Overview

LUNA is a full DAW rather than a plug-in bundle, with audio warping, external sidechain support, and hosting for VST3 and AU plug-ins and virtual instruments. It works with any audio interface, so Apollo hardware is optional. Apollo users get a more integrated recording workflow, including real-time tracking with UAD plug-ins, Unison preamp technology, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring.

LUNA Play can detect an instrument, set levels, and suggest presets, helping musicians move from an initial idea toward a recorded take. The broader smart toolkit includes tempo and instrument detection, voice control, stem separation, audio-to-MIDI, lyric transcription, and chord extraction; some features are limited to Studio. Those tools make LUNA appealing to songwriters and producers who want assistance within a DAW, but the Studio boundary matters if a particular smart feature is central to your workflow.

Key features

Studio’s API, Studer, and Ampex console or tape extensions, hardware inserts, and six ARA plug-ins are meaningful additions for producers who need those specific tools. They are less compelling reasons to upgrade if your sessions can be handled with Free’s included plug-ins and Oxide Tape.

Installation and authorization involve a free Universal Audio account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and a free iLok account. A license can be activated at up to three simultaneous locations, and an existing activation can be deauthorized to free a spot. That allowance helps when working across multiple setups, though the extra account and licensing steps are part of getting started.

Pricing

LUNA Free — 0.00 USD per free. Includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape. It is the clearest choice for trying LUNA or building a recording setup without a paid plan. Its trade-off is the absence of Studio’s listed console and tape extensions, hardware inserts, and six ARA plug-ins.
LUNA Studio — 199.00 USD per month. Includes 30 UAD plug-ins and instruments, six ARA plug-ins, console and tape extensions, advanced smart features, and hardware inserts. It suits producers who need those additions in LUNA; the monthly price makes it a substantial step up from Free.
UAD Spark Studio — 149.00 USD per year, billed annually. Includes LUNA Studio and 70 UAD plug-ins, with new plug-ins added regularly. This is the lower-cost paid route for users who want Studio alongside a broader plug-in collection, in exchange for an annual commitment.

The plans list different billing periods and inclusions, so compare the precise package you need before choosing. The pricing model is freemium, with a free plan and paid options.

Platforms

LUNA supports macOS Big Sur 11 through Tahoe 26 and 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, and requires 600 MB of available system storage. Sessions can open on both macOS and Windows, but AU plug-ins will not load when a session containing them is opened on Windows. That makes VST3 the safer choice for plug-ins in sessions that need to move between the two operating systems.

The DAW hosts VST3 and AU plug-ins and virtual instruments. Its broader format support includes AAX, alongside effects spanning preamps, EQ, channel strips, compression, dynamics, ambience, modulation, tape, saturation, vocal processing, and guitar amps.

Who it's for

LUNA is a strong starting point for musicians who want unlimited tracks and included production tools without paying upfront. It is also a natural fit for Apollo owners who value integrated UAD tracking features. Producers who need Studio’s extensions, inserts, or ARA plug-ins should weigh the monthly Studio plan against the annually billed Spark Studio package. Those who regularly move sessions to Windows should avoid relying on AU plug-ins in those projects.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape, giving users room to record and produce without a paid plan.
Pro: Any audio interface works, while Apollo users can add real-time UAD tracking and Unison integration.
Pro: Three simultaneous license locations make it possible to authorize multiple setups, with deauthorization available to free a location.
Con: Setup requires a UA account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and an iLok account, adding steps before a session can begin.
Con: Some smart tools and production features are Studio-only, and the listed Studio plan costs 199.00 USD per month.
Con: AU plug-ins will not load in sessions opened on Windows, complicating cross-platform work that depends on them.

Alternatives

For a broader DAW shortlist, compare Digital Audio Workstations; for dedicated plug-ins, see Audio Plugins or Audio Editing Software.

Airwindows Consolidated is a free, open-source DAW plug-in for Linux, macOS, and Windows; choose it when you want a plug-in rather than a complete workstation.
Buddi is free budgeting software, not a music production alternative.
Guitar Rig offers a free edition as a standalone application and plug-in; consider it when you want that format rather than LUNA’s full DAW workflow.
x42-plugins offers plug-ins across Linux, macOS, and Windows; consider it when a plug-in collection is the goal instead of a DAW.
McDSP Everything Pack provides access to current and future plug-ins with two activations on an annual commitment paid monthly; it suits readers focused on a plug-in bundle rather than a DAW.
Acoustica is an alternative for readers seeking audio software with stereo or multichannel plans.
FabFilter Total Bundle is a 14-plug-in bundle for macOS and Windows; choose it when a focused plug-in collection matters more than a workstation.
iZotope RX offers audio repair tools, including a Repair Assistant in RX 12 Elements; consider it for repair work rather than music production in a DAW.

Verdict

Choose LUNA if you want a free, unlimited-track DAW and value its smart tools, or if Apollo integration fits your recording setup. Look elsewhere if you need a simple cross-platform AU workflow, or if Studio’s monthly price outweighs the value of its specific extensions, inserts, and ARA tools.
