Overview

Skillz connects multiplayer competition to mobile games, with contests for virtual currency or real cash. It is a fit for players seeking tournament-style play and independent developers who want to add competition to their games. Its format range is a strength, but cash play is restricted by age and region, and browser games do not get the full feature set.

Founded in 2012 by Andrew Paradise and Casey Chafkin, Skillz is headquartered in San Francisco. Its focus on game-based competition makes it relevant to readers comparing Game Tournament Software and Game Leaderboard Software.

Key features

Competition formats and matching

Skillz supports head-to-head matches, tournaments, brackets and leaderboards. That range gives developers several structures for competitive play, while players can choose something beyond one-on-one matches. Skillz says its proprietary technology matches participants with similar skill levels and designs competitions to give players a fair opportunity to win. This is a useful part of the platform’s appeal, but it is not a guarantee of any particular result.

Developer integrations and testing

The developer SDK supports Unity, native iOS and Android integrations, including direct integrations with Apple and Google APIs. Unity developers can also use SDK APIs to build browser-playable games hosted on Skillz. SIDEkick lets developers test supported integration workflows in the Unity editor without connecting to Skillz servers, which can help with development work before server access is involved.

Developers should account for the supported requirements: Unity 2021.3 or 2022.3 LTS, iOS 14 or later, and Android API level 24 or later. Integration support is available through a contact form; Skillz advises developers to include their Game ID and SDK and tool versions.

Web limitations and account responsibility

Web play supports brackets and real-time tournaments, but the WebSDK page identifies chat, progressive leagues and some payment methods as unavailable on web. That makes browser delivery less suitable when those features are central to a game. Skillz’s privacy policy places responsibility on users to protect their password and mobile device and recommends contacting support about suspected unauthorized access.

Pricing

Skillz uses a freemium model, with no free trial. The player platform plan is 0.00 USD per free: joining and free tournaments cost nothing, while cash tournaments have entry fees from $0.60. The free entry point suits players who want to try competition without paying upfront, but cash contests are not free and are only available to players aged 18 or older in regions where cash gameplay is enabled.

There is no paid player plan or developer price stated. Developers evaluating the SDK should expect custom pricing rather than a published plan rate.

Platforms

Skillz supports Android, iOS and web. The developer SDK covers Unity, native iOS and Android, with browser games supported through Unity SDK APIs. The web experience has a narrower feature set than the mobile integrations, so developers should weigh those exclusions against the reach of browser play.

Who it's for

Skillz is best suited to players who want to compete in mobile games through organized matches and tournaments, and to independent developers adding social competition to their own games. It is less suitable for players under 18 or outside enabled cash-play regions if cash contests are the goal. Developers whose web game depends on chat, progressive leagues or certain payment methods should also consider another route.

Pros and cons

Pros: Head-to-head play, tournaments, brackets and leaderboards give developers multiple competition formats to build around.
Pros: Skill-based matching is designed to pair players of similar ability, supporting a more balanced competition model.
Pros: Free tournaments let players participate without an entry fee, while cash contests provide another option for eligible adults.
Cons: Cash competition is limited to adults in enabled regions, narrowing its relevance for some players.
Cons: Web lacks chat, progressive leagues and some payment methods, limiting parity with mobile play.
Cons: Developers must meet specific Unity, iOS and Android version requirements.

Alternatives

Z League is another freemium option with Android, iOS and web support; its free plan is free to download, with in-app purchases available.

School Esports may suit readers seeking a league platform: its plan costs 499.00 USD per once for one-time setup, then is free for life, with a 15% share on entry fees and no free-to-enter tournaments.

Challengermode offers a free plan across Android, API, iOS and web, while its developer pricing is flexible and tailored by contact.

Challonge is a web and API option for tournament organizers: its free Standard plan allows unlimited tournaments, events and communities, up to 256 participants per tournament, and charges $0.75 per order for paid registrations.

iSCRIM is a web-based tournament alternative.

Tourney Bot is a web and API option with a free plan capped at three tournaments per month and eight participants.

Xtallet offers a free web plan with one active tournament at a time, up to 100 teams, and a watermark on exports.

LeagueCircuit is a free, open-source option for web use or self-hosting.

Verdict

Choose Skillz if you are an eligible adult seeking mobile game tournaments or an independent developer integrating competition into a game. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of several tournament formats with mobile SDK support; look elsewhere if you need unrestricted cash access or a web experience with the full feature set.
