Overview

Koala combines sound capture and beat-making in one workflow: record with a device microphone or import audio, then shape samples with effects and arrange them into tracks. The core sampler holds up to 64 recorded samples, a useful constraint for focused beat projects but a potential ceiling for makers who rely on larger collections.

The freemium model varies by platform. Samurai and Mixer are separate in-app purchases, while the desktop plugin has its own trial and licence terms.

Key features

A high-resolution sequencer, keyboard mode, quantization and swing give users several ways to play and tighten sample timing. That makes Koala more than a sound pad: it can take a recording from raw material to arranged beat without requiring a separate sequencing tool.

Projects export as WAV loops or tracks, and iOS also supports Ableton Live Set export. MIDI control and Ableton Link support external control and Wi-Fi jamming, which makes Koala more adaptable to connected music setups. Ableton Live Set export, however, is specifically an iOS capability.

The Samurai add-on broadens sound shaping and composition with time-stretch algorithms, a piano roll, auto-chop, three-band EQ, a polyphonic synth and MIDI output. It is the more relevant upgrade for users who want deeper sample editing and melodic tools. Mixer targets channel-based work: it adds four channels, a main bus and five effect slots per channel. Its external plugin hosting is available on iOS, Mac and Windows, but not Android, so Android users should not choose it expecting that capability.

Pricing

Koala is freemium, but the cost depends on where and how it is used. The iOS app costs 4.99 USD per once as a one-time App Store purchase for iPhone and iPad; in-app purchases are sold separately.

Mac, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi desktop versions are free for now. The Windows build is in beta, so it is a less settled choice for anyone who needs a dependable Windows desktop setup. The separate desktop plugin has a 0.00 USD per free billed 7-day trial per computer; after the trial, it stops working until a licence is purchased. The plugin licence is for one person and can be active on up to three computers at once.

Budget for them only if their extra editing, synthesis, mixing or plugin-hosting tools matter to your workflow; the core app already covers recording, sequencing and export. Desktop plugin checkout is processed by Paddle, which collects payment details; the maker says it does not see card numbers.

Platforms

Koala is available on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows, with desktop builds also offered for Raspberry Pi. The broad platform range is a practical advantage for users moving between mobile and computer, but feature parity is not complete: Ableton Live Set export is an iOS feature, Mixer plugin hosting is unavailable on Android, and the Windows desktop build is in beta.

The maker says the iOS and Android apps require no account and do not send projects or audio to it; microphone, file and photo permissions stay on the device. The desktop plugin sends computer information to track active licence computers, while projects and audio stay on the computer according to the maker.

Who it's for

Koala suits beat-makers who want to record or import sounds, sequence them, and export finished loops or tracks without splitting the core workflow across apps. It is especially attractive to mobile users who value MIDI control or, on iOS, Ableton Live Set export. The 64-sample limit and paid add-ons make it less suited to users who need a larger sampler library or expect every advanced editing and mixing feature in the base purchase.

Pros and cons

Pros: Records or imports sounds, then sequences up to 64 samples with quantization and swing, keeping capture and beat construction together.
Pros: WAV export, MIDI control and Ableton Link support useful handoffs and connected setups; iOS adds Ableton Live Set export.
Pros: Desktop builds for Mac, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi are free for now, lowering the barrier to trying desktop use.
Cons: Samurai and Mixer are separate purchases, so the deeper editing and mixing workflow costs extra.
Cons: Mixer plugin hosting is absent on Android, and the Windows desktop build remains in beta.
Cons: The desktop plugin trial lasts seven days per computer and then stops working without a purchased licence.

Alternatives

Choose DAWG if a one-time purchase and its Android, Linux, macOS and Windows platform coverage better fit your setup; its listed price is 5.00 USD per once or more. Loopz is worth considering for iOS or macOS users who want premium access to its full sounds library, priced at 5.99 USD per month or 39.99 USD per year.

Remixlive may suit users drawn to a larger sample-library offer: its monthly Premium plan is 9.99 USD per month and includes 26,000+ samples, all available and future features, and a weekly Sample Pack. Beatmaker 3 is a paid alternative for iOS, macOS or Windows users looking for genre-focused drum instruments, with individual titles at 49.00 USD per once or a 17-instrument bundle at 99.50 USD per once.

Drambo is another paid option for iOS and macOS, with 16 tracks. Patterning 3 suits Apple-device users who want a one-time-purchase option, priced at 29.99 USD per once. Auxy Studio offers a free plan with a selection of demo sounds on iOS and macOS. Drum Pads 24 is a freemium option for iOS and Android.

Verdict

Koala Sampler is a strong choice for beat-makers who want to capture sounds and turn them into sequenced, exportable tracks across mobile and desktop. Its core workflow, MIDI support and flexible exports are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need a larger sample capacity, included advanced tools, or Android plugin hosting.
