Overview

IDrive is a cloud backup service that brings computers, phones, servers, and NAS devices into one account. It suits people and organizations with mixed devices who want version history and several ways to recover data. Broad coverage and retention options are its strengths; capacity limits and potential overage fees call for careful plan sizing.

Key features

IDrive supports Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, servers, and NAS devices. Incremental, compressed backups transfer modified portions of files, reducing bandwidth use after the initial backup. That is useful for ongoing protection across multiple devices, though the plan's storage quota still determines how much can be kept.

Users can restore individual files, earlier versions, deleted files, or disk images, and can use IDrive Express. The service retains up to 30 previous versions of each backed-up file; Snapshots add point-in-time recovery. Together with ransomware protection, these options can help restore data from before an incident. True Archiving keeps files in the account until they are manually deleted or Archive Cleanup is run, making it better suited to long-term retention than a service that only mirrors current device contents.

Files are encrypted with 256-bit AES in transit and at rest. Private encryption keys are optional and are not stored on IDrive's servers, a useful choice for users who want control over their encryption key. Add-ons cover Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Dropbox, and Box. The Microsoft Office 365 Backup plan offers unlimited storage per seat, while Cloud Applications Backup also has a seven-day trial.

Team and Business plans support multiple users administered through a web console or administrative account. Business plans have no stated cap on the number of computers backed up to one account. IDrive cites SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certifications and support for requirements including GDPR, PCI, and HIPAA; it offers a Business Associate Agreement for HIPAA. Round-the-clock support is available by live chat, email, and phone.

Pricing

IDrive Basic is free with 10 GB of storage and no credit card requirement. That is a low-commitment way to try backups or a free account with add-ons, but the small quota is restrictive for broader device coverage.

IDrive Mini costs 0.25 USD per month, billed monthly, for 100 GB and one user. It is the least expensive paid option, but the modest storage and single seat suit a small personal backup need rather than a household or team.

IDrive Personal costs 11.99 USD per month, billed monthly, for 5 TB, one user, and multiple computers. It fits an individual protecting several computers with a larger storage allowance. IDrive Team costs the same 11.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 5 TB, five computers, and five users; its fixed device and seat limits make it a better fit for a small group than for an expanding team.

IDrive Business is 59.99 USD per month, billed monthly, for 1.25 TB, unlimited users, and computers, servers, Exchange, SQL, and NAS devices. It suits organizations that need broad device coverage and user administration, but the stated storage allowance is lower than Personal's despite the higher price. Exceeding storage limits may cost 0.25 USD/GB/month on Personal and 0.50 USD/GB/month on Team and Business, so a plan with room to grow can matter more than its starting price.

Microsoft Office 365 Backup costs 20.00 USD per year, billed at $20/Seat/Year, and includes unlimited storage with a seven-day free trial. It is a focused option for Microsoft 365 backups rather than a substitute for a general device-backup plan.

Platforms

IDrive covers Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, and the web, as well as servers and NAS devices. That range makes it a practical fit for mixed environments; users who only need mobile photo storage may not need its wider computer and server coverage.

Who it's for

IDrive is a strong fit for individuals backing up multiple computers, small teams sharing a managed account, and organizations that need computer, server, or NAS backups alongside cloud application coverage. Its version history, archive retention, and restore choices suit users who value recovery options. It is less compelling for anyone with a small backup footprint who would rather avoid capacity planning or possible overage charges.

Pros and cons

Broad device coverage: One account can cover computers, mobile devices, servers, and NAS systems, useful for households and organizations with varied hardware.
Several recovery paths: Up to 30 previous file versions, Snapshots, deleted-file recovery, disk-image restoration, and IDrive Express provide more than a current-file copy.
Long-term retention: True Archiving keeps files until manually removed or Archive Cleanup runs, helpful when data should outlast its original device.
Capacity requires attention: Plan quotas vary, and over-limit charges can add recurring costs, especially on Team and Business.
Paid plans make different trade-offs: Team matches Personal's monthly price but limits the account to five users and five computers; Business expands users and device types while charging more and offering 1.25 TB.

Alternatives

For a photo-first service, Ente Photos has a free 10 GB tier and a 50 GB family plan for 2.49 USD per month; choose it when photo storage and family sharing matter more than IDrive's computer, server, and NAS backup scope. PhotoSync offers free basic transfers, with full-size transfer, RAW, NAS, and cloud features shown as paid; it may suit readers focused on moving photos between devices. Rawback has a free 5 GB tier with monthly AI and face-recognition allowances, a different fit for readers seeking photo-focused discovery features.

Immich is free but requires a self-hosted server, so choose it if running your own server is acceptable. Pho has a free local gallery and an open-source core sync engine; it is an option for readers prioritizing a local gallery. Tonfotos offers a free license with full functionality and limits on the number of people in photos, which may suit users whose photo library fits that restriction. FOREVER offers one-time storage plans, including 10 GB for 179.99 USD; it may appeal to readers who prefer a one-time payment. SyncDrop has premium monthly and yearly plans, but the available plan details do not establish how its limits compare with IDrive's.

Verdict

IDrive is the right choice for people and organizations that want several device types, file history, and durable retention under one backup account. Its broad restore options are the main reason to choose it; storage quotas and overage charges are the reason to look elsewhere or size a plan conservatively.
