 automations per month. It is the stronger fit for organizations that need large meetings or substantially more workflow automation. Enterprise is intended for large companies with advanced security and organizational management needs; it supports unlimited users, 15 TB plus 30 GB per user, meetings of up to 500 participants, and 500,000 automations per month.

Across the tiers, the trade-offs are tangible: Starter's user, storage, history, and meeting limits contrast with Basic's unlimited history and higher capacity; Pro and Enterprise sharply increase meeting and automation headroom. Teams should weigh those allowances against their needs before choosing a custom-priced plan.

Platforms

Lark supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, and the web. Its platform list also includes API access, relevant to teams extending the service through developer tools.

Who it's for

Lark is a good fit for teams that want communication and shared documents alongside calendar, storage, automation, and integration options. Starter can serve a small team with modest capacity needs, while larger organizations can move to tiers with more users, storage, group-meeting capacity, and automation. Teams that only need chat, or that need group video meetings within the Starter tier, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros

Chat, calendar, document creation, and cloud storage are combined, reducing the need to separate those collaboration tasks across tools.
Shared Docs can be edited during meetings, keeping document work alongside the conversation.
AnyCross, the App Directory, and Open Platform offer automation, third-party integrations, and custom development options.
Starter includes unlimited real-time translation, even though the plan is aimed at small teams.

Cons

Starter is capped at 20 users, 100 GB, 18 months of message history, and one-on-one meetings, so it may not scale to teams needing group calls or more capacity.
Basic increases users and storage and removes the message-history limit, but still allows only 1,000 automations per month.
Higher meeting and automation limits require Pro or Enterprise, whose prices are custom.
Email support is limited to weekday Singapore business hours, with an intended initial response within one business day.

Alternatives

For a narrower document or collaboration focus, consider Dropbox Paper, Superhuman Docs, AppFlowy, ContactOffice, Craft, Nuclino, ONLYOFFICE Docs, and WPS Docs. Dropbox Paper's free plan includes 2 GB of storage, while its Basic Extra tier costs 0.99 USD per month when billed yearly for 50 GB and three devices. Superhuman Docs offers a free plan with shared documents limited to 50 objects and 1,000 table rows per document, alongside personal documents without size or object limits; its Pro plan is 12.00 USD per month. ContactOffice's free plan includes a 500 MB mailbox, 500 MB of documents, 200 address book entries, and no SMS allowance. Craft's free plan includes 1,500 blocks, 1 GB of storage, a 25 MB media upload limit, seven days of version history, and 15 AI assistant credits. Nuclino's free plan supports up to 50 items, three canvases, and 2 GB of storage. ONLYOFFICE Docs Community is free, recommends up to 20 users, and provides community support under GNU AGPL v.3. WPS Standard is free and includes 1 GB of cloud space, limited template downloads, basic PDF features, and support for 47 file formats. AppFlowy offers a free plan and supports Android, API, iOS, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows access.

Use the Collaborative Document Software, No-Code Database Software, Calendar apps, Document Collaboration Software, Knowledge Management Software, or Team chat apps lists to compare tools by category.

Verdict

Choose Lark if your team wants a single workplace platform that spans communication, shared documents, automation, and developer extensions. Its strongest reason to choose it is that breadth, including document editing inside meetings and substantial automation headroom on higher tiers. Look elsewhere if you need only a simple chat tool, or if Starter's user, storage, history, and one-on-one meeting limits are too restrictive.
