Overview

Imgflip Meme Generator is an online editor for making memes and custom graphics from searchable templates, personal uploads, or a blank starting point. It is best suited to people who want a large template pool and substantial control over the finished image. Its broad editing options are appealing, but the free tier’s watermark and link-based image visibility may rule it out for some sharing needs.

Key features

The library of more than 1 million user-uploaded templates gives meme-makers a wide range of formats to search. If none fits, users can upload an image from a device or URL, or begin with a blank template. The editor goes beyond adding captions: it supports images, stickers, drawing, spacing adjustments, filters, cropping, rotation, flipping, and vertically stacked meme chains. That makes Imgflip useful for posters, banners, advertisements, and other custom graphics, though its breadth will matter more to people who want to shape a design than to those seeking only a quick caption.

Font choices include device-installed fonts and more than 1,300 free fonts, giving creators room to match a particular look. Animated templates appear in search, and users can browse GIF templates or create their own with GIF Maker. Imgflip also offers AI creation tools. For Slack users, the app can create and post memes in channels through /imgflip text commands, a focused convenience for teams that share jokes in their work chat.

Privacy deserves attention before sharing. Images are publicly accessible by link unless marked private, and private images cannot be shared by link. API-created images are also publicly accessible by URL, and the caption_image API has no private option. Imgflip uses Bearer tokens for API authentication and says it stores only a hash of each API key, but that does not change the visibility limits on generated images.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes more than 1 million meme templates, but exports carry an Imgflip watermark and the service includes ads. It is the sensible starting point for casual use when branding and advertising are acceptable.

Basic costs 4.95 USD per month, billed yearly (save 17%). It is for memes only and adds AI creation tools, background removal, watermark removal, and disabled ads. The annual billing commitment and meme-only scope make it a poor fit for creators who need GIFs or video segments; it is the lower-cost paid route for people who mainly want cleaner static meme exports.

Pro costs 11.95 USD per month, billed yearly (save 20%). It covers GIFs and memes, removes the watermark and ads, and includes unlimited AI creation and background removal. Its animation limits—1,600 GIF frames and 240-second video segments—plus sound on GIFs make it the relevant plan for more involved animated work. Both paid plans are billed yearly, so the monthly figures should not be mistaken for month-to-month terms.

Platforms

Imgflip is offered on web and Android, as well as through an API and extension. There are no mobile apps, so Android availability should not be read as a dedicated app offering. The Slack integration provides another route for creating and posting memes from channels.

Who it's for

Choose Imgflip if you want a very large searchable template collection, editing controls beyond captions, or a single tool for memes and broader graphics. It also suits creators who need GIFs, sound, AI tools, or background removal and are prepared to pay for the corresponding plan. Look elsewhere if you need a watermark-free free export, private-by-link sharing, or a paid option without yearly billing.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 1 million searchable user-uploaded templates, with upload and blank-canvas options when a template is not right.
Pro: Editing includes stickers, drawing, filters, cropping, rotation, flipping, and meme chains, making it useful beyond standard caption memes.
Pro: Pro supports GIF sound, up to 1,600 frames, and video segments up to 240 seconds for more substantial animated creations.
Con: Free exports include a watermark and ads, so clean output requires a paid plan.
Con: Images are accessible by link unless private, while private images cannot be shared by link; the caption_image API has no private option.
Con: Basic is limited to memes, and both paid plans use yearly billing.

Verdict

Imgflip is a strong choice for meme-makers and graphic creators who want a huge searchable template library, flexible editing, and a path from static memes to GIFs and video segments. Its main trade-offs are clear: free exports are watermarked, paid plans are billed yearly, and image-link privacy needs care. Choose it for breadth and control; look elsewhere if free, watermark-free, private-by-link sharing is essential.
