Overview

Kotrin brings speaking, listening, reading, and writing together in lessons organized around JLPT levels. Its library spans more than 5,000 advertised lessons from beginner to advanced, offering a defined progression for learners who want more than standalone conversation drills. Everyday situations such as shopping, cafés, and small talk give practice a useful context.

Literacy coverage runs from hiragana through all Jōyō kanji, with stroke-order and recognition exercises. That makes Kotrin a stronger fit for learners building reading and writing alongside conversation than for someone seeking only speaking practice. Instruction is currently in English, so learners who need another teaching language should look elsewhere.

Key features

Adaptive study and conversation

Kotrin builds a learner profile across 1,536 dimensions and uses it to adjust difficulty, content emphasis, and scenarios. This approach aims to keep practice aligned with progress; learners who prefer to set every step of a fixed syllabus may find the personalization less compelling. AI role plays create back-and-forth conversation practice, while pronunciation feedback addresses spoken output rather than leaving learners with dialogue alone.

Personalized lesson creation

The AI-powered teacher CMS can create personalized Japanese lessons from a word or idea. That may help teachers shape material around a specific learning need, while the core app’s JLPT-aligned library serves learners who want a broader sequence. The range of formats is a strength, but the English-only interface remains a practical constraint.

Pricing

Kotrin has a free plan and several paid options. Free costs 0.00 JPY per free and includes selected lessons, personalized learning, quizzes, and vocabulary practice. Daily practice limits mean it is best for sampling the approach or keeping up a modest routine, not unrestricted study.

Pro monthly (Terms) costs 10.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with tax excluded; it auto-renews unless cancelled. Pro yearly costs 90.00 USD per year, billed yearly, also excluding tax and auto-renewing unless cancelled. The terms identify monthly and yearly purchases as non-refundable, with refund handling through the App Store or Google Play. Pro costs 1650.00 JPY per month, billed monthly, and includes all lessons, unlimited practice, and advanced conversation practice. The USD subscriptions and JPY Pro option are distinct published plans; compare their stated inclusions and renewal terms before choosing.

Subscriptions are processed through Apple App Store and Google Play in-app purchases. Kotrin says it does not sell data or use it for advertising, and does not store or process payment details. Its privacy policy describes industry-standard technical and organizational safeguards and says data may be processed internationally.

Platforms

Kotrin supports iOS, Android, and macOS. Windows is also named among its platforms, though it is not included in the supported-platform list. That discrepancy makes the mobile and Mac support clearer than the Windows option.

Who it's for

Kotrin is most compelling for learners who want JLPT-oriented progression, broad kana and kanji practice, and contextual speaking work in one app. The free plan can help evaluate that mix, but its daily limits make a paid plan more relevant for sustained practice. Learners who need instruction in a language other than English, or who want only conversation drills, may be better served elsewhere. Support is available by email at hey@kotrin.jp.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 5,000 beginner-to-advanced JLPT-aligned lessons and coverage from hiragana through Jōyō kanji support a broad study path.
Pros: Adaptive lessons, contextual AI role play, and pronunciation feedback bring personalization and speaking practice into the same offering.
Cons: Daily practice limits restrict how much learners can do on the free plan.
Cons: English-only availability excludes learners who need instruction in another language.
Cons: Published paid options use different currencies and stated inclusions, so learners should compare terms carefully before subscribing.

Alternatives

For a broader selection, see the AI Language Learning Apps list. Busuu is another freemium option with Android, iOS, and web support and premium learning features. Duolingo may suit learners looking for a free plan and a one-week trial, with Android, iOS, macOS, and web support. Langua is worth comparing for daily chat and Call Mode quotas: its Standard plan allows up to 75 regular chat messages and 30 minutes of Call Mode per day.

Enverson AI offers a free vocabulary-learning version and an Individual plan at 9.99 USD per month for one seat, making it a more specific option for vocabulary practice. Talkpal has a free Basic Plan with a 10-minute daily limit. ELSA Speak offers the first two lessons of topics free and an annual ELSA Premium plan at 159.99 USD. Leximo AI and Cringe are also freemium alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Kotrin if you want a single Japanese-learning app that pairs JLPT-aligned lessons and extensive kana and kanji coverage with adaptive practice and AI conversation. Its strongest reason to choose it is that breadth; its strongest reasons to look elsewhere are English-only instruction and free-plan daily caps. For regular, unrestricted study, compare the paid plans’ inclusions and renewal terms before committing.
