Overview

Khan Academy is a nonprofit learning platform for core school and early-college subjects, with separate tools for teachers and young children. It suits students, families, and educators looking for free practice and learning support. Its breadth and free core make it a strong supplement to instruction, but it is not a credentialing program: it offers neither completion certificates nor degrees.

Personalized courses aim to help students master concepts and address learning gaps. Khanmigo adds guided AI tutoring, while the teacher offering combines classroom practice and progress tracking with planning and feedback tools. Those options give Khan Academy reach across independent study and classroom use, though paid Khanmigo subscriptions have strict U.S. eligibility requirements.

Key features

Courses and practice

The catalog includes more than 840 free courses in core academic subjects for K–12 and early-college learners. Personalized learning is designed to focus students on mastery and concepts they need to strengthen, making the platform useful alongside schoolwork or for self-directed study. Learners who need a formal completion credential should choose another option.

Khanmigo and teacher tools

Khanmigo guides students from elementary school through college toward answers across academic subjects. For educators, it supports lesson planning, feedback, summaries of student work, rubrics, and exit tickets. Khan Academy for Teachers adds standards-aligned practice and progress tracking. Teacher tools are free, but availability depends on educator locale; learner and parent subscriptions are paid and U.S.-only.

Mobile and early-childhood learning

The Android and iOS apps support interactive exercises, mastery levels, synced progress, offline video downloads, and a scratchpad. Offline video downloads are useful when a learner cannot rely on a connection, though the offline feature is specifically described for video. Khan Academy Kids is a distinct free, ad-free app for children ages 2–8, with interactive books, games, and creative lessons.

School and district tools

Teachers can import Google Classroom student rosters. District plans include Clever or ClassLink rostering and single sign-on, while the larger Enterprise plan adds administrator reporting, data insights, and implementation support. District plans state that student privacy and data security are SOC-audited and FERPA- and COPPA-compliant, with a VPAT for WCAG 2.1AA. The privacy policy describes reasonable organizational and technical safeguards for personal information.

Pricing

Khan Academy uses a freemium model. The core platform is free for independent learners, teachers, and parents, and includes the free course catalog. Khanmigo teacher tools also cost nothing, subject to educator-location availability.

Khan Academy: 0.00 USD per free. Best for learners, teachers, and parents who need the core learning platform without a subscription.
Khanmigo Teacher Tools: 0.00 USD per free. A fit for educators seeking AI-supported planning and feedback, where the tools are available in their locale.
Khanmigo Parent Subscription: 4.00 USD per month, billed $4 / month. An individual U.S.-only option for parents; the subscriber must be at least 18, live in the United States, and have a U.S. billing address.
Khanmigo Learner Subscription: 4.00 USD per month, billed $4 / month. An individual U.S.-only option for learners, under the same age, residence, and billing-address requirements.
Enterprise Starter: 10.00 USD per year, billed $10/student/year, for U.S. schools and districts with 1,000 or fewer student licenses. This is the lower-cost district tier, with a defined license ceiling.
Enterprise: Custom pricing for more than 1,000 student licenses. It adds administrator reporting and data insights, single sign-on, automated Clever or ClassLink rostering, and live professional learning and implementation support.

The free core is the practical choice for individual study if Khanmigo is not needed. The paid individual subscriptions add Khanmigo but remain limited to eligible U.S. adults. Schools above 1,000 student licenses must move to custom-priced Enterprise.

Platforms

Khan Academy is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The mobile apps add offline video downloads and a scratchpad to interactive exercises and synced progress, making them useful for study away from a desktop.

Who it's for

Khan Academy is a good fit for K–12 and early-college learners who want broad, free academic practice, and for parents seeking a separate early-learning app for children ages 2–8. Teachers can use its standards-aligned practice, progress tracking, and free teacher tools; districts can consider the paid plans for rostering and administrative support. It is a weaker fit for anyone who needs a degree, completion certificate, or Khanmigo access outside the United States.
