Overview

HolyJot pairs personal Bible study and journaling with tools for church administration. It is best suited to believers and churches that want those activities under one roof; its breadth is less compelling if you need a dedicated tool for a single ministry task.

Its strongest case is the breadth of devotional features alongside a free plan that includes church and individual use. The trade-off is that the platform serves several needs at once, so churches focused primarily on volunteer scheduling or worship presentations may be better served by a specialist.

Key features

Journaling and Bible study

Scripture-linked notes, mood tracking, PIN-locked entries, voice journaling, and time-capsule entries give users several ways to make a journal personal. That range may suit people who want reflection tied directly to Bible reading; those who only need a basic notebook may not need the extras.

The Bible reader has six translations, full-text search, text-to-speech, and verse-level journaling. More than 5,000 study plans add daily passages, reflection prompts, and progress tracking, with AI-generated plans for users who want a plan beyond the existing catalog.

FaithAI and community

FaithAI answers Bible questions with Scripture-rooted context, cross-references, and commentary, making it a study aid rather than a replacement for pastoral guidance. Churches can embed a chat widget that draws on their own knowledge base, a useful option for congregations that want a way to answer common questions.

Church administration

Church tools include member profiles and a directory, events and attendance, online giving, a sermon library, and email campaigns. Giving integrates with Stripe for one-time and recurring donations, while Hub live meetings are listed with Zoom. This is a broad set of essentials for a church considering one service for both administration and devotional use, though the facts do not establish that it replaces a dedicated system for every church workflow.

HolyJot also supports shift and recurring schedules, availability tracking, automated reminders, and volunteer messaging. Optional volunteer criminal background checks are pay-as-you-go, a practical addition for churches managing volunteers in the same service.

Privacy and support

HolyJot says data transmissions use TLS/SSL or equivalent, sensitive stored data uses AES-256 or stronger encryption, and access follows least-privilege controls. It says it does not sell personal information and allows account and data deletion through settings or by contacting the company. The service states that it is not a healthcare provider and does not provide medical advice or replace professional treatment.

Priority support is included for individuals, and churches receive priority support and onboarding. The contact page says replies usually arrive within 1–2 business days.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed $0/forever. It is available to individuals and churches, with no subscriptions, tiers, or upsells, and includes unlimited journal entries, FaithAI conversations, and community hubs, plus six Bible translations. For a free service, the lack of a subscription and the stated unlimited usage on those features make it a strong fit for individuals and groups that want to begin without a recurring commitment. No free trial is offered.

Volunteer background checks cost 5.00 USD per once, billed $5 per check, pay-as-you-go. The optional checks are FCRA-compliant and intended for church volunteers, so churches can pay only when a check is needed. The plan details do not describe a paid subscription tier beyond this optional charge.

Platforms

HolyJot supports Android, iOS, and web. It says the service works in a browser on any device and is optimized as a progressive web app that can be added to an iPhone or Android home screen without a download. That browser-based access may suit users who prefer not to install an app.

Who it's for

Individuals who want Scripture-linked journaling, Bible reading, and structured study plans are a natural fit. Churches, small groups, families, and friends may also find value in the community and administrative features, particularly when a free starting point matters. Churches with a narrow operational need should weigh the convenience of the combined platform against choosing a more focused service.

Pros and cons

Pros: A free plan for individuals and churches includes unlimited journal entries, FaithAI conversations, and community hubs, reducing the barrier to trying the core service.
Pros: Six Bible translations, more than 5,000 study plans, and multiple journaling formats give devotional users several ways to study and reflect.
Pros: Church administration covers directories, events, attendance, giving, sermons, email campaigns, and volunteer scheduling capabilities in the same platform.
Cons: Its wide mix of personal and church features may be more than users who only need a journal or one administrative function require.
Cons: The optional background checks are charged per check, so a church that needs many checks will incur a separate cost for each one.

Alternatives

GraceSquad is worth considering for churches focused on volunteer management: its free Starter plan covers up to 100 members and one ministry, with manual scheduling, volunteer profiles, basic member CRM, and email notification. HolyJot is the broader fit when Bible study and journaling matter alongside church tools.

WorshipTools Presenter may suit churches prioritizing worship presentations, with a free plan that includes 500 MB of cloud storage, 10 users, 15 items per service, and unlimited services and songs. HolyJot is the more natural choice for devotional and church-administration features together.

ChurchCMS offers a self-hosted free plan with all six core modules, an Android app, and no usage limits; choose it if self-hosting is central to your decision. HolyJot instead combines church tools with personal faith features.

Planning Center has free plans for Calendar, People, and Services, including one room for Calendar and an unlimited database and reporting for People. It is an alternative for churches looking to use those specific free modules; HolyJot adds the personal Bible and journaling focus.

ChurchDesk Rota is a paid alternative for churches seeking rota software. Simple Church Rota offers a 30-day free trial with full feature access and unlimited volunteers. VolunteerHub is another paid volunteer-management alternative. Ministry Order is another option for churches.

For focused directories, small groups, volunteer management, or background checks, compare the Church Volunteer Management Software, Church Directory Software, Small Group Management Software, and Church Background Check Software lists.

Verdict

HolyJot is a strong choice for individuals and churches that want a free, combined home for Bible study, journaling, community, and core church operations. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; churches that need a narrowly focused volunteer or worship system should compare specialist alternatives before settling on an all-in-one service.
