Overview

SWC is a Rust-based toolchain for compiling and transforming JavaScript and TypeScript. It is best suited to developers building JavaScript tools or wiring compilation into an existing workflow. Its speed and broad integrations are compelling; its own bundler is a poor long-term bet for projects preparing for v2.

SWC compiles modern syntax into code intended for major browsers and parses ECMAScript, TypeScript, and Flow. The project names Next.js, Parcel, and Deno among tools that use it, and Vercel, ByteDance, Tencent, Shopify, and Trip.com among its users. That adoption shows its reach, but the documentation positions @swc/core mainly for build-tool authors, not as a turnkey development environment.

SWC claims performance 20x faster than Babel on a single thread and 70x faster on four cores. Those figures make speed a central part of its appeal, though the outcome will depend on the workload and environment.

Key features

Compilation and targets: SWC aims to support ECMAScript features, stage 3 proposals, and preset-env transforms, including bugfix transforms. Browserslist-compatible queries or minimum versions let teams target browsers, iOS, Android, Node, or Electron.
Transform toolkit: Minification, WebAssembly transforms, and a custom plugin API extend SWC beyond basic syntax conversion. This breadth suits teams consolidating transformation work in their build pipeline.
Build integrations: Integrations include webpack, Rspack, and Jest. The @swc/jest package can replace Jest’s default JavaScript-based ts-jest runner with a Rust replacement, while @swc/wasm-web can synchronously transform code in a browser using WebAssembly.
Installation choices: Prebuilt binaries or source builds are available, with packages documented for npm, Yarn, pnpm, Bun, and Deno. That range accommodates different developer setups without requiring a single package manager.
Polyfill caveat: SWC warns that its polyfill usage mode is less efficient than Babel for certain dynamically computed property expressions. Projects relying on those expressions should weigh that limitation before switching.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
SWC	0.00 USD per free	Open-source Rust-based developer toolchain

SWC is free, with no free trial or paid tier described. Its published capabilities include TypeScript support, code splitting, tree shaking, source maps, and a plugin API. There are no stated seat or quota terms to weigh against the free price.

Platforms

SWC is available across Android, API, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. The project documents package-manager installation routes and prebuilt binaries, as well as building from source. The browser-facing WebAssembly module offers a distinct option for synchronous transformations inside a browser.

Who it's for

SWC is a strong fit for build-tool authors and teams seeking a fast compiler to integrate into JavaScript or TypeScript workflows. Existing users of webpack, Rspack, or Jest can draw on its named integrations, and its targeting options suit projects supporting multiple browsers or runtimes. Developers looking for a complete, self-contained application-building experience may find it more specialized than they need.

Teams choosing a bundler should account for the documentation’s roadmap: SWC’s bundling feature will be dropped in v2, and the project recommends SWC-based bundlers instead. That makes the compiler attractive, but the bundled workflow itself a choice to revisit.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad JavaScript, TypeScript, and Flow parsing plus compilation targets gives tooling teams flexibility across syntax and environments.
Pro: Integrations with webpack, Rspack, and Jest make SWC usable within established workflows rather than only as a standalone compiler.
Pro: Free access and multiple installation routes lower the cost and setup barriers for teams evaluating it.
Con: The bundler is slated for removal in v2, so projects should use a recommended SWC-based bundler rather than build around that feature.
Con: Polyfill handling is less efficient than Babel for some dynamically computed property expressions, a meaningful drawback for affected codebases.
Con: The core API is mainly aimed at build-tool authors, which limits its appeal to developers seeking a turnkey tool.

Alternatives

Babel is the clearest alternative for teams that prefer a free compiler without paid tiers or stated usage limits, particularly where SWC’s documented polyfill limitation matters.

Kotlin/JS is a free option when the project is built around Kotlin and the Kotlin Multiplatform Gradle plugin, rather than a JavaScript-focused Rust toolchain.

Cython is a free, Apache 2.0-licensed alternative for readers considering a different open-source compiler tool.

Google Web Toolkit is another free, Apache 2.0-licensed option to compare.

ClojureScript is a free, Eclipse Public License 1.0 alternative for readers considering another open-source software route.

Transcrypt is a free, Apache 2.0-licensed alternative.

TeaVM is another free option.

Fable is a web-based alternative.

Verdict

Choose SWC if you need a free, fast compiler and transformation toolkit to integrate with JavaScript or TypeScript tooling. Its broad targets, integrations, and installation routes make it a capable foundation; look elsewhere if you need a bundler to rely on through v2 or your polyfill workload depends on the expressions SWC handles less efficiently than Babel.
