Overview

nwipe is a free Linux utility for securely erasing block devices, from a terminal or an ncurses interface. It is best suited to technically capable users and administrators who need to wipe whole disks, including several in parallel. Its method range and certificate output make it a capable disk-wiping choice, though runtime requirements and interactive-only hardware sanitization constrain automation.

Key features

Erase choices include zero and one fills, DoD and Gutmann wipes, verification passes, and BMB21-2019. Random-pattern methods can use selectable generators, including cryptographically secure AES-256-CTR and ChaCha20. This flexibility suits workflows with a defined erasure method, but users must choose an approach that matches their process.

For supported drives, the ncurses interface provides ATA and NVMe hardware-native block erase, cryptographic scramble, and pattern overwriting. These options are interactive only; they cannot be batched with automated multi-drive commands such as autonuke. Legacy ATA Secure Erase and its freeze-lock handling are unsupported, so nwipe is a poor fit for workflows that depend on either capability.

The I/O subsystem offers automatic, direct, and cached modes. Automatic mode falls back to cached I/O when direct I/O is unsupported, which helps accommodate devices with differing support. Multiple drives can be processed in parallel; the project illustrates six drives at once. A three-page PDF certificate is also available, with SMART data when smartmontools is installed.

hdparm is required at runtime. smartmontools and dmidecode are optional recommended tools for features such as SMART certificate data and HPA/DCO detection. That distinction matters when preparing a system: nwipe will not run without hdparm, while the optional utilities add supporting functions.

nwipe is a fork of the dwipe command from Darik's Boot and Nuke, created to run its erase engine on Linux distributions with newer hardware support. It is licensed under GNU GPL version 2.0. The project welcomes bug reports, feature requests, and pull requests on GitHub.

Pricing

nwipe is free: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes command-line and ncurses operation under GPL-2.0. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against a feature-limited free plan. The practical costs are operational: Linux is required, and hdparm must be installed at runtime.

Platforms

nwipe requires Linux and can be run as command-line software or through its ncurses interface. The project points users who want bootable media to ShredOS, which bundles nwipe in an image for x86_64 and i686 systems with legacy BIOS and UEFI support. The README also identifies netboot.xyz, DiskDump, Parted Magic, SystemRescue, GParted Live, and Grml as distributions that include it.

Who it's for

nwipe is a strong fit for Linux users responsible for securely clearing whole disks, especially when they need selectable wipe methods, parallel operation, or erasure certificates. Its bootable-media path is useful for jobs where the target system should start from a dedicated image. It is less suitable for unattended workflows that require hardware sanitize, or for users who need legacy ATA Secure Erase and freeze-lock handling.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad set of overwrite and verification methods lets operators choose an approach for their disk-erasure process.
Pros: Parallel wiping and a three-page PDF certificate support multi-drive work and provide a report of the erasure.
Pros: The free, GPL-2.0 plan offers both terminal and ncurses operation without a paid tier.
Cons: hdparm is mandatory at runtime, adding a dependency that must be present before use.
Cons: Hardware sanitize is limited to interactive GUI use and cannot be batched with autonuke.
Cons: Legacy ATA Secure Erase and freeze-lock handling are not supported.

Alternatives

Consider Active@ KillDisk if you need an alternative with Linux, macOS, and Windows support; its Personal Professional plan is 64.95 USD per once for individual users.

DriveWipe is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with stated free use for personal, hobby, and commercial purposes.

For Windows-only file and folder shredding, File Shredder offers a free plan with five algorithms and free-space wiping.

CBL Data Shredder is a Windows alternative with a free plan for low-level hard-drive formatting and customizable sector-wipe methods.

Strix Disk Cleaner is a free Windows and Linux option with offline operation.

Choose ASCOMP Secure Eraser if a Windows-only erasure option suits your needs better; its Professional Edition Private License costs 29.90 USD per once and is limited to two systems.

BCWipe Total WipeOut is a paid alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows with a free trial.

Blancco Drive Eraser is a paid Linux and Windows option with a free trial and plans that include certified erasure.

Browse Data Erasure Software, Disk Wiping Software, or File Shredder Software for more options.

Verdict

Choose nwipe if you need a free Linux tool for whole-disk erasure with method choice, parallel operation, and certificate output. Its main advantage is combining those capabilities with terminal and ncurses access; look elsewhere if your workflow requires unattended hardware sanitization or legacy ATA Secure Erase support.
