Overview

PaddleOCR goes beyond recognizing printed text: it includes handwriting recognition, document-structure parsing and information extraction from document collections. Models are usable online through the official website or via API, and the open license permits use, modification, distribution and sale without restriction. That flexibility makes it practical to adapt into a product or internal pipeline rather than limiting it to a single application.

Its deployment documentation spans local installations, C++, services, Android, iOS, browsers and other options. The project also offers MCP and Skills services, including official Agent Skills, and supports Kunlunxin, Ascend and other domestic hardware. GitHub Issues is a support channel; OCR courses are available through AIStudio. Its models are also used by open-source projects including Umi-OCR, OmniParser, MinerU and RAGFlow, while PaddleOCR OCEAN brings together OCR and document-intelligence partners.

Key features

Multilingual recognition and parsing: PaddleOCR-VL supports document parsing in 109 languages, while PP-OCRv6 handles 50 languages in one model. These capabilities suit multilingual workflows, though the language counts apply to different components.
Handwriting recognition: PaddleOCR 3.0 supports handwriting OCR, extending its reach beyond printed material. No accuracy figures are given, so teams with demanding handwriting requirements should validate the results for their documents.
Structured document output: PP-StructureV3 converts complex PDFs and document images to Markdown and JSON while preserving structure. Table extraction is supported too, which is useful when downstream systems need more than a plain text transcript.
Collection-level extraction: PP-ChatOCRv4 extracts key information from large document collections and integrates ERNIE 4.5. This gives teams a route to extract targeted information rather than building solely around page-by-page text recognition.
Integration and processing: API access, asynchronous processing and Python, TypeScript and Go SDKs support application workflows. Local, service, mobile and browser deployment choices broaden where the software can fit, but the 2.x-to-3.x compatibility warning matters when adapting existing code.

Pricing

PaddleOCR is free, with an open license that allows commercial use and modification. The Official API Free Tier has custom pricing and permits up to 20,000 pages of document parsing per day. That daily ceiling is substantial for prototyping or moderate-volume workflows, but teams should distinguish it from the separate 20,000-page monthly limit and plan around whichever quota applies to their API use.

There are no paid plan prices or seat terms to compare. Readers who want to avoid a hosted API can use the models locally, with deployment documentation covering local and service options; this flexibility does not remove the need to check version compatibility when upgrading older integrations.

Platforms

PaddleOCR supports Android and iOS, and its documentation also covers browser, C++, local and service deployments. The models can be accessed through the official website or an API. This range is a strong fit for developers building across environments, rather than users looking for a conventional desktop scanning app.

Who it's for

Choose PaddleOCR if you need multilingual OCR, structured PDF or image parsing, handwriting recognition, or a permissively licensed foundation for a document-processing product. It is particularly well suited to teams that value deployment flexibility and can manage integrations themselves. It is less appropriate for someone seeking a finished, simple scanning application or a guaranteed drop-in upgrade from 2.x code.

Pros and cons

Pro: The unrestricted license allows use, modification, distribution and sale, giving product teams room to build and ship their own workflows.
Pro: Parsing, table extraction and handwriting recognition cover needs beyond basic printed-text OCR.
Pro: Online, API and varied deployment options let teams choose how to integrate the models.
Con: Code written for PaddleOCR 2.x may not run on 3.x, creating migration work for existing users.
Con: The API's daily and monthly page limits should be checked against the intended workload; the stated free tier is not an unlimited hosted service.

Alternatives

Tesseract OCR is worth considering for free OCR across Linux, Windows, macOS and Android if those platforms better match your deployment needs.

Prizmo is an iOS and macOS freemium alternative, with paid options for unlimited on-device OCR and cloud OCR with handwriting recognition.

ABBYY FineReader PDF is a paid choice for readers seeking an iOS, macOS or Windows PDF product; its plans include a standalone license, with the Corporate plan also specifying 5,000 pages per month.

OCRmyPDF suits readers who want free, self-hosted software for Linux, macOS or Windows, and are comfortable relying on external OCR and PDF tools.

i2OCR is a web-based freemium option for occasional work, processing one image or PDF page at a time on its free plan.

FreeOCR.AI is another freemium API and web option; its Monthly Pro plan costs 10.00 USD per month for 10,000 credits, while Yearly Pro costs 80.00 USD per year for 120,000 credits.

ABBYY Screenshot Reader is a paid Windows option for screen-area capture and OCR, with a perpetual license priced at 9.99 USD once and a free trial available for download.

Scribe OCR is another free option for readers considering self-hosted or web-based OCR.

Verdict

PaddleOCR is a strong choice for developers and teams that need free, permissively licensed OCR with document parsing and adaptable deployment options. Its main reason to choose is the combination of multilingual recognition, structured extraction and flexible integration; look elsewhere for a ready-made scanning app or if the 2.x-to-3.x compatibility break makes migration impractical.
